Chapter 7: Chapter 6: The Bus Spirit
Kasumigaoka Utaha picked up her bag and stood up. Before leaving, she walked to the counter and paid for their coffee, then waved her phone at Ryuu before stepping out of the café.
Ryuu simply watched her leave.
Winning Kasumigaoka Utaha's favor in just one day wasn't something he had expected. But based on the way things were going, it was clear he had left a strong impression on her.
After leaving the café, Ryuu made his way toward the nearest bus stop.
His home wasn't too far from this Kadokawa-owned bookstore chain—around a 20-minute walk—but he preferred taking the bus for convenience.
Of course, he could always take a taxi, but the moment he arrived at the bus stop and saw the graceful figure waiting there, he abandoned that idea entirely.
"Looks like I don't need to text you just yet, Senpai."
Hearing his voice from behind, Kasumigaoka Utaha turned her head, looking unsurprised. After all, this was the only bus stop nearby.
"You seem happy," she noted.
"Well, I get to take the same bus as you, Senpai."
At that, Utaha let out a soft chuckle. "You've started being a lot more honest, haven't you, Kouhai?"
"I'm just expressing what any fan would feel when they see their idol. I'm sure you understand, Senpai."
Their conversation was short-lived as the bus pulled up to the stop.
Seeing that it was the right route for her, Kasumigaoka Utaha smiled slightly. "You take this bus too?"
"What a coincidence, huh? This is actually my usual line."
That was the truth—Route 21 did go near Ryuu's residence.
However, to Kasumigaoka Utaha, his words had an entirely different implication. She had taken this route many times before but had never run into him even once.
A girl as sharp as Utaha could easily guess what Ryuu was thinking.
Not that she was boasting, but she had always been confident in her looks and figure. It was only natural for Ryuu to be drawn to her.
But strangely enough, she didn't mind it at all.
After all, she had already developed a good impression of Ryuu—otherwise, she wouldn't have taken the initiative to ask for his contact information.
On top of that, he was an exceptional person himself. With both of those factors combined, it felt… nice to be admired by him.
She even found herself thinking about how this scenario might play out in a novel.
With a soft hiss, the bus doors opened.
Kasumigaoka Utaha was the first to board.
A moment ago, she had been in high spirits, but the instant she stepped inside, she felt a sudden chill run through her.
"Is the AC turned up too high?" she murmured, rubbing her arms slightly.
Shaking off the feeling, she walked toward the back and took a window seat, leaving the spot beside her open—whether intentionally or not.
Ryuu, who had been in a good mood, immediately sensed something was off the moment he stepped onto the bus.
It was sunset outside, yet aside from him and Kasumigaoka Utaha, the entire vehicle was empty.
More than that, his senses as a sorcerer were screaming at him. A dense, heavy wave of cursed energy filled the bus.
Boom!
The moment he stepped inside, the bus doors slammed shut.
With a sharp hiss, the bus accelerated forward.
Kasumigaoka Utaha, unaware of the situation, turned toward him and patted the seat beside her.
"Weren't you being all proactive just now? What's wrong? Waiting for an invitation?"
Hearing that, Ryuu took the opportunity to sit beside her.
At this close distance, he could catch the subtle floral fragrance lingering around her.
Utaha, too, seemed to notice their proximity. The teasing glint in her eyes softened as a faint red hue crept onto her cheeks—a rare sight from someone like her.
However, Ryuu didn't respond as she expected. Instead, his attention was fixated on the front of the bus.
Seeing his unusually tense expression, Utaha smirked.
"What's wrong, Kouhai? Don't tell me you're getting shy now?"
"It's not that," Ryuu replied calmly. "I'm just a little worried."
His unexpected response made Utaha blink in confusion. Before she could ask anything, he continued.
"Senpai, no matter what happens, don't be afraid."
"...?"
Utaha tilted her head, perplexed.
Then—
BOOM!
A deafening crash came from the front of the bus.
Utaha flinched, her breath catching in her throat.
She turned toward the sound, only to see deep dents forming at the front of the vehicle. On the glass windshield, pitch-black handprints smeared across the surface.
Her heart pounded violently.
She quickly glanced outside the window—only to feel her blood run cold.
Just moments ago, they had been driving through a well-lit city. But now, absolute darkness stretched beyond the window.
No streetlights. No buildings. Nothing.
"...This—"
Utaha's voice trembled.
She recalled the horror stories she had read before, telling herself over and over that ghosts didn't exist.
But faced with this impossible scene, how could she stay calm?
For the first time in her life, the thought crossed her mind—
Are ghosts real?!
The moment she entertained the idea, a paralyzing chill spread through her limbs. Her mind went blank.
She was a logical person, but no matter how rational she tried to be, her body had already succumbed to fear.
At that moment, she remembered Ryuu's words from earlier. Without thinking, she curled toward him, clutching onto his sleeve as if he were her only anchor in this nightmare.
"W-What… is going on?"
"We ran into something nasty. But don't worry—we'll be fine."
Underneath his colored contact lenses, three black tomoe swirled within the scarlet glow of his Sharingan.
And soon, the true horror made itself visible.
A grotesque, bloated spirit loomed at the front of the bus. It was nearly the size of the vehicle itself, its vacant black eyes sunken deep into its misshapen skull. Its lips were sewn shut with blood-crusted stitches, and its entire body was covered in writhing, mismatched hands.
Even at a glance, it was clear this was no low-level curse.
A malevolent aura oozed from its form—something that could easily take a person's life.
Still, compared to Ryuu, its energy was weak. It was large, yes, but nothing he couldn't handle.
"Senpai, do you have anything sharp?"
Utaha, still struggling to process everything, barely managed to respond. "I… I have a needle in my compass…?"
Ryuu sighed. "That's a bit small… Never mind."
Without hesitation, he stepped forward. With a burst of strength, he drove his fist into the nearest window—shattering the glass instantly.
Ignoring Utaha's shocked expression, he grabbed a large, jagged shard, holding it like a makeshift dagger.
"This will do." He glanced back at her. "Close your eyes, Senpai. This will be over soon."
Utaha, too stunned to question his ridiculous display of strength, instinctively shut her eyes.
The curse roared, its many hands lunging toward Ryuu.
But under the piercing gaze of the Sharingan, its every movement was laid bare.
Effortlessly, Ryuu dodged each attack, slicing through the grotesque limbs with swift, precise strikes.
The moment its guard opened, he moved.
With a sudden burst of speed, he closed the distance in an instant.
The cursed spirit barely had time to react before Ryuu drove the glass shard straight into its forehead—splitting its head apart as its body crumbled into nothingness.
