Chapter 437: [435] Familiar
Within an hour, Beatrice arrived.
As August's sole subordinate, Beatrice owed him everything, including her current life of luxury, courtesy of the gold bars he had generously provided her. Even if he summoned her in the dead of night and made her cross half the city, she wouldn't hesitate to come running.
Natsuki Minamiya, suspicious of whatever antics August might be up to at such an hour, decided to stay up as well. Being merely a magical construct of her true self, she didn't need rest anyway.
"Master," Beatrice greeted respectfully upon arrival. However, her composure faltered when she saw August and Natsuki living under the same roof.
"I called you here for one reason," August said, cutting to the chase.
"Please, speak," Beatrice replied.
"I want to know how to summon a familiar and how to forge a pact with one."
Beatrice froze, momentarily wondering if she'd misheard him. "Summon a familiar? Form a pact?"
But when she met August's serious gaze, she realized he wasn't joking.
"Master, summoning a familiar isn't difficult, but… are you certain you want to form a pact with one? Familiars are ferocious beasts that constantly drain their master's life force. Since you aren't a vampire, I'm afraid—"
"It doesn't matter. Just tell me how."
Beatrice hesitated before nodding. "Very well. The method is straightforward: you must connect to an alternate dimensional space and find a familiar there. As for forming a pact, it requires a blood offering to forge a blood contract, sealing the bond."
"Good. How do I connect to this dimensional space?"
Beatrice explained the process in detail, withholding nothing. This wasn't exactly secret knowledge, after all.
After a few minutes of careful explanation, August processed everything. He now understood that summoning a familiar was akin to fishing—using his magical energy as bait to attract a suitable familiar.
Once a familiar appeared, the blood contract would bind the two together. In this bond, the master would supply magic and life force, while the familiar would provide power and loyalty. This was the essence of the relationship between vampires and their familiars.
Familiars, however, weren't physical creatures in the traditional sense. They were manifestations of negative energy, curses, and raw power from alternate dimensions. Their form and appearance depended entirely on the summoner's essence.
For example, Beatrice, as a Type-T vampire, had familiars that manifested as weapon-like constructs. The descendants of the First Primogenitor, Type-D vampires, were capable of transforming into mist. Meanwhile, the bloodline abilities of Type-G vampires, descendants of the Second Primogenitor, remained largely a mystery.
With this newfound knowledge, August closed his eyes and released his magical energy into the void. His goal: to establish a connection with the chaotic, otherworldly dimension where familiars resided.
Moments later, his consciousness breached a realm of pure chaos. In this space, countless streams of negative energy, curses, and erratic magical forces swirled together in an incomprehensible cacophony. It was a place so chaotic and hostile that only familiars could survive here.
Then, with a sharp mental command, August activated the Gate of Sins within this dimension.
BOOM!
The gate opened like a black hole, consuming everything in its vicinity. Its insatiable hunger devoured light, darkness, and even the chaos itself. The emblem of Gluttony, one of August's Commandments, gleamed brightly on the gate as it swallowed indiscriminately, feeding on everything in its path.
As August remained motionless, focused on the summoning, both Natsuki and Beatrice watched him with bated breath.
"What kind of familiar will he summon?" Beatrice whispered, unable to contain her curiosity.
"It's hard to say," Natsuki replied, her arms crossed.
Most vampires, or any species capable of summoning familiars, only had the opportunity to bond with one in their lifetime. Only the elders of ancient vampire clans or exceptionally powerful vampires could command multiple familiars.
Of course, the Primogenitors were in a league of their own. These ageless monsters wielded unimaginable power, with familiars numbering in the dozens.
The First Primogenitor, in particular, was infamous for commanding a staggering seventy-two familiars—an absurd, almost incomprehensible feat.
BOOM!
Suddenly, an overwhelming surge of energy radiated from the gate, jolting August from his trance. His sharp gaze zeroed in on the source of the disturbance.
"A powerful familiar."
August's first thought was clear: he had summoned something extraordinary.
In his perception, a chaotic yet strangely organized energy coalesced in his direction. Instinctively, August reached out and established a connection with it. The sensation was peculiar—wild and untamed, yet brimming with potential. While undeniably chaotic, he couldn't help but feel that this familiar suited him perfectly.
BOOM!
Suddenly, an immense wave of magical power erupted from August's body, flooding the room with an almost suffocating aura.
Without hesitation, Natsuki Minamiya extended a barrier around the house, shielding it from detection. If local magical sensors picked up on the disturbance, it would set off alarms across the city, drawing unwanted attention. And at this late hour, that kind of chaos was the last thing anyone needed.
Moments later, the torrent of magic subsided, and August's energy returned to a calm, stable state. Breathing a sigh of relief, Natsuki allowed her barrier to dissolve. Yet August remained motionless, his eyes still closed.
"Hey, he isn't in trouble, is he?" she muttered, glancing at Beatrice.
"Of course not," a voice answered—August's.
His sudden reply startled Natsuki, and she nearly jumped out of her chair.
"You idiot!" she snapped. "Don't scare people like that in the middle of the night!"
August chuckled, stretching leisurely. "Come on, Natsuki. You can't tell me the great Witch of the Void is afraid of a little surprise."
"Shut up," she growled, folding her arms. "So? Did you actually summon a familiar?"
"I did," August replied with a smirk. "And I'd say I got lucky—this one's quite powerful."
"How powerful?"
"You'll see soon enough," he teased.
"Tch. Like I care," Natsuki muttered before turning sharply on her heels and heading back to her room. "Don't make too much noise, you lunatic."
With that, she disappeared, leaving August and Beatrice alone in the living room.
Beatrice looked at him with wide eyes. "Master, you really did it?"
"Of course," August replied nonchalantly.
"That familiar… It must be incredibly strong, right?"
"Obviously," he said with a grin.
Satisfied, Beatrice nodded. "Then I suppose my work here is done for the night."
"Not quite," August said, tossing something her way.
Beatrice caught it instinctively. In her hands was a small, dark orb etched with strange, glowing runes.
"Master, what is this?"
"That's the Commandment of Wrath," August explained. "Fuse with it, and you'll gain a fraction of my power along with the curse of wrath—one of the Seven Deadly Sins."
Beatrice's face lit up, her usual calm composure replaced with an almost childlike excitement. "Really? I can use this?"
"Of course. On this island, I need someone who can act as my representative. You're perfect for the role."
Without hesitation, Beatrice began to integrate the Commandment of Wrath into herself. For someone like her, who valued power as much as wealth, this was an opportunity too good to pass up. After all, in a world where strength dictated everything, having more power was the ultimate currency.
