Mushoku Tensei: Reincarnated as a Beast Race

Chapter 72: 72 - The Cruelty of the World We Live In

Rygar walked through the streets of Voltand, his eyes scanning every detail around him. He told himself to stay alert, to observe, to read the signs of the environment. After all, he didn't want to miss a fateful encounter due to a lack of attention—that would be quite embarrassing. But after fifteen minutes of wandering aimlessly, he sighed.

It was a stupid idea.

Thinking that simply walking around would make some puzzle piece fall into place or reveal a new path in fate—maybe the Human God was just a fraud? After all, even without being able to see the future, he could have predicted that I would go to Brighstone.

He should have known better. Shaking his head in frustration, he decided it was time to return to the Adventurers' Guild. Eris's identification should be ready by now, and he wanted to congratulate her.

It was at that moment, as he turned to leave, that he bumped into something.

Or rather, someone.

The light impact was followed by a small thud on the ground. When Rygar looked down, he saw a little girl sitting on the floor, blinking up at him in surprise. She appeared to be around three years old, with reddish-brown, messy, and tangled hair, and large, vibrant green eyes. Her clothes caught his attention: a makeshift dress, clearly patched together from a much larger garment. But more than that, since he had his Magic Eye activated, he could see—this child had quite a lot of mana... What was she, three or four years old at most? Yet her mana was three times greater than the normal amount for someone her age.

For a moment, Rygar froze. Something struck him in a strange way, like a light tingling at the back of his neck, a sense of recognition where there should be none. He looked into the girl's eyes, and in that green depth, he saw something unusual. There was intelligence there—far beyond what one would expect from a child so young. It was as if she was evaluating him, trying to understand him, just as he was studying her. And then, something deeper emerged—an inexplicable, almost instinctive connection that made his skin prickle slightly.

Before he could react, the little girl quickly got to her feet, her gaze determined and her voice firm for someone so small.

"Big brother! Can you help me?"

The attempt to sound mature, mixed with her childish tone and serious expression, was something Rygar found incredibly cute. He crouched down to her level, his eyes still analyzing every feature of the little stranger.

"Young lady, I don't see anyone with you. What is a child as small as you doing here alone?"

The little girl took a deep breath, crossing her tiny arms as if trying to adopt a more serious demeanor before answering:

"Mommy said: run and ask the friendliest big brother for help!"

Rygar furrowed his brows.

"And where is your mommy?"

The girl pointed in a specific direction without hesitation.

Immediately, Rygar used his Magic Eye and sharpened his hearing. His heightened senses picked up what was beyond normal reach—the sounds of a struggle, muffled blows, the clang of a blade... and then, something worse. The sound of fabric being torn, the silent cries of a woman.

POV: Lilia Greyrat

The biting wind of Voltand's streets carried the bitter scent of soot mixed with the sweat and grime of the alleys. Lilia Greyrat ran, clutching her daughter to her chest, trying to think of a way out of her predicament.

She knew the risks of traveling alone to the Asura Kingdom. It was dangerous, and only a matter of time before they ran into trouble.

If only she could find Paul, Zenith, or anyone else from Buena Village... That would be the ideal scenario. But reality did not grant her such luxury. The only viable option had been to hire an adventurer as an escort to the Asura Kingdom. Many adventurers looking to travel there accepted such jobs to earn something along the way.

But that decision proved to be a fatal mistake.

The Latreia family had not sent her away empty-handed, so at least she had money to pay for protection. But fate was cruel. The adventurer who accepted the job never intended to help her. His deceitful eyes had shown his true intentions from the start, and now, all she could do was run.

Her bare feet echoed against the damp cobblestones, each step sending jolts of pain through her injured leg. But she couldn't stop. She couldn't falter. She couldn't let him catch them.

The wall before her loomed like a faceless monster—a dead-end alley. A crushing despair consumed her. She looked back. She could try to run the other way, but her injured leg made her an easy target. Anguish turned into silent tears.

I couldn't protect my own daughter.

I couldn't protect her in the Latreia house.

I can't protect her now.

I couldn't stop them from taking Norn…

I… couldn't do anything…

That was when she felt two delicate little arms around her neck. The warmth of Aisha's embrace brought her back. Through tears, Lilia forced a smile and looked at her little girl. Her heart clenched upon seeing that, despite the fear reflected in those big green eyes, Aisha wasn't crying. She understood. She always understood.

Lilia gently stroked her daughter's reddish hair. A normal child would be sobbing, but Aisha kept her mouth shut, holding back her tears. A genius. Her daughter was a genius. How many children would withstand such pressure without a single complaint?

She didn't deserve this girl. Then she saw it—a small hole in the wall ahead, possibly leading to some kind of shop. But to her, it was hope.

"Aisha, sweetheart." Her voice trembled. "You need to be strong now."

The girl nodded.

Lilia pointed to the small hole in the alley wall—too narrow for any adult to pass through, but just the right size for a small child to squeeze through.

"I want you to go through that hole and find the friendliest big brother you see on the street, understand? Don't leave the public's sight, under any circumstances. Stay where people can see you."

Aisha hesitated for a moment but then nodded.

"Tell him that you are very talented and will learn anything he wants to teach you. Tell him you will be very useful."

The little girl bit her lip, fighting back tears, and then silently nodded. Lilia held her tiny hands one last time before pushing her toward the opening. Her small body barely fit through, scratching her arms. When Aisha finally made it across, Lilia collapsed onto the ground, sobs consuming every part of her being.

Now, all that was left was to wait.

Whether her daughter would survive or not depended on fate.

