Chapter 62: [62] The Old King is Dead, the New King Shall Rise!

Tokyo Branch Office, History Compilation Committee, Japan—

"Has the King left Tokyo yet?"

Sitting at the head of the office desk, Sayanomiya Kaoru asked wearily.

"According to the latest intelligence, the King has already headed to Haneda Airport and is preparing to depart Tokyo. Before leaving, the King demanded that Japan provide him with a sufficient number of excellent mikos within seven days and send them to Jerusalem. If we fail to comply, he threatened to settle both old and new grudges, saying... he would make us prepare to find a new capital."

The staff member of the Tokyo branch answered with a bitter and fearful smile.

"Prioritize the King's demand above all else. Notify the entire History Compilation Committee that for the sake of Japan's survival, everyone must do their utmost to fulfill this task. Inform all major sorcery families in Japan—no more hiding or holding back. If they have daughters capable of serving as mikos, they must offer them to the King. This is Japan's crisis, an unprecedented national calamity. Only by uniting can we overcome this disaster!"

Exhausted, Sayanomiya Kaoru spoke. Since the arrival of the two Kings in Japan, she had not had a moment's rest, constantly dealing with emergencies. Now that the two Kings had finally left, she could finally breathe a sigh of relief. Even though the aftermath would still be troublesome, it was far easier than facing the two Kings directly.

Though still a high school student, she lived up to her role as the Tokyo Branch Chief of the History Compilation Committee. Her orders were ruthless yet decisive—the only correct solution under the circumstances.

Bowing their heads completely and submitting at the feet of Roy, the King—this was Japan's decision.

The subordinates in the office nodded silently. The events that had transpired in Tokyo were too horrifying, leaving them utterly shaken.

The material losses Tokyo had suffered were secondary. The most terrifying news was that Marquis Voban had been defeated—possibly even killed—in battle against the new King. This news had swept through the mystical world like a hurricane, throwing Eastern Europe's mystical society into complete chaos.

One was the oldest known Demon King, the other a newly ascended King who had only recently slain a Heretic God. Common sense would dictate that Marquis Voban should have held the upper hand in battle. Even if a victor emerged, death should have been an impossibility.

This was an unprecedented event in the modern mystical world—the first time in over two hundred years, since the appearance of the first modern Campione, that a Campione had died.

Though there were seven Campiones in this era, the last had slain the first. Truly, the Old King was dead, and the New King had risen!

Roy's fearsome reputation now spanned the entire world, even faintly surpassing that of the Eastern Cult Leader. Having slain the most ancient Demon King, shown no hesitation in killing his own kind, and engaged in battle without pause in Tokyo—an international metropolis—Roy's name had quietly come to be regarded by the global mystical community as the most ruthless and powerful Campione of the current era.

"Any news from the Seishuuin family? Their most outstanding daughter has already been taken by the King."

Like the Sayanomiya family, the Seishuuin family was one of Japan's Four Great Houses, effectively the true rulers behind the scenes of Japan's supernatural world. Yet even so, faced with such a terrifying Demon King, all the so-called Four Great Houses could do was grovel and beg for the King's mercy.

"What could possibly happen? When the current head of the Seishuuin family heard that Ena Seishuuin had dared to stand in the King's way, he nearly died of fright. He's already severed all father-daughter ties with Ena Seishuuin, no longer recognizing her as part of the Seishuuin family. He's even issued new directives within the family to adopt an heir from a branch family as the new successor."

A subordinate from the Tokyo branch office shrugged as he delivered the news.

Hearing this, Sayanomiya Kaoru sighed inwardly. Though the decision was cruel and heartless, it was undeniably the best course of action for the Seishuuin family. Devoid of familial affection, yet utterly pragmatic.

"What about Amakasu Touma?"

Mentioning her subordinate, Sayanomiya Kaoru showed a hint of concern. This subordinate was highly capable, and she was reluctant to lose him.

"Amakasu Touma survived, but the sword that stabbed him was laced with magic. Our rescue was a bit slow, and his bodily functions have been severely damaged. He's lost more than half of his kidneys and will spend the rest of his life in a wheelchair."

"Well, surviving at all is the greatest stroke of luck for him. I can't ask for more."

Amakasu Touma's fate was within Sayanomiya Kaoru's expectations. The department chief shook her head but said nothing further.

"Report on Tokyo's damages."

"Akasaka and Roppongi districts suffered heavy losses. Shinjuku Gyoen has been completely destroyed—rebuilding it will be extremely difficult. As for casualties, the numbers are still being tallied. Please brace yourself; Tokyo's casualties this time are likely substantial."

"A hundred and sixty years ago, Marquis Voban annihilated the city of Zadar in the Austrian Empire. Who would have thought that Tokyo would suffer a similar fate a hundred and sixty years later? Still, should we count ourselves lucky? At least the entire city wasn't wiped out. Such is the power of the Demon Kings of the earth—utterly unstoppable."

Sayanomiya Kaoru's voice trembled with suppressed emotion.

Her subordinate dared not speak, keeping his head bowed in silence.

"Come up with a good excuse. An incident of this scale can't just be brushed off as a gas leak explosion."

"Chief, what if we say a meteorite fell on Tokyo?"

"That's not a bad idea. But how do we explain the battle between angels and werewolves witnessed by so many civilians?"

"That'll require magicians and curse technicians to do their best in erasing civilian memories. Then the government can suppress online discussions. As long as we keep this from becoming a trending topic, it should be manageable."

"Very well. Proceed with that plan."

"..."

After much discussion, the Japanese History Compilation Committee finally established a solution for the aftermath.

"This time, my decision bears significant responsibility. Although I was also deceived by that elderly figure in the Netherworld to make such a choice, someone must be held accountable for this matter. I have decided to resign from my position as Director of the History Compilation Committee and relinquish my inheritance rights to the Sayanomiya family."

The seventeen-year-old high school girl bravely shouldered all the responsibility.

No one opposed her, as someone indeed had to take the blame—and Sayanomiya Kaoru was the perfect scapegoat.

...

While the Japanese History Compilation Committee was embroiled in heated debates, and the entire world's occult community had thoroughly memorized—and would never forget—the name Roy Crowley, Roy himself had already arrived at Haneda Airport, preparing to depart for Jerusalem.
