Chapter 5: Chapter Four: Signs and Surprises
Nova couldn't shake it — the constant nausea in the mornings, the aching chest, the strange fatigue that clung to her even after a full night's rest. She chalked it up to stress, to being Alpha, to not sleeping well. But something felt off.
In truth, she hadn't been sleeping much at all.
Since the betrayal, her nights were restless and haunted. She'd fall asleep for an hour or two, wake up in a cold sweat, then lie awake until dawn. Food didn't appeal to her either. Most days she forced herself to eat just enough to avoid suspicion, but even then, her stomach churned.
It wasn't just the heartbreak from Allison and Scott's betrayal that weighed on her. It was the crushing responsibility of being a True Alpha — of bearing that title with no bloodshed, of becoming something rare and sacred. And more than anything, it was the pressure of living up to her mother's name.
Talia Hale had been a legend. Respected, powerful, wise.
Nova didn't feel like any of those things.
She felt broken. She felt like a fraud.
Her body was falling apart, and she thought it was just the cost of surviving.
It had been nearly six weeks since that night in the woods. Since Hope.
Nova never would have imagined the real truth of what was happening to her, but soon she would have to accept it, that something in her body was different and how that change would effect her life.

The two weeks leading up to the move to the Salvatore School were a blur of planning, decisions, and one very important rescue. Malia Tate, a feral coyote girl who had been trapped in her animal form for years, was found and brought back to her human side — thanks to Nova.
It was Nova who took the lead. Derek helped, guiding them with experience, but it was Nova who made Malia feel safe enough to shift, Nova who coaxed her back from the wild. Malia would be joining them on the journey to Virginia, uncertain but open to the idea of a fresh start.
Shortly after they found her, another secret came to light: Malia was Peter Hale's daughter.
Peter hadn't known. Neither had Derek. But the DNA didn't lie. Malia Tate was a Hale — making her Nova, Cora, and Derek's cousin.
It didn't change much between them — Malia was still gruff, sarcastic, and a little wild — but it gave them all a sense of something they thought they'd lost: family.
With Derek at the wheel, the pack packed up and made the long trek from Beacon Hills to Mystic Falls. It took a week — they stopped to rest, eat, and occasionally just breathe. It was the first time in months they could all just be together without someone trying to kill them.
One of those nights, they stopped at a small motel just outside Memphis. Lydia, Malia, and Nova shared a room.
Nova tried to hide it. The way she gagged brushing her teeth. The way her scent was subtly shifting.
But Lydia noticed.
She always noticed.
That night, after Malia had dozed off with her earbuds in, Lydia sat beside Nova on the second bed.
"You're not okay," Lydia said softly.
Nova stared at the ceiling. "I'm just tired."
"You're pregnant."
Nova flinched. Her throat closed up.
"I... I don't—"
"You are," Lydia said gently, placing a hand on Nova's arm. "I've known for a few days. I just waited for you to realize it first."
Nova broke.
Tears welled in her eyes. Her breathing hitched. She finally whispered, "It was just one night. With a girl named Hope. I never even got her last name. I didn't mean for this to happen. I didn't think—"
"You didn't use protection?" Lydia asked.
Nova nodded miserably. "No. We didn't even think about it. We were just... in the moment. And it felt good and at the time I didn't care. Like something real in a sea of betrayal and it was like I needed Hope, almost like meeting was fate. And now—"
"You're pregnant," Lydia said again, but her voice held no judgment. "And you're not alone."
Malia stirred and blinked blearily at them. "Wait... you're pregnant?"
Nova covered her face.
"Cool," Malia said with a shrug, then went back to sleep.
The next morning, Nova told the pack.
They were shocked, concerned, and fiercely protective. Isaac pulled her into a hug. Aiden and Ethan promised to help in any way. Lydia held her hand. Stiles stammered something about prenatal vitamins and werewolf genes. Derek stood behind her silent, a little upset someone knocked up his little sister, but solid.
She wasn't alone.

The school loomed in front of them — beautiful, gothic, and sprawling.
The Salvatore Boarding School for the Young and Gifted.
They were greeted by Alaric Saltzman and Caroline Forbes-Salvatore. Caroline hugged Nova tightly and introduced her daughters — Josie and Lizzie, fraternal twins with curious eyes and polite smiles.
Derek stayed behind to speak with Alaric and Caroline about logistics. Meanwhile, Josie and Lizzie gave the pack a tour of the grounds — the common areas, classrooms, library, and cafeteria.
"It's weird not having to hide," Isaac admitted.
"It's the whole point," Josie said with a grin.
After the tour, the pack rejoined Caroline, Ric, and Derek to finish enrollment paperwork and receive their room assignments.
Lydia and Malia would room together. Ethan and Aiden would share a room. Isaac and Stiles were assigned together.
"And Nova," Ric said, pausing. "You'll be joining an upper dorm. Your roommate's been at this school for years, since she was seven. I hope you two get along."
Nova nodded. "Okay."
Before she left, Nova pulled Caroline and Ric aside.
"I need to tell you something," she said quietly. "I'm six weeks pregnant."
Caroline blinked. "Oh, wow. Is the father...?"
"There's no father," Nova said. "It was a one-night stand with a girl. She's intersex. I didn't get her last name. It was just one night. She's not in the picture."
Caroline looked concerned. "Are you okay?"
Nova nodded. "I have my pack."
Lizzie and Josie walked her to her dorm. "Your stuff will be brought up later," Josie said.
The room was cozy. The left side was clearly lived in already. Nova took the right side.
She dropped her backpack and stared around, nervous, unsure.
The door behind her opened. Then clicked shut.
Nova turned around to introduce herself.
Her heart stopped.
Hope Mikaelson stood just inside the doorway, just as stunned.
Nova's eyes went wide. "Hope?"
Hope blinked. "Nova?"
A long beat passed.
"Are you fucking kidding me?" Nova muttered.
And that's where everything changed.
