Chapter 114: [114] Spirit Origin Reawakened, Authority Evolved!
That was an indisputable divine speed, piercing the heavens like lightning.
Among the known powerful figures in this world, apart from Roy, there was only one other who possessed such divine speed—England's Campione, the Black Prince Alexander Gascoigne!
Black Lightning was the name of this Godspeed, a divine authority Alexander Gascoigne had usurped from the first god he had slain, the fallen angel Remiel. When activated, lightning would swirl around his body, starkly different from the radiant flames that enveloped Roy when he invoked the Godspeed usurped from Michael.
Now, Alexander Gascoigne was reaching for the Holy Grail in Roy's hand at a speed surpassing lightning. Once he obtained it, even Roy, who also possessed Godspeed, would be too late to catch up.
How fast is the speed of lightning when seizing something? It was almost faster than the blink of an eye, exceeding the limits of human thought.
Closer, closer—Alexander Gascoigne gazed at the Holy Grail now within his grasp, an unconscious smile of joy spreading across his face.
His wish was about to be fulfilled!
Gascoigne had heard stories of the Holy Grail from his father since he was very young.
His father was a magician—a weak one—but also an adventurer, fervently searching for the legendary Holy Grail said to contain the blood of a god.
Growing up in such a household, Gascoigne was instilled with countless tales of the Holy Grail from an early age, filling his young heart with longing and yearning for it.
His father passed away, dying on his quest for the Holy Grail. But Gascoigne had no time to grieve. Instead, he inherited his father's legacy, continuing the search as a weak magician and explorer, following in his father's footsteps.
It was during this journey to find the Holy Grail that he, by sheer luck, slew a Heretic God and became a Campione.
He was overjoyed at becoming a Campione, believing this identity would surely help him find the legendary Holy Grail, fulfilling both his own aspirations and his father's wishes.
Gascoigne succeeded. After meticulous investigation, he discovered the Divine Ancestor Guinevere and learned of the Last King. He also found out that the Holy Grail was in Guinevere's hands and that, in his pursuit of it three years prior, he had nearly caused a massive upheaval in England—one that almost claimed the life of Alice.
However, Gascoigne had underestimated Guinevere. Though she was now a Divine Ancestor, stripped of her goddess's power, she was protected by a Knight of the Lake. Moreover, Gascoigne hadn't known that the Holy Grail was originally part of Guinevere's body, leading to his failure three years ago.
But now, he had another chance—because the new king he feared, the king who wielded wisdom, had torn the Holy Grail from Guinevere's grasp!
Gascoigne knew he couldn't seize the Holy Grail while it was still one with Guinevere, but he was confident he could take the one now in Roy's hands.
Just as the Black Prince's fingers were about to touch the Holy Grail, he was stunned to see Roy flip his left hand—and the golden Holy Grail, as tall as a child, vanished from his grip.
'Concealment magic? Spatial magic?'
As a magician, Gascoigne had this thought flash through his mind. But regardless of what this magic was, the Black Prince only knew one thing—Roy had anticipated his arrival. Otherwise, there was no way Roy could have completed the magecraft in such a short time after obtaining the Holy Grail while also activating it faster than his own Black Lightning.
This was similar to the principle of dodging bullets. No matter how fast an ordinary human was, they couldn't truly evade a bullet. However, it wasn't impossible for a person to dodge one—they just had to be faster than the shooter. By predicting and reacting before the trigger was pulled, it created the illusion that their evasion speed surpassed the bullet's.
And that was exactly what Roy had done. The speed at which he activated his magic couldn't possibly exceed Godspeed. But if he had initiated it before the Black Prince's Godspeed took effect, the outcome would be entirely different.
"Thou art guilty!"
Gascoigne, still in shock, heard this declaration in his ears. From the corner of his eye, he saw a blood-red cruciform longsword descending, cleaving through the lightning of his Godspeed authority.
The Black Prince's Godspeed was severed for an instant. Though Gascoigne soon realized he could reactivate it, this sudden interruption disrupted the continuity of his speed, forcing his body to materialize before Roy.
"How?! This authority of yours was supposed to be usable only once per day!"
The Black Prince exclaimed in disbelief, his face a mask of astonishment.
Among the Campiones, he was one of the rare tactical geniuses. After the Tokyo incident and Roy's defeat of Marquis Voban, Gascoigne had taken a keen interest in him. Through extensive investigation and deduction, he had roughly discerned some limitations of Roy's authorities.
For instance, this authority called Sword of Judgment—though its exact function eluded him, he could guess it could sever anything. Previously, this sword had even severed the conceptual-level connection between Guinevere and the Holy Grail, confirming the Black Prince's suspicions.
While a sword capable of cutting through anything was terrifying, Gascoigne's investigations had also led him to conclude that this ability could only be used once per day. This aligned with the balance of Roy having slain only Michael yet acquiring multiple abilities.
Though Roy's authorities were versatile, they came with temporal and usage restrictions. But now, this single strike from Roy had thoroughly shaken the Black Prince, even making him question whether his deductions were wrong.
Watching the Black Prince revert from Godspeed to his human form, Roy merely smiled, feeling no obligation to answer his enemy's questions.
In truth, after fusing with Solomon's Spirit Origin and evolving his Hand of Jacob, Roy had set his sights on the remaining Metatron Spirit Origin. With Aiwass's efforts, this Holy Guardian Angel had finally perfected Pandora's Circle of Usurpation and, not long ago, imparted this knowledge to Roy, allowing him to perform the ritual himself and undergo another Spirit Origin fusion.
This fusion was remarkably successful, directly enabling Roy to achieve Spirit Origin Ascension, further strengthening his nearly unenhanceable Campione body. The most significant manifestation was his total magical energy, which had nearly doubled compared to an ordinary Campione's!
'However, there is a limit to this fusion.'
Roy pondered the current Spirit Origin fusion. It wasn't simply a matter of more fused Spirit Origins equating to greater magical power. Like drug resistance, as Roy fused more Spirit Origins, the potential for growth had its limits. By Roy's estimation, the maximum he could achieve was roughly five times the magical power of an average Campione. Beyond this point, no matter how many Heretic God Spirit Origins he fused, his magical power wouldn't increase any further.
This was the limit inherent in being a Campione!
'Therefore, I must be more selective with future Spirit Origin fusions rather than carelessly merging them, as Spirit Origin Reinforcement has its usage limits.'
Roy thought to himself.
This time's spiritual foundation fusion was similar to the previous fusion with Solomon. Metatron and Michael shared many similarities. The last fusion with Solomon's spiritual foundation allowed Roy's Hand of Jacob to evolve, while this fusion enabled his Sword of Judgment to complete its evolution.
It was akin to obtaining a new Authority. Roy's Sword of Judgment no longer had usage restrictions—as long as he still possessed magical power, it could be used indefinitely.
By altering the order of precedence, this sword gained the ability to sever anything, even conceptual entities. However, it wasn't without weaknesses. Roy could only change the precedence of one thing at a time, and even concepts had their limits.
Currently, Roy couldn't perform feats like "placing the sword above the world" to cleave the world apart with a single strike, but it might become possible as he grew stronger in the future.
