Mobuseka:Leon's Adventure

Chapter 56: Bartforth men(3)

Early morning the next day, when most of the residents of the Bartfort Barony were still peacefully asleep, four figures could be seen at the local shipyard, engaged in a quiet yet lively conversation. Upon closer inspection, it became clear that this was a group of adventurers. They were all dressed in comfortable travel gear, with backpacks full of supplies and swords strapped to their belts. However, a closer look revealed that these weren't just any adventurers—they were men of the Bartfort family.

The group consisted of:

Barkus, the head of the family,

Nyx, his eldest son,

Leon, the middle son,

and Colin, the youngest of the brothers.

They had gathered at dawn to embark on a daring attempt to conquer a dungeon. The mood in the group was mixed.

Colin, despite looking sleep-deprived, could barely contain his excitement. His eyes sparkled with the thrill of adventure.

"Ahhh, I can't wait!" he exclaimed, practically bouncing on the spot. "I'm so excited to see my brothers in action and take part in my first real adventure!"

Standing beside him was Nyx, who, in stark contrast to his younger brother, couldn't stop yawning. His voice was sluggish and sleepy:

"Ughhh... Can we just get moving already? I'm still half-asleep…" He rubbed his eyes and looked around, clearly lamenting the early start.

Leon, the middle son, was perhaps the only one who appeared focused and composed. Having ventured into dungeons before, he treated the upcoming challenge with calm confidence.

"Relax. Everything will come together. Just be patient," he said, glancing at his younger brothers.

Last in the group was Barkus, the family patriarch. His slightly weary expression didn't go unnoticed by Nyx.

"Father, are you all right? You look tired," Nyx asked, looking at him with genuine concern.

Barkus sighed and rubbed his temples.

"It's nothing, really… Just yesterday's incident with your mother. It's a miracle I wasn't caught," he admitted, his tone heavy with recollection.

Barkus' Memory

Earlier that morning, before sunrise, the bedroom shared by Barkus and his wife, Lucy, was shrouded in silence. Carefully, he rose from the bed, trying not to wake his wife. His goal was to prepare everything needed for the dungeon expedition. However, he hadn't taken more than a few steps before Lucy's drowsy voice broke the quiet:

"Dear, where are you going?"

Barkus froze but quickly composed himself, turning to his wife with a strained smile.

"Just some work, love. Need to finish a few papers," he said.

"Oh, lie back down, Barkus," she murmured sleepily, her eyes closing again. "The paperwork can wait. You need your rest."

Guilt gnawed at him for lying, but he stood firm.

"I wish I could, but I really can't," he replied gently.

"Fine, just don't overwork yourself," Lucy muttered before drifting back to sleep.

Barkus exhaled in relief and slipped quietly out of the room.

Back to the Present

Returning to the present, Barkus looked at his sons, his expression filled with a mixture of doubt and slight apprehension. He decided to address a pressing matter:

"One of us has to take responsibility when Lucy finds out about this. Who's volunteering to face her wrath?" His gaze landed firmly on Leon.

"What are you staring at me for?" Leon asked, narrowing his eyes as he returned his father's gaze.

Barkus, unwavering, calmly replied:

"This whole thing was your idea, Leon. So it's only fair that you're the one to take the heat."

Leon's tone rose sharply as he retorted:

"Oh, hell no, old man! You agreed to this yourself! If you didn't want to do it, you could've just stopped me!"

"You little—" Barkus started, but a calm, confident voice suddenly interrupted him.

"Pardon me, but may I join this conversation?"

All heads turned toward the source of the voice. Leon, recognizing the newcomer, broke into a smile and said:

"Oh, so you've finally arrived!"

"My apologies for the delay," the newcomer replied.

Barkus, now recognizing the man, immediately addressed him with respect.

"Mr. Arthur Pereira? You were our witness during the case against Zoli! Once again, I cannot thank you enough for your help. But, if I may ask, what brings you here?"

Barkus inclined his head respectfully, but Arthur waved it off.

"Oh, think nothing of it, Barkus. I was simply doing my duty. People like Zoli must be brought to justice, or the parasites will devour our country."

Barkus nodded in agreement, and Arthur continued:

"As for why I'm here, I'll be your witness once again. But this time, it's for your dungeon expedition. My task is to document your success for the chronicles."

Arthur's words immediately piqued everyone's interest. But he wasn't done yet. His smile grew wider, his voice taking on a livelier tone:

"By the way, I have a suggestion to settle your little argument."

"We're listening," Barkus said, while Leon silently nodded, crossing his arms.

Arthur clapped his hands to draw everyone's attention.

"How about a competition? Whoever slays the most monsters in the dungeon wins."

Father and son exchanged glances before answering in unison:

"Deal!"

Leon was confident in his youthful energy and the skills he'd honed in previous expeditions. Barkus, on the other hand, relied on his years of experience and discipline.

"Excellent," Arthur said with a grin. "I believe this will be a worthy test for both of you."

Without hesitation, Leon turned and headed toward his ship, docked at the shipyard.

"Let's get moving," he called over his shoulder.

Barkus, Arthur, and the rest followed, discussing the details of the upcoming adventure. Ahead lay uncertainty, monsters, and the chance to prove who was truly the best.

As the sun rose, painting the sky in vivid shades of orange and pink, the ship stood ready at anchor, as if waiting for their command. A new journey was about to begin, filled with trials, dangers, and perhaps, unexpected triumphs.
