Chapter 23: The Extraordinary Troubles of Miss Witch
Back at the hotel, Angelica threw herself onto the bed and rolled around lazily a few times. Then, as if something suddenly came to mind, she sat up straight.
"Oh, right. I told you I was going to teach you magic, didn’t I, Abigail?"
"Will it be hard?" Abigail asked nervously.
"Not too bad. I’m only teaching you the basics—just enough so you can travel safely around the continent." Angelica cleared her throat and began explaining. "Magic is made up of eighty known categories called sequences. Each sequence contains nine types of magic. The lower the number, the more powerful the sequence. You can advance by luck, repeated use, or using potions—but I don’t recommend the potion method. It’s unpredictable. The safest path is still slow and steady progress."
Abigail nodded while jotting things down, a bit overwhelmed. Angelica continued, eventually explaining something even more important.
"Each sequence has a limited number of people who can reach it. Once you’ve mastered at least five Sequence Ones, you gain a chance to become an Eternal—what we call a ‘Beyonder.’ I have five: Corruption (Nigredo), Purification (Albedo), Gold (Citrinitas), Completion (Rubedo), and Life (Viriditas)."
Abigail’s eyes widened. "How did you manage that, Sister Angelica?"
Angelica grinned. "Hmm~ You thinking of becoming a Beyonder yourself? It’s a tough road. I managed to reach one Sequence One through my own skills. The other four? Pure luck."
In the novels Angelica used to read back on Earth, isekai travelers always had some kind of cheat ability. But she hadn’t gotten anything like that—no special power, no golden finger, no system. And yet, here she was, one of the rare people in history who had successfully collected five Sequence Ones and become a Beyonder. The chances of success were so low that barely anyone had ever made it.
"I’m going to start you with Sequence 9 magic," she said. "Don’t underestimate it—it’s incredibly practical. First up is Diligence, the common language spell. It lets you understand most spoken languages across the continent. It won’t help with ancient scripts or animal speech, but for travel? It’s essential."
Angelica was an experienced teacher, and Abigail was a fast learner. Angelica estimated it would take only a few months for Abigail to reach a respectable level. Not court-magician-level, but enough to get by.
That night, Angelica reminded Abigail to wake her up in the morning. After spending some time with her, Abigail had discovered a surprising habit: Angelica loved sleeping in. Without someone to wake her, she'd stay in bed until nearly lunchtime.
The next morning, Abigail gently shook the bundled-up witch.
"Sister Angelica, it’s time to get up."
"Ugh... I can't eat anymore..."
"Please stop talking nonsense. That dream sounds fake."
"I don't want to get up..."
"Please stop talking nonsense. That dream sounds fake."
"Why are you wearing nothing? Do you have this habit?"
"What are you talking about? I..."
Without a quilt to keep her warm, Angelica was forced to get up. However, when she saw that she had nothing left, she was stunned.
"Tsk. Here we go again. Abigail, I don't have the habit of sleeping naked, although I do go without underwear when the weather is hot."
"Then why..."
Abigail covered her eyes shyly, but couldn't help but peek through her fingers. Although they were both girls, Abigail couldn't help but exclaim "Oh!" when the witch took off her thick magic robe. Angelica not only looked thin in her clothes, but also had no flaws in her figure under the magic robe. Abigail finally understood that Angelica's favorite wizard hat and magic robe were actually a seal of her beauty. Otherwise, coupled with Angelica's personality of showing off, it would probably cause countless unnecessary troubles.
"It was stolen by White. No one else would do such a boring thing except White."
"White"?"
"I forgot to tell you yesterday that successful Beyonders will be given titles represented by colors. My full name is "Black" Witch Angelica, and "White" is another Beyonder."
"Do the Beyonders know each other?"
"Extraordinaries attract each other!... I really want to say this line in a cool way, but there is no such setting. When you become an immortal, it is normal to want [N O V E L I G H T] to meet colleagues who have achieved the same level of success. However, I regretted it after I took action. They are basically all weirdos."
Angelica said nonchalantly while taking inventory of her spare clothing.
"Because they have lived too long, most of them are very abnormal and a little bit mentally ill. I said that to achieve immortality, you need five sequences in one pair, right? In fact, depending on the sequence one you have, there are huge differences in the way of immortality. I am truly immortal and will not age or die naturally. White's immortality is to constantly replace her body. Her puppet skills can make the fake look real. She first creates a body that she likes, and then puts the soul that carries her memories into it."
Angelica, fully dressed, deliberately asked Abigail.
"Guess what, Abigail, when White finds out that I do nothing and still remain immortal and ageless, what will be her reaction?"
Abigail swallowed. "Will you be... jealous? Feel hatred?"
"No——"White" fell madly in love with me."
"I can't feel any causal relationship between the before and the after!"
"That's why I said that Beyonders are all a little bit abnormal. In fact, I was very proud at first. I'm so cute, and only those possessed by demons like Lord Honore's family would be indifferent. But White is really annoying. Can you imagine someone teleporting to you and trying to be intimate with you while you're using the toilet?"
Abigail shook her head. She really couldn't imagine it.
"I can't imagine... a beautiful girl like Angelica actually needs to go to the toilet or something... I can't accept it!"
"You were not infected by White, were you?"
Angelica tapped Abigail's head. She just didn't age and still had a normal metabolism. In fact, she herself hoped that she didn't have a period, after all, that period every month was too tiring.
After a simple wash, Angelica returned to the refreshed witch lady that Abigail knew.
"I will go to Lord Honore's house alone. I will get back the treasure that belongs to me tomorrow at the latest!"
