Chapter 34: The Dwarves
---
The Kingdom of Dressrosa.
One of the powerful nations located in the New World.
In ancient times, the Donquixote family ruled Dressrosa as its royal family.
As one of the twenty founding monarchs of the World Government, they had joined forces to create the organization.
From that point onward, the Donquixote family ascended to the status of Celestial Dragons, and the Riku family replaced them as the royal rulers of Dressrosa.
From then until now, the Riku family has been the steadfast rulers of this prosperous kingdom.
Dressrosa has always enjoyed a reputation of being untouchable, even by pirates, due to its status as a member nation of the World Government, more so as one of its decision-making nations.
Its tropical charm and unique culture have earned it the nickname: "The Land of Love, Passion, and Fairies."
However, not everything is as idyllic as it seems.
Two hundred years ago, an event changed everything—the disappearance of the dwarves.
In truth, the dwarves hadn't vanished. They retreated to the island of Green Bit, north of Dressrosa, where they lived in peace.
The connection between Dressrosa and Green Bit was severed due to the surrounding waters becoming infested with ferocious fighting fish, effectively cutting the two off from one another.
Since then, the relationship between Dressrosa and the dwarves has gradually faded into a distant memory.
---
On Green Bit, a lush and untamed island resembling a primeval forest, the dwarves built their underground kingdom, the Tontatta Kingdom.
Over centuries, their population grew to tens of thousands.
Like many other non-human races, dwarves were few in number compared to humans. Only the Fishmen, Longarm Tribe, and Longleg Tribe stood out as having significant populations.
Even the mighty giants, hailed as the world's strongest race, were not numerous.
This scarcity underscored a grim reality for many such races.
Suddenly, the tranquil peace of Green Bit was shattered.
"Roar!"
A terrifying, guttural roar echoed through the forest as a well-equipped army of undead—a full force of 10,000 skeleton soldiers—stormed the island.
"What's happening?!"
"What are those things?!"
The dwarves, who had been joyfully tending to their plants, were thrown into a panic.
The invading force included skeleton warriors, archers, knights, and generals. While it lacked higher-tier units like bone dragons or lich kings, the sheer numbers were enough to wreak havoc.
This skeletal army was a purchased unit—a mere 100 Family Coins in value, designed as low-grade cannon fodder. Though inexpensive and weak by certain standards, against the dwarves, they were a formidable threat.
"Roar!"
With savage roars, the skeletons began their assault, unleashing a wave of slaughter upon the unsuspecting dwarves.
In the chaos, King Gancho of the Tontatta Kingdom stepped forward, his youthful face filled with disbelief.
"What is this?"he muttered, trembling. "Is this the wrath of death itself? Have we done something to anger the gods?"
But even as fear gripped him, Gancho clenched his fists and shouted with determination:
"No! These are not gods! They are enemies! Rally yourselves! Protect our families and fight back!"
At his command, the dwarves mustered their courage, organizing into a defensive force. Despite their diminutive size, dwarves possessed exceptional speed and strength, far exceeding those of ordinary humans.
Their counterattack began, and the skeletal soldiers, though initially imposing, began to crumble under the relentless strikes of the dwarves.
Crack! Crack!
Fists smashed into bones, shattering skeleton warriors and even the knights. Only the skeleton generals offered any real resistance.
In a matter of minutes, the first wave of the skeletal army had been defeated.
"Victory!"
"We've won!"
The dwarves cheered, their voices echoing through the forest.
But was it truly over?
Skeletons, by their very nature, are not known for their strength but for their persistence—their ability to rise again and again.
Crack! Crack!
The broken bones began to reassemble, and the fallen soldiers stood once more, their hollow eyes gleaming with eerie light.
"Roar!"
With terrifying cries, the skeletons renewed their assault. A bone sword slashed through an unprepared dwarf, spilling blood. The small warrior fell lifeless to the ground.
Gancho's eyes widened in shock. "They're immortal… They can't be killed… How is this possible?"
He gritted his teeth and shouted desperately: "Send word to the Riku family! The Riku family has always been our ally—they will help us! Go now!"
The dwarves had no choice but to seek aid.
But was Dressrosa truly unaware of the chaos unfolding on Green Bit? Did King Riku not know of the skeleton army's invasion?
Perhaps...
Things were far more complicated than they appeared.
