Chapter 4: Chapter 4. Discovery and Discovered
Part 1
Gardening has been one of Zenith's hobby. She has grown and nurtured sone flowers and also some tree around the house. From a blue flower that looks like an orchid, to a rose but with black petals. And trees that she grew aren't to produce any fruit, rather, they would produce flower too.
However, one tree has caught my eyes, mainly due to its peculiarity. That tree has a characteristic of sakura, like short trunk, dense crown, serrated leaves that can change color depending on season, and so on. However, its flowers appear more like lily flower to me.
Guess this is truly another world huh.
"Via, can you water that flower over there?"
"Kay!"
Nodding, I began carrying a bucked of water to the destination Lilia pointed at.
We both are watering the flowers and whatever plants Zenith has cultivated. She would occasionally water them herself, but sometimes she's busy doing her work or tending other like me or Rudeus. And so, because she's now busy, Lilia is the one who cares for it. And I take an initiative to help her.
I look at the flowers in front of me. A handful kinds of flower, from the one that looks like orchid, to a green rose. Never seen that. Guess I can duscover a lot of new things in this world huh.
As I'm watering the flowers, I take a look at them, noting any peculiarity. There are some orchid-looking flower that are instead of being epiphyte, they rood deeply in the ground, and their leaves look more palm leaves. And there are also some that look like water lily but rooted on the ground, with theur leaves are also lot smaller.
There are multiple animals here too. Like an iguana looking animal with wings, hanging on top of one of the trees, right on one of its many branches. There is also a very small snake, I think that's slithering on ground. Since Lilia doesn't comment anything, maybe it's safe and not aggressive.
Some insects too, like that golden beetle latching itself on wooden fence. Or millipede that's slowly exiting the garden area.
Oh, there's also a butterfly here. With black wings, and reddish body. It is also covered in black furrs, but only in some area.
"Young miss! Don't touch it!"
"Huh?"
Lilia warned me then rushed to me, pulling me away from the butterfly. I'm not going to touch it tho. Why? Is it poisonous? Can sting?
"Why?"
"It is Black Wasp Butterfly. It can sting you. It's painful too."
Huh. So there are creatures like that too. Seemingly harmless but can sting. Thinking about, I notice there's a pointy thing in its butt.
"It can sting? Does it have dangerous poison? Will my body turn into a plant if I got sting?"
"What? No! It's just painful. If it's dangerous, your parents would get rid of it long time ago."
Huh. Okay. No magical dangerous butterfly that can curse you.
Part 2
Walking through corridor on second floor, I began to take a look at my surrounding.
A quite long corridor with some doors leading to completely empty rooms, spare bedrooms, or storeroom, as all important and necessary rooms are in first floor. The floor is made of wood, with yellowish walls, and some wooden carvings decorating them. This house is quite huge, at least a little bigger than the one I had in my previous life that was left by my deceased parent.
However, the quality of the furniture and decorations of my previous house were a bit higher then this, and the walls were more reinforced. But I can't really compare them as one was from modern time. Especially with the government's standard the civilians must adhere.
I'm sure with higher technological developments, this house would be much better in condition. But I'm in mediaval world right now, at a village at that.
Hm, look like I let my mind wander a bit.
"Rudy, Lilia gave me some snacks. Wanna taste it? Rudy?"
No answer.
Huh, it seems he's busy doing whatever he's right now. Is that why he's not in first floor, but in second floor? That boy, ever since being able to walk, has been much more frequent at wandering the house, even begining to wander in second floor.
Strangely, he never attempted to get outside, always indoor. He is not interested in outside at all. Even if there's something interesting happening outside, he would only stare at it through window. And if he still can't see it, he would just give up.
Fearing outside? Why? Or is he just not interested at all?
"Rudy, where are you? Rudy?"
Is he actually in the outside? No, Rudy has an unreasonable fear of outside. Always glancing through window, but too afraid to go outside.
I then decided to search in many rooms here.
Locked rooms, no chance. Neither me nor Rudeus know where mother and father keep their keys.
Spare bedrooms? Empty.
Some empty rooms? Nope.
There are two storerooms here, but one is empty.
That leaves only one. A storeroom that contains a big chest. I don't know what it actually countain, but definitely not money. Maybe some souvenir, or maybe even a grimoire...
A sudden imagination of certain elf with metaphorically glittering eyes having 1v1 with a mimic floods my mind.
Shaking my head, I peer inside, and voila, Rudy is truly inside here. He's currently eying the chest with thoughtful expression, a serious face displaying a myriad of thoughts. He looks quite adorable roght now. My adopted brother, despite his perverseness, can still be considered adorable.
Well, he's still a child. It's normal I guess. Well, there are many criminals, or even a tyrant, who are displayed to be adorable back when they're just children...
Wait, focus.
"Rudy there you are."
"Sis?"
I enter the room and as I do so, I pock my eyes onto him. He's quite surprised with my arrival. What? Not wanting your sister to discover you're here? Is this your secret base?
"Rudy, here's snack from Lilia. Want some?"
I offered some of the snacks to rudy. Some kind of jelly candy. Soft, bit elastic, sweet but not so much. Its taste isn't the best either, a bit bitter and starchy. But it's still good.
