Moonblood: A Hale Reborn

Chapter 8: Chapter Seven: Secrets, Sickness, and Soulbond Truths

🌪️ Signs She Can't Ignore (Nova's POV)

Nova wasn't sleeping well. Wasn't eating much either. But she did her best to pretend everything was fine.

She knew the symptoms. The aching nausea in the morning, the flashes of dizzy spells in the afternoon, the way her emotions flared like a livewire during training—none of it was a surprise. What was surprising was how hard it was to keep up the act, especially around Hope.

Lydia, Stiles, Malia, Ethan, Aiden, Isaac, Derek, Alaric, and Caroline already knew. She had told them on the way to the Salvatore School and when she first arrived. They'd promised to keep her secret—and they had—but that didn't mean they weren't watching her with worried eyes.

It was the rest of the school who couldn't know. Nova had quickly gained a reputation as a powerful new Alpha, someone who didn't back down, didn't bend, and didn't break. She couldn't let anyone see weakness—not now. Not when her very presence shifted the pack dynamics. Not when she carried a legacy and a baby no one was allowed to talk about.

But her body was fighting her. Her instincts, her emotions, her exhaustion… they were winning.

Her senses were sharper. Her moods more volatile. She snapped at people more easily, even Malia, who usually let it slide. She was hungrier than ever, but the food tasted wrong. Her dreams were chaotic—filled with fire, fur, and Hope's eyes.

And she didn't know how much longer she could keep pretending.

📞 Hope Makes a Call (Hope's POV)

Hope sat cross-legged on her bed, a dozen books spread out around her. Most of them were ancient. A few were in languages that made her head ache. But none of them gave her the answers she wanted.

She hadn't stopped thinking about Nova.

Not just about their night together—but about what it meant. About how she felt. The pull in her chest. The way her magic hummed near Nova like it was resonating.

Finally, out of desperation, Hope called Freya.

Her aunt sounded concerned the moment she picked up. "You okay?"

Hope wasted no time. "What do you know about soulbonds?"

Freya was quiet for a long moment. "Enough to tell you they're rare. And not to be taken lightly."

Rebekah joined the call not long after. "Hope, if you've found yourself in one—you need to be careful. You don't choose a soulbond. Nature does."

Hope chewed her lip. "I think I'm bonded to someone. But I don't think she knows."

"Then you need to figure it out fast," Freya warned. "Soulbonds don't go away. They grow. Or they shatter."

Later that night, Hope found a page in one of the oldest tomes in the Salvatore library. Faded ink, nearly illegible:

A bond blessed by Nature herself. Soulmates are not chosen by chance but forged by fate. Rare. Sacred. Dangerous if ignored.

Scrawled in the margin, a warning: You do not interfere with a soulbond.

Her father's voice echoed in her memory as she sent a message to him: Don't let her go. Soulbonds don't break—they break you.

Hope stared at the page, heart thudding.

Nova was hiding something. But maybe Hope was too.

🤢The Collapse

It happened during a late morning training session.

Nova had been going too hard. Sparring, shifting, leading strategy drills—and pretending she wasn't seeing double every time she moved.

She faltered. Just for a second. The room spun.

Then everything went black.

Hope caught her before she hit the ground.

"Nova!"

She lifted her in her arms, fury and panic spiraling through her chest. Nova was burning up, her skin pale and clammy. Hope didn't wait. She ran straight to the nurse's office.

Nova didn't wake.

Minutes later, Malia, Lydia, Stiles, Isaac, Ethan, and Aiden rushed into the infirmary. Alaric and Caroline arrived not long after. Everyone looked on edge.

Hope paced the room, her magic pulsing. "What's wrong with her? Why won't anyone tell me anything?"

Lydia looked at Stiles, silently asking permission.

He gave a small nod, then said it. "She's pregnant."

Hope went still.

The world tilted sideways.

She stared at them. "She's—what?"

Lydia's voice was gentle. "She's pregnant, Hope."

Hope didn't say anything.

She just sank into a chair, hands trembling, as her heart cracked open.

And deep inside, a quiet hope bloomed that maybe… maybe the baby was hers.

Hope slowly rose from her seat, her thoughts spinning faster than her heartbeat. She turned to the nurse, her voice tentative but desperate. "Is Nova… is the baby okay?"

The nurse, who had been quietly checking readings at the side of the room, looked up, her expression softening. "She's stable. Exhausted, overwhelmed, but stable. The baby's heartbeat is strong. She's further along than I expected, which means she's been under more stress than is safe. But for now—they're both okay."

She paused, then added seriously, "But Nova needs to stop training. No heavy lifting, no contact sports, no prolonged standing, and she must avoid excessive heat. If she doesn't ease up, things will get worse."

🧨Confrontation Round Two

The nurse kicked everyone out of the infirmary to let Nova rest.

Hope didn't go far. She waited outside the door for hours.

When Nova was finally released, Hope was ready.

Their dorm room door barely closed behind them before Hope stepped into her path. With a flick of her hand, the lock clicked into place behind them—sealed with magic. Nova's eyes widened, but before she could turn or argue, Hope grabbed her wrist, not roughly, but firm, and pulled her back from the door.

"You're not running from this," Hope said, voice low. "Not this time."

Nova's face hardened. "Get out of my way."

"Why didn't you tell me?" Hope demanded.

Nova froze.

"Don't do this," she whispered, voice cracking. "The baby… it's not yours."

Hope's eyes narrowed. "Nova."

"I mean it," Nova said, trying to turn away. "You can't know for sure. It was one night. You don't know—"

"Yes, I do," Hope snapped, stepping in front of her again. "Don't lie to me. I know."

Nova's lips trembled, the mask of indifference beginning to crack.

"You think I'd believe it's someone else's?" Hope asked, softer now. "You think I wouldn't feel it if that baby wasn't mine?"

Nova scoffed, her voice sharp and shaking. "Well, Hope, considering you didn't even know I was pregnant till now, you must not have been able to feel much."

Hope winced, visibly stung by the words. "That's not fair. I didn't feel anything… not because I didn't care, but because I didn't know what to feel for. I thought the tug in my chest was just the bond drawing me closer, not… not something more. I didn't let myself question it—I was afraid it would make it real. I kept telling myself it was nothing."

Nova let out a shaky breath, her shoulders sagging under the weight of everything she'd tried to carry alone. Her voice came out barely above a whisper, laced with exhaustion and reluctant surrender. "It's yours," she said. "The baby… it's yours."

Hope's breath caught. "Then why didn't you tell me?" she asked, her voice barely louder than Nova's, but full of hurt.

Nova's hands curled into fists. "I didn't know what you'd do! I didn't even think you'd care. I thought you'd walk away like everyone else has!"

Hope took a step closer, her voice low and steady. "You think I'd walk away from my own soulbond?"

Nova's eyes snapped up. "What?"

"We're bonded, Nova," Hope said, her gaze unwavering. "I felt it that night. The bond—it's real. It's why I can't stop thinking about you. Why I feel you in my magic. Why I know that baby is mine."

Nova looked like she'd been hit with a truck. "No. That's not possible."

Hope's voice softened. "It is. And you feel it too. Don't lie to yourself."

Nova's voice cracked. "I can't—Hope, I can't go through this again. I trusted someone once and it broke me. I was barely surviving. And now…"

Hope reached for her, gently brushing away a tear. "But you already do. You already feel it. You feel me."

She shook her head, tears running down her face. "Now I feel everything again. And it's terrifying."

Nova stared at her. Breathing shallow. Torn between running and collapsing.

Hope didn't move.

And for the first time, Nova didn't either.

Then she took a step closer.
