Chapter 44: Chapter 44: March's Theory and Qingque's Challenge
Delicious food always had a way of lifting spirits.
March 7th, who had been feeling dejected about not knowing her origins, quickly recovered after enjoying the hearty meal. Her natural optimism couldn't be dampened for long.
"Where should we go next?" Victor looked at his two companions, genuinely curious about their preferences.
However, he received two completely different answers.
"The Artisanship Commission, obviously!" Stelle declared with enthusiasm.
"Aurum Alley, of course!" March 7th countered with equal conviction.
Both girls paused, staring at each other in surprise before speaking simultaneously.
"Why do you want to go to Aurum Alley?" Stelle asked, tilting her head.
"Why the Artisanship Commission?" March 7th replied at the exact same moment.
For a moment, neither spoke. They simply looked at each other expectantly, waiting for the other to explain first.
This inexplicable synchronization made Victor, who was watching from the sidelines, chuckle with amusement.
"Let March explain her choice first," he said, deciding to break the delicate stalemate before they could get stuck in an endless loop of silence.
March 7th brightened immediately. "Aurum Alley is the bustling commercial heart of Exalting Sanctum! It's lined with shops and stays brilliantly lit all night long. Perfect for sightseeing and taking photos!"
Victor nodded approvingly, then turned his attention to Stelle. "And your reasoning?"
Stelle crossed her arms with the serious expression of someone making a profound declaration. "I've never been to the Artisanship Commission. I want to explore it and see if there are any treasure chests hidden around."
March 7th shot her a look of pure disdain. "Treasure chests? You mean trash cans, right?"
Though her true intentions had been exposed, Stelle showed no embarrassment whatsoever. Instead, she boldly doubled down on her position.
"That's exactly right! In my eyes, trash cans are treasure chests filled with misplaced treasures just waiting to be discovered!"
Both Victor and March 7th found themselves speechless at this shameless admission.
"Fine, fine," March 7th sighed, taking the initiative to compromise. "Let's go to the Artisanship Commission with her first."
After all, there was no arguing with someone who had the mentality of a treasure-hunting child. As the more mature one, March felt obligated to indulge this peculiar hobby.
Now that they'd reached a decision, Victor naturally had no objections.
Not long after, an extremely peculiar scene unfolded throughout the Artisanship Commission.
Three attractive young people could be seen wandering the area in an unusual formation. Every time they encountered a trash receptacle, the group would halt their progress.
One member would frantically rummage through the contents while the other two stood behind her, watching in resigned silence.
"Are all outlanders this... unique?" muttered a passing Cloud Knight, shaking his head in bewilderment.
Surprisingly, after an hour of dedicated trash bin archaeology, Stelle actually discovered something valuable: an alchemy manual that had been discarded by some unknown person!
The text recorded numerous alchemical techniques specific to the Xianzhou. Although the pills described within couldn't compare to even the most basic elixirs from proper cultivation worlds, when Stelle uploaded the manual's contents to the chat group, she still received 5,000 points for her efforts.
This unexpected windfall filled Stelle with joy and vindicated her unusual methods.
"See? I told you there would be treasures here!" Stelle placed her hands on her hips, wearing an expression of supreme smugness.
March 7th covered her face with her hands. "Can we please leave now? I can't take any more of this."
The stares from passersby felt like needle pricks against her skin. She was so mortified that she wanted to dig a hole and disappear into it—preferably one with multiple bedrooms for good measure.
Victor took pity on March's embarrassment. Grasping both girls by the shoulders, he lifted off into the sky, carrying them away from the scene of Stelle's "archaeological triumph."
"Hey! I still had several more trash cans to investigate!" Stelle protested as they ascended.
"Do you understand the concept of quitting while you're ahead?" Victor replied sternly. "You've already found something valuable. Now it's time to stop before you push your luck too far!"
What puzzled him was that despite rummaging through so many refuse containers, Stelle didn't carry even the faintest unpleasant odor. Were the Xianzhou's waste receptacles truly so hygienic, or did Stelle possess some supernatural immunity to such matters?
