Chapter 423: [421] Goddess
August and Kanon found themselves locked in a silent stare, their wide eyes meeting and holding for what felt like an eternity. Neither spoke, the air thick with unspoken thoughts.
"Kanon, what are you doing? Forget about that guy and focus," came Natsuki's sharp voice from the other room, breaking the spell and jolting them both to their senses.
Blushing furiously, Kanon dashed out, embarrassed that she'd been caught staring at August like that. For a young woman, such a moment felt utterly mortifying. August, on the other hand, shook himself free from his musings, his mind spinning with an outlandish thought: If Kanon became a celestial goddess and ended up with me, a prince of the demon race, wouldn't that make us like Meliodas and Elizabeth from Seven Deadly Sins?
When Kanon fled to the living room, her flushed face didn't escape Natsuki's keen eyes. Her immediate reaction was suspicion. She was certain August must have done something. Although she didn't object to Kanon spending time with him, the girl was still young—couldn't they wait a few more years?
Just as she was about to interrogate him, August stepped out of the room, holding a glowing artifact in each hand: the Sword Birth and a luminous crystalline orb.
Natsuki's gaze immediately locked onto the crystal. As a witch, she could sense its immense and sacred power. Such divine energy seemed antithetical to August, who was, by his own admission, the embodiment of the Four Deadly Sins. Why would he have something so pure?
"Natsuki, where's Kanon?" August asked, his voice casual.
"She's in her room. What are you holding?" Natsuki asked, her tone wary.
"This?" August held up the crystal. "It's a gift for Kanon. I was going to wait, but I think now's a good time. Things might get complicated soon."
Natsuki nodded. "That's true." August had clashed with Kojou, the Fourth Primogenitor, and had even faced the Lion King Organization's head priestess. His reputation would inevitably make him a magnet for trouble. To those in power, an unpredictable force like him was a ticking time bomb.
August turned toward the hallway. "Kanon, come here! I have something for you."
"August-niisan…" came Kanon's hesitant voice as she peeked out from the doorway, her cheeks still pink. Shyly, she stepped into the room, her head bowed.
"Come here. Take this crystal," August said, holding it out to her.
Kanon obediently approached and took the crystal into her hands. Warmth spread through her fingers, and she couldn't explain why, but the artifact felt familiar—comforting, even.
Natsuki, curious and concerned, leaned closer, her sharp eyes fixed on the scene. August gently took Kanon's hand and pricked her finger. She flinched slightly at the sting but didn't pull away. She trusted him.
The moment her blood touched the crystal, it began to glow brilliantly. A wave of sacred light filled the room as the crystal dissolved into pure energy, flowing directly into Kanon's body.
"What did you do to her?!" Natsuki demanded, her tone sharp.
"Relax," August replied, his expression calm. "I'm helping her evolve."
"Evolve? Into what?" she asked suspiciously.
"You'll see," he said cryptically, gesturing for her to watch.
The sacred energy swirled around Kanon, enveloping her in a cocoon of radiance. Her form began to change subtly—her mortal body transforming into something otherworldly. After several tense minutes, the light dissipated, and Kanon reappeared. She now had four pristine white wings: the top pair wide and majestic, the bottom pair smaller and delicate, nearly blending into her form.
"What… is this?" Natsuki whispered in shock. "Kanon—she's an angel?"
Even in a world filled with demons and vampires, angels remained the stuff of legend. As a witch, Natsuki had always believed in their existence, but she'd never dreamed she'd see one with her own eyes.
"Kanon, how do you feel?" August asked, his voice soft.
"August," Kanon said, her voice filled with wonder. "I met someone. She was beautiful—so beautiful—and she spoke to me. She told me many things."
"Someone? What did she look like?" August asked, frowning.
"She had long pink hair and… and she was very pretty," Kanon said, glancing down shyly. "She also… um… had these really… big…" She gestured vaguely toward her chest.
Natsuki's eyebrows twitched at the description, her thoughts immediately taking a less-than-pure turn.
August, however, was deep in thought. He couldn't help but recall a certain goddess from Seven Deadly Sins—Nerobasta. Known for her beauty and a few… prominent attributes, she wasn't exactly a figure of renown. In fact, her role in the series was largely that of a glorified background character, most memorable for her rather anticlimactic demise.
So the crystal's origin was hers? August mused, feeling a mix of disbelief and irony.
Suddenly, Kanon held out her hands, and a sphere of radiant energy formed between them. It was a force of pure light—the antithesis of August's dark magic.
"August-niisan, look! This is my power!" Kanon exclaimed, her face glowing with excitement.
"You did great, Kanon," August said, his expression softening. He reached out to ruffle her hair affectionately, his gaze filled with warmth.