She looked around, searching for anything she could use as a weapon. She found a piece of rotten wood and clenched it tightly between her fingers. She wouldn't give up without at least trying her luck.

Footsteps echoed through the alley. He was close.

Lilia held her breath and waited.

The moment he emerged from the darkness, she attacked, swinging the wood with all her might. But the man laughed. His body moved quickly, dodging the strike with sharp reflexes. With a casual movement, he disarmed her, snatching the wood from her hand as if it were a toy.

"Hoooh? Looks like you know a thing or two about swordsmanship..." He licked his lips. "But you're rusty. Or maybe just injured." His eyes landed on her wounded leg.

Lilia tried to run, but a swift sweep of his leg sent her crashing onto the ground. She screamed in pain as her body hit the cold stones. Before she could react, the man flipped her over, pressing her against the damp wall of the alley.

"Where's your little daughter?" His whisper dripped like poison. "Don't tell me you abandoned her? I'd actually be willing to wait three or four years until she grows up... Just imagine."

Lilia froze. A shiver ran down her spine.

"Mother and daughter together... That would be a dream come true."

The terror was immediate. She gagged as bile rose in her throat. In a desperate attempt, Lilia crawled toward a pile of trash and grabbed a wooden stake. But before she could use it on herself, a brutal foot crushed her hand against the ground.

She let out an agonized scream.

The man laughed, leaning over her. His rough fingers gripped her clothes, tearing them slowly, as if savoring the moment.

"Why the rush?" He whispered in her ear. "Let's have some fun first... Though I'd love to try your corpse afterward too."

Disgust consumed Lilia entirely. She struggled, screamed, fought, but he was stronger. He held her down firmly, as if she were nothing more than a broken toy.

Aisha… Did she make it…?

Suddenly, a blue glow cut through the darkness.

It was too fast for Lilia to follow.

The blade sliced through the air like silent thunder, and in the blink of an eye, the man's arms were severed.

The adventurer's smile vanished.

Seconds later, the pain struck.

"AAAAAAAAAHHHHH!!!"

His desperate scream echoed through the alleys of Voltand.

And then, amidst the blood and agony, Lilia saw the silhouette of a young man holding Aisha in his arms, his golden eyes glowing with relentless fury.

POV: Rygar Adoldia

One of the greatest advantages of this world is that if you're strong enough, you can do whatever you want to any despicable bastard you dislike. That was impossible in my previous world.

The difference in physical strength between people was small, so it wouldn't be easy, and besides, torture wasn't well regarded in modern society. Even against heinous criminals, they were protected by human rights. But here... here I could do whatever I wanted with trash like him.

I looked at the woman collapsed in front of me. She was still dazed, tears falling uncontrollably. She trembled slightly, not just from the cold but from the trauma of what had almost happened. That was too close. Far too close.

I let out a heavy sigh and took off my cloak, handing it to her to wear. Then, I picked up the little girl who was still watching everything with wide eyes and placed her in her mother's arms.

"Your mommy is okay, see?" I said with a smile, trying to ease the situation a little.

Aisha smiled slightly, and Lilia held her tightly, still in shock. I stood up and turned toward the bastard lying on the ground, screaming desperately as he clutched the stumps that remained of his arms.

"Wait here for a moment," I murmured to the two of them before dragging the man to a nearby alley.

With a simple gesture, I activated a special barrier. It was a new magic I had been testing—a combination of barrier magic and wind manipulation, making it soundproof. No noise would escape. He could scream all he wanted. No one would hear.

I crouched beside him, watching the panic take over his eyes.

"Don't worry..." I touched the wounds and used healing magic to stop the bleeding but didn't restore his lost limbs. "This is going to hurt a lot more for you than for me."

A fierce smile spread across my face as the man began to plead. He knew. He knew he wouldn't leave here intact.

For the next few minutes, only I witnessed how desperate he became, how ridiculously small a predator could be when you stripped him of his fangs.

Five minutes later, I emerged from the alley, adjusting my posture and wiping my hands clean. The smell of blood was still strong in the air, but it no longer bothered me.

Rape was one of the most heinous acts in my previous world. And here, though more 'common' due to the existence of slaves, it was still utterly despicable.

I had no doubt that this was something I would never get used to. And I truly hoped never to change my mind about it.

I turned back to the two, who were still leaning against the wall. Lilia was clutching Aisha tightly, as if afraid she would disappear if she let go even a little. When they saw me, they quickly stood up and bowed deeply.

"Thank you so much, sir!" Lilia said, her voice trembling.

"Thank you so much, big brother!" Aisha echoed, her small voice still carrying a touch of innocence, though she tried her best to sound respectful.

I raised a hand, motioning for them to stop.

"No need to bow. Are you two okay?"

Lilia nodded, though still somewhat in shock. I stepped closer, noticing a wound on her arm. When I reached out to touch it, she almost flinched but forced herself to stay still. My palm glowed with a soft green light, and the injury began to close. Her eyes widened slightly, but she said nothing.

"Big brother, are you a mage?" Aisha asked, watching in fascination.

"Aisha!" Lilia scolded immediately.

But I laughed, picking the little one up again.

"Yes, I'm a mage. Why? Do you want to be one in the future?"

Aisha opened her mouth excitedly to answer but then glanced at her mother and hesitated. Her eyes sparkled for a moment before she lowered her head and murmured:

"I... I can't..."

My brow furrowed slightly. What did she mean by that?

With a small sigh, I placed her back in her mother's arms and crossed my arms.

"Then, what happened to you two?"

Silence hung in the air for a moment before Lilia took a deep breath and began to tell her story.
