Chapter 46: [46] The Marquis's 'Heroic Rescue'
The History Compilation Committee was Japan's largest organization, jointly established by the state and numerous prominent families from the mystical world to oversee the order of the entire Japanese magical community. The Tokyo branch in the Kanto region and the Kyoto branch in Kansai were the most powerful departments within the committee.
In the office of the Tokyo branch, a woman who appeared to be only seventeen or eighteen years old, with short hair resembling a beautiful young boy, sat at the head of the room. Below her were the leaders of all major departments within the Tokyo branch.
The woman's name was Sayanomiya Kaoru, the heir of the prominent Sayanomiya family in Japan's mystical world. Despite being a first-year high school student, she had recently been promoted to director of the Tokyo branch of the History Compilation Committee and was now convening an emergency meeting.
"Director Sayanomiya, we've just received intelligence that the new King from the Vatican in Italy, Lord Roy Crowley, has arrived at Haneda Airport with his two knights and Princess Alice of Europe. They are currently en route to the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Tokyo by car."
Amakasu Touma, a man in his late thirties approaching forty, was delivering the report. As one of Sayanomiya Kaoru's most capable subordinates, he served as the Tokyo branch's external liaison.
"Mr. Amakasu, did the History Compilation Committee not send anyone to welcome the arrival of the King?"
"The new King came to Japan without notifying the authorities, and we dared not overstep by welcoming him. It would be a huge problem if the King thought we were constantly monitoring him."
The laid-back man answered in a frivolous tone.
"Hmm, you handled that well. Since the King's knight did not proactively inform us, it means the King does not wish to be disturbed... I also have another piece of information. The oldest Demon King, Marquis, arrived in Japan not long ago."
Sayanomiya Kaoru took a deep breath, her tone gradually turning serious.
"W-what?! Why would two Kings suddenly grace our tiny land with their presence?!"
The usually carefree Amakasu Touma's expression changed drastically, and the meeting room erupted into chaos. People began discussing frantically, their faces filled with terror. Japan had no Campione of its own, and the arrival of two Campiones was undoubtedly a disaster akin to an earthquake—especially since these two Campiones had rather infamous reputations.
"The Greenwich Assembly sent word that the new King abducted Princess Alice from the residence of Duke Goddodin in London. Shortly after, the new King came to Japan, and the Marquis followed. From this information, I believe you already know what the two Kings are here for, Mr. Amakasu."
Sayanomiya Kaoru trembled slightly, gritting her teeth as she spoke.
"It's for Mariya Yuri!"
Amakasu Touma held a high position in the History Compilation Committee and was well-informed about the incident two years ago in Europe when Marquis Voban summoned a Heretic God. By piecing together the information about the new King and the Marquis, he immediately deduced the purpose of the two Campiones.
"Exactly, it's about Yuri Mariya. Our new King wants to emulate the Marquis and conduct a Heretic God summoning ritual as well. However, the Marquis has always regarded Yuri Mariya as his most important possession. There's no way he would hand her over to the new King. We can't just sit back and wait—this is likely the biggest crisis I've faced since becoming the head of the Tokyo branch office."
"...Mikihiko, find Yuri Mariya immediately and take her out of Japan. It doesn't matter where—even if you have to abandon her in the wilderness!"
Sayanomiya Kaoru suddenly issued an extremely cold-hearted order.
Kuhoutsuka Mikihiko was startled, then quickly understood. "...You mean to use Yuri Mariya as bait to divert the attention of the two Kings?"
"Correct. Our duty as the History Compilation Committee is to ensure the safety of Japan's land and its people. Against two Kings, we have no power to protect Yuri Mariya. The only thing we can do now is hope that the two Kings don't clash on Japanese soil—especially not in Tokyo! Compared to the nation's safety, the life of one miko is insignificant, no matter how talented she is or how much she attracts the covetousness of two Kings."
"...Mikihiko, don't hesitate. Carry out the mission now!"
Sayanomiya Kaoru's command was resolute, and the other members of the Tokyo branch office remained silent. Sacrificing one hime-miko for Japan's safety—in their eyes, it was the right decision.
"Understood, Chief!"
Kuhoutsuka Mikihiko swiftly took action after accepting the order.
...
In the presidential suite atop the Ritz-Carlton in Tokyo, the daily accommodation fee exceeded millions of yen. But for a Campione like Roy, money was truly meaningless—just numbers scribbled on paper.
"Where are your two knights?"
Alice, seated at the table, was enthusiastically savoring the array of delicacies before her, a blissful smile on her face.
For years, due to her frail health, she had been bedridden, unable to enjoy the pleasures of food. Now that she could finally move freely and her digestive functions had improved, she was indulging to her heart's content.
"I've already sent Erica and Liliana to capture Yuri Mariya. I have zero trust in this country's History Compilation Committee. Those hypocrites would likely waste my time with pointless talk. Rather than waiting for them to hand her over, it's far more convenient to just send my people to retrieve her directly."
Roy stood with one hand in his pocket, the other pressed against the floor-to-ceiling window as he surveyed Tokyo.
"The History Compilation Committee probably won't deliver Yuri Mariya to you personally, King Roy. Let me share some news—the oldest Campione, Marquis Voban, has already arrived in Tokyo. Meanwhile, that fellow Gascoigne has also made suspicious movements in the English countryside."
The elegant princess cut a small piece of cake and brought it to her lips. As the former chairman of the Greenwich Assembly, her intelligence network was among the most extensive in the world—after all, the Assembly was essentially a gathering of gossips.
"The actions of Marquis Voban were within my expectations. This old man has come to Japan this time to 'rescue the damsel in distress.'"
Roy chuckled playfully, then turned to look at Alice, raising an eyebrow teasingly, "...As for Black Prince Alexander Gascoigne, I wonder if he'd be so enraged at the sight of you now that he'd lose his rationality?"
Before him, Alice was dressed rather scantily. She wore a semi-transparent gauze dress, beneath which was nearly a bikini-like undergarment. Vast stretches of her snow-white skin were on full display in the room—especially since this was a hotel, making it all too easy for one to imagine some intimate scenario between the two.
Alice's features were exquisitely refined, flawless in their perfection. Her natural noblewoman's demeanor and enviably slender figure resembled a lily blooming in a royal garden, the kind of presence no man could ignore.
Her delicately arched brows furrowed slightly as she replied with mild displeasure, "...My relationship with Alexander Gascoigne isn't what you imagine it to be, and I'm afraid it won't satisfy your peculiar interests, King Roy."
"Then you ought to put on more clothes. Standing before you is a man in the prime of his youth."
"You've already seen all there is to see of my body. A few more glances won't make much difference. In the past, I had to wear such heavy sleepwear just to keep warm. Now that my health has improved, of course I should allow myself some liberation."
The two gradually fell into bickering, their dynamic bearing no resemblance to that of a kidnapper and his hostage.
Just then, heavy footsteps suddenly echoed from outside the presidential suite. Hearing them, Roy's expression finally shifted.