Rudy perked up and quickly approaches me. He's all smile while taking some from my hand.
"Oh! Thanks!"
"Anyway, what are you doing here?"
"Uhm? No, nothing. Just curious about that chest over there."
I look around, before appraching the chest. Mostly wood, and quite good in quality too. As I moved its cover, I realize it's not locked.
"You can move it easily?!"
"Yeah?"
Rudy looks at me with amazement. His eyes are darting between me, my hand, and the chest. One of the perks born--hatched as non-human is that I'm generally stronger than normal human of the same age.
"I can only move it barely. Guess you're really strong, sis!"
"Hehe, of course!"
I answered proudly, my eyes radiated pride, and my lips forned smug grin. Sometimes, it's quite nice to get praised, even if it's from a child.
"Want me to open it for you?"
"If course! I'm curious about its inside. It's maybe a treasure chest!"
"Doubt it, but okay."
As I said that, I swung my arm holding its lid upward. The lid quickly opened, resting on the opposite side of me. Inside, I can see books with leather cover. The covers are colored in brown mostly, with some are darker than the other.
Huh? Isn't book kind of expensive in this world? From what I heard of Lilia and Zenith, except in major and important cities, paper is generally expensive. In this village, in this rural area, books that consist a lot of paper must cost quite a fortune right?
Well, there are only five of them, so maybe not that much?
"Book huh?"
"What? Disappointed?"
"No, nope."
Rudy attempted to lift one of the book. But he's not that strong yet. He probably can still lift it and take it out from the chest, but he would most likely drop it immediately to the floor.
So, as I pity him, I quickly grab the book and help him to lift it. We then placed the book on floor carefully. The leather cover is wuite smooth, and probably good quality too. Another reason to be mire careful with it.
I then opened the cover, and take a look inside. The paper is a bit yellowish, and the edges are wuite rough.
Well, I heard that paper during mediaval era us also in poor quality. That's why most of them would turn yellow after sometime.
But, isn't this fantasy world? Can't they do something about it with magic? Is there a magic that can prevent any corrosion and rotting process, and preserving something to last longer?
Well, maybe paper with that kind of enchantment is rare, and would ve way more expensive than this one.
But that's not the problem. The real problem is....
"Can't read."
"Me neither."
Huh, when you're presented with book, but can't read...
Maybe we need to start to learn reading. Honestly, I wonder why Zenith and Paul have not teach us reading? Well, maybe we're just children not even two years old yet. Maybe they would start teaching us at 5.
But I think Rudeus nor I would be that patience to waut that long. Rudeus is already staring at the book with curious look. I'm myself akso curious about the content. Maybe...maybe it's magic? Magic spell?
I god damn hape it's magic. I can learn both swordsmanship and maguc that way.
Part 3
It's night, and it's a bit silent here...well, if you ignore the bed creaking and some 'noises' on another room. So far, the normal sounds I can hear is just from insects, and sounds of any nocturnal animals out there.
Maybe owl, cricket, and the hissing of unknown animals I never heard of in my previous life. Well, honestly I don't think if any of those animals would have the same names as in my previous life. Even if Lilia answer the na e of the animal, it won't ring any bell unless they describe it in detail.
I'm now staring at the ceiling. Brown, wooden ceiling with some polishment. There's no unnecessary decoration here, and also only two handful of toys, since I and Rudeus don't play with toy too much.
Hm... another reason to suspect him to be a reincarnator.
Anyway, that adoptive brother of mine is currently laying right beside me.
Yeah, you heard it. We're sleeping in the same bedroom. Right beside each other. I once asked Zenith and Paul to separate our bedroom. But they both denied it, saying it will strengthen our bond. Not to mention our bedroom is near theirs,so it will be easier for them to reach us if we need something.
Huh.
"Can't sleep?"
A voice comes from besides me. Rudeus. It seems he can't sleep yet as well.
"Yeah. You?"
"Can't. I still think about that book."
Yeah me too, brother, me too. You're not alone at this.
"You notice some pattern drawn on it?"
"Yeah, looks like magic right?"
"Yep! Too bad we can't read it at all."
Yeah, too bad. Maybe we should start leaning to read.
"Rudy, should we convince mother and father to teach us? They will be agree right?"
"Maybe."
Rudy shifted his position. From facing the ceiling, to facing me, head resting on his left arm.
"What? Got perverted idea? I'm just 1.5 years old you know?"
"What?! No! Of course not! From where you learn that?"
"Heh, from previous life."
At that, my brother's eyes widen slightly. He blinks his eyes repeatedly and began eying me from head to toe. His mouth is ajar, looking at me with shocked expression.
Huh? He never suspected me?
"That never occurred to you?"
"No, I just thought you're a genius. Unlike myself."
Huh, he seems to have some kind of inferiority complex? Okay, that never occurred to me either. A shut-in, with inferiority complex...brother, were you bullied in your past life?
Or maybe I'm just overthinking everything.
"You too huh."
"Yep."
We just stared at each other for a few moments, before a laugh can be heard from both of us.
"I guess we both have questions and stories to tell."
"Yep, but this is already very late. I think I'm going to sleep. Thus body isn't ready for staying late yet."
"Yeah, let's discuss it tomorrow maube."
With that, we drifted to sleep.
