Chapter 126: Military Training
The sound rang out like a metallic drum, and his teammates shifted slightly behind him, taking their battle stances.
The system voice began its countdown.
[5…]
[4…]
Leila gripped her staff tighter, whispering a quiet prayer under her breath.
[3…]
Cael's smile sharpened as he bent his knees, ready to move.
[2…]
Kristoff lifted his sword and shield, his gaze locked onto the enemy frontliner.
[1…]
Xel'Shaar's shadows crawled further across the stone ground, slithering towards the enemies like living snakes.
[Begin!]
In an instant, Steel Hydra moved as one.
Their shieldbearer stepped forward, raising his massive shield to block any frontal attacks while the spear user stayed close behind him, ready to stab out at anyone who got near.
The two B-rankers were at the front, while the other three C-rankers moved to cover the sides, trying to flank Adam's team.
Adam didn't move yet.
He simply observed.
As the two teams clashed together, Adam stayed back, his arms crossed as he watched his own team begin the fight.
Cael dashed forward as flames arose on his feet, sword flashing as he aimed for the enemy flanker.
Kristoff moved beside him, his blade raised to block any incoming attacks.
He didn't move far, making sure that Leila was at a distance he could protect.
Xel'Shaar's chains spread across the ground like a black tide, creeping towards the enemy's feet to try and restrain them.
Leila, who was standing slightly behind Adam, glanced at him with worry.
"Adam… why aren't you moving?"
She asked softly, gripping her staff tighter.
Adam didn't take his eyes off the fight ahead.
His gaze was cold and analytical.
"I want to see how you all fare against a team like this."
He said calmly.
"I need to know how you move… how you adapt… how far you can go without me stepping in."
It wasn't a complete lie.
He really was curious about how they'd fare against a fight with a well coordinated team.
However, in truth, he just wanted to stall for some time before the next round happened.
Some time to think of the issue regarding Leila's intuition about something dangerous happening.
'Hm. Should I reassure myself with the fact that my viewer's have donated me some items that I can protect myself with...'
He thought to himself.
Leila bit her lip but didn't argue.
She turned her eyes back to the battlefield, focusing on supporting her teammates with buffs and healing spells.
Meanwhile, Steel Hydra's shieldbearer quickly noticed that Adam was just standing there.
"He's not moving…!"
He shouted to his team, his deep voice muffled under his helmet.
"Ignore him for now! Take down the others first!"
Their spear wielder lunged forward, thrusting at Cael, but Cael twisted his body, narrowly avoiding the attack as he slashed down on the enemy's arm.
Sparks flew as his blade scraped against the man's armor.
Kristoff raised his sword to block an incoming strike from the enemy's dual blade user, gritting his teeth as the force pushed him back slightly.
"Damn… these guys really are coordinated…"
Kristoff muttered under his breath.
Xel'Shaar's chains tried to wrap around the enemy's legs, but one of Steel Hydra's C-rankers noticed it in time and slammed his mace down on the ground, creating a burst of energy that pushed the chain away temporarily.
"Disrupt their barrier user first!"
Cael shouted as he parried another spear thrust.
"If their defenses fail, we can adjust better!"
Steel Hydra's shieldbearer glanced at Adam again.
"He's still not moving… what the hell is he planning…?"
He warily said...
The spear wielder narrowed his eyes.
"Doesn't matter. He's giving us a free chance."
Without hesitation, he spun around and dashed straight towards Leila, who was standing alone behind Adam.
Seeing this, Kristoff's eyes widened.
"Leila!"
Leila immediately raised her staff, her heart pounding, as she launched multiple mana bombs toward the incoming enemy.
Boom!
The explosions echoed through the arena, but as the dust cleared, her eyes widened in horror.
There was an invisible barrier surrounding him. He walked through the blasts without a scratch.
Just as the attacker was about to reach her, a bloody tentacle shot out from the ground, wrapping tightly around his leg.
With a brutal flick, it flung him across the arena, his body crashing against the stone ground.
At the same time, dozens more blood-red tentacles erupted from beneath Adam's feet, wrapping around both enemies and allies.
They coiled around Steel Hydra's members, forcibly pulling them away from each other, breaking their formation completely.
"Wha—!"
Steel Hydra's shieldbearer struggled against the blood tentacle around his torso, eyes wide with shock and rage.
In the middle of the arena, a towering wall of blood rose up, separating the two teams once again.
The air grew silent for a moment.
Adam's cold gaze swept across his team as he spoke, his voice calm but carrying a sharp edge.
"Leila."
She flinched slightly at his tone, her fingers tightening around her staff.
"You rely too much on Kristoff's protection and your danger intuition."
He said, his eyes locked onto hers.
"Don't expect to be guarded at all times. Think actively. Find ways to protect yourself too."
Leila lowered her gaze, biting her lip as she nodded.
"Yes…"
Adam's eyes shifted to Cael next.
"Cael."
Cael froze mid-breath.
"You move too far from the team. In a real battle, that renders you useless to protect anyone but yourself."
Cael clenched his jaw but nodded firmly.
"Got it."
Adam then glanced at Xel'Shaar, who stood silently with his shadows coiling beneath him.
"It's good that you're holding back."
Adam said.
"Don't reveal your true nature unless absolutely necessary."
Xel'Shaar simply nodded, his expression calm and unreadable.
Finally, Adam's gaze fell on Kristoff.
For a brief moment, his cold eyes softened just slightly.
"…Good job."
Kristoff's eyes widened, a flicker of pride flashing through them.
A small smile tugged at his lips as he straightened his back.
"Thank you."
As his words faded, the massive blood wall began to sink back into the ground, leaving only the trembling, disoriented Steel Hydra members staring at them with fear.
Amongst the fading tension, Adam's voice echoed out again, calm and commanding.
"Again."
Hearing Adam say "again", Cael's lips could not help but twitch.
Am I back in military training again...?
