Chapter 8: He Wasn't My Husband
"Why are you looking at me like that?" she snaps. "Who knows if there will be a fire in the manor? Now, we have to find your niece, Ruslan! What if Master Ferrero looks for her? Besides, we need copies of that ownership! I must talk to Master Ferrero soon!"
Ruslan darkened his face. He sneered, "Is that what only matters to you, Lina?"
"Ruslan, don't forget that I'm not the only one who enjoys the gifts given by the Ferrero family."
"But I treated my niece appropriately! Unlike you..." he told Lina.
The woman chuckled at his approach. "Oh, dear… Don't forget that you are my accomplice. You were guilty of what I have done all these years."
"Fine. This meaningless conversation would go nowhere," Ruslan yielded. He realized it would only be a waste of time if he continued arguing with Lina. The woman is stubborn.
"Good, that you know. The best thing you can do now is find your niece as soon as possible! What if this news reaches Master Ferrero? How would I explain it to him?"
Ruslan heaved a helpless sigh. His gaze fixed outside the window, staring regrettably at the remains of the burned manor.
"Don't worry. I have already given out an order. Rebecca had nowhere to go, so she was still in Bern. She must be terrified right now."
Lina smirked. She just knew that Ruslan would not turn his back on her. After all, she knew him very well. Ruslan was used to a comfortable life. He would not choose to be poor but stick to her and the money they got from Aleksandr Ferrero.
"Ruslan, ensure that your niece will be located soon! Otherwise, if my patience for your niece runs out, I might unalive her before you find her."
"Lina! Don't you dare hurt my niece!" Ruslan turned his head and warned the woman.
Lina scoffed. "Then you better discipline her! Don't you think I didn't know you secretly gave her food? You actually pampered your niece. She would not become rebellious if it weren't because of you!"
"And how do you want me to treat her?" Ruslan argued. He asked, "Do you really think you can tame her by locking her in the attic?"
Ruslan had thrown this question at Lina, who ignored it. She got out of the car when Mayor Muroz knocked on the window. Ruslan clenched his knuckles and followed Lina. He worried Lina would spout nonsense in front of the reporters who came to get fresh news about the fire.
Herbert Manor is one of the biggest and grandest manors in Bern. The entire town knew how vast the land Yelena Herbert owned.
That's right. Yelena's name was written in those land titles, including the manor. Hence, Rebecca was bold to burn down those documents. Without her, Lina would taste her own medicine for making someone suffer for years.
Lina must face Aleksandr Ferrero and explain things.
"Madam Herbert, how did the fire start?"
"Madam Herbert, don't you have a daughter? Where is she now?"
Lina was surrounded by reporters who came to interview her. She smiled beautifully in front of the camera, which the reporters found odd. She had just lost a million-dollar house. Why was she still happy?
Well, Lina was just glad she had dropped by the salon this morning and had her hair and makeup done by a professional stylist; she still looked fresh.
Now, when asked questions, she ensures that she feigns sadness, which is visible in her eyes before she answers them.
"I am very sad about what happened. But I must thank the heavens that the fire at home caught none of my family."
Hearing her statement, the reporters admired her positive outlook on life, which matters more than material things.
Seeing the admiration in the reporters' eyes, Lina tugged the corner of her mouth. She went on…
"The police will conduct a thorough investigation. It happened when we went to Mirth City to send off my daughter Yelena. So we have no idea what happens when we are away. Well, my daughter Yelena…" Lina paused and squeezed some crocodile tears.
The reporters share a puzzled look on their faces. One hurried to throw another question.
"What do you mean by that, Madam Herbert? Could you enlighten us?"
"Well, my daughter, Yelena, was heartbroken. Yesterday, she received a divorce request from her husband of five years. Hence, she leaves Bern to heal herself somewhere. But I am glad we weren't home when the manor burned down. I'm sure she will be even more heartbroken seeing her alimony burn down…"

Bellarus Train Station
Rebecca was amused by Lina's performance in front of the cameras. On the train leaving Bellarus, she received a message attached with a link from her trusted agent, who had worked for her while she was staying in Bern.
Rebecca turned off the video after she watched enough. She threw her phone to the side and lay on the bed to get a proper rest.
Her agent was very reliable. He got her a luxurious sleeper cabin even though she didn't mention her preferred seat.
"This is what my life is supposed to be…" Rebecca muttered as she reached for the wine on the bedside table. She poured herself a glass and sipped leisurely.
Not long after she finished two glasses, her phone rang.
"Hello?" she answered lazily, a little tipsy.
"Hey, woman! Felix told me you were leaving Bern and even burnt down your alimony! Haha! That is so cool, I say..!"
"Is that all?" After she listened enough to the man's mumbling, Rebecca spoke coldly.
The man on the other end of the call felt wronged. "Rebecca, you have no fun at all."
"I know. And I know that you called me not to talk about my divorce."
"Haha… Well, you must have seen your ex-husband's post. He had just launched his latest supercar. What are you going to do now?"
Upon hearing that, Rebecca raised an eyebrow. "So what if he is? Besides, he wasn't my husband in the first place. So, I don't have an ex-husband. Neither, I am someone's wife."