Afterward, they spent three or four leisurely hours exploring Aurum Alley's shops and attractions.
Just as the group was considering where to have their next meal, they encountered a familiar face along the way.
"Qingque?" March 7th recognized the petite figure approaching them.
Indeed, the adorable girl with light brown twin ponytails, dressed in her distinctive black and green Divination Commission attire, was none other than the notorious slacker Qingque.
"Perfect! You're all here! This makes things so much easier," Qingque exclaimed, her eyes lighting up with relief when she spotted the trio.
"Are you looking for us?" March 7th asked, tilting her head curiously.
Qingque waved her hand dismissively. "Not me personally—Lady Fu Xuan wants to see you. I'm just the messenger running this errand."
"Fu Xuan?" Victor raised an eyebrow.
"Yes, Lady Taibu asked you to come to the Artisanship Commission. She's waiting for you there."
Victor nodded in understanding. "In that case, let's head to the Artisanship Commission."
At this moment, Qingque's gaze suddenly focused on Victor with unmistakable curiosity. "So you're the Victor who had tea that one time and sent the bill to me under my name, right?"
"Yes, that was me," Victor admitted without any hint of shame or denial.
"You're absolutely outrageous!" Qingque crossed her arms, looking genuinely indignant. "It's one thing to stick me with the bill, but then you had to claim I lost to you at Celestial Jade! How could I, Qingque, possibly lose to anyone at Celestial Jade?"
Her professional pride as the Divination Commission's premier tile game enthusiast had clearly been wounded.
March 7th, listening from the side, was completely dumbfounded.
"That's what you're most upset about?" she asked incredulously.
The fact that Qingque cared more about her gaming reputation than receiving an enormous bill out of nowhere was almost beyond comprehension.
What March didn't understand was that hundreds of thousands of credits were genuinely insignificant to someone of Qingque's position. Victor had deliberately chosen her as the target precisely because he knew she could afford it without hardship.
Victor smiled with calculated charm. "How about I play a proper game of Celestial Jade with you next time? Consider it my apology."
"Deal! I'm looking forward to it!" Qingque's competitive spirit ignited immediately. "I want to see if you can actually beat me in a fair match!"
"As long as you can defeat me, I'll cover all your expenses on the Xianzhou from now on!"
"It's a promise!"
After bidding farewell to Qingque, the three made their way to the Artisanship Commission.
To their surprise, not only was Fu Xuan present, but Jing Yuan, Himeko, and several other familiar faces had gathered as well.
The only notable absence was General Feixiao, who had likely returned to the Yaoqing after completing her temporary assignment. After all, she couldn't remain on the Luofu indefinitely.
"Where's Qingque? Why didn't she accompany you?" Fu Xuan's brow furrowed when she noticed only the three visitors had arrived.
Victor shrugged casually. "Who knows? She probably found a Celestial Jade game somewhere."
"That girl is always thinking about slacking off," Fu Xuan muttered darkly. "I'll definitely make her work overtime later!"
At that very moment, Qingque—who was indeed playing Celestial Jade with friends at Exalting Sanctum—suddenly felt a chill run down her spine.
"What's going on?" she wondered aloud, suppressing a shiver. "Why do I suddenly feel like something terrible is about to happen?"
Back at the Artisanship Commission, Jing Yuan stepped forward with a dignified expression.
"Mr. Victor, your assistance helped the Luofu overcome a tremendous crisis. The Xianzhou will forever remember this debt of gratitude."
"I promised you a generous reward earlier. Originally, I intended to present you with a jade tablet of alliance, but considering you might not require such formal recognition, I decided instead to offer you rare metals and various medicinal herbs."
As if on cue, hundreds of storage containers arrived via sky freight, creating an impressive display when opened to reveal their contents.
"I heard that you've been in need of medicinal materials and rare metals for alchemy and equipment refinement. I believe these supplies will prove useful to you."
The sheer quantity and obvious quality of the materials made it clear that the Xianzhou's gratitude was both genuine and substantial.
