Mushoku tensei: The renegade heir

Chapter 17: The great forest

"uuugh!!!...Nggg!!!"

I don't know how much time passed but I was already regaining consciousness, even though I had healed myself the pain persisted in my body, maybe I should use more magic.

When I opened my eyes I was in the same place as before, in this huge forest with even bigger trees that extended to the horizon of my vision, and I could also feel that the climate was significantly tropical, there was only one place in the world with this kind of climate...

"So the big forest huh?..." I muttered to myself as I tried to get up, my body was numb and sore, perhaps from having been in an uncomfortable position for so long.

"Shit...Shit!!!" I shouted as I hit one of the trees, now I had remembered that being called Hitogami and I couldn't be more pissed off about it.

Now I was at the eastern tip of Millis in an unknown part of the forest, alone and without any help or any kind of indication to go to civilization...

plus the way back to Ars is about two years...

yeah, I'm screwed...

"haaa!!" I let out a frustrated sigh as I sat back down on the branches of that tree, I didn't fully trust Hitogami, but even I knew I shouldn't wander aimlessly in a forest...

"or unless!" I muttered as I jumped up from the ground and began to inspect the place where I fell, I hadn't taken anything with me except my sword and it wasn't anywhere...

I spent about ten minutes until I found it under the wood I fell on, luckily it wasn't broken...

After that I conjured a stone pillar and stood up over the huge trees, although that took me a while, I would estimate that the trees were around a hundred meters high...damn, how the hell did I survive this?...

After that I was finally able to look over the trees and...nothing...

Don't get me wrong, I mean nothing since all I could see were green leaves that extended to 360 degrees of my vision, according to what I read at the academy the Beastfolks, Dwarves and Elves live in this forest...but I don't see a single sign of civilization for miles!!!!

"Haaaaa!, you have to be fucking kidding me!!" I screamed at the top of my lungs, the sound of my voice echoing around the place until I stopped hearing it and sighed.

It was already getting dark, and as I remembered, Hitogami said to wait where he was until night... but he never specified what time...

With resignation I got down from the pillar using wind magic and sat back down in the same tree where I was...

"It's good that there are no mosquitoes in this world..." I muttered as I closed my eyes again.

...

I don't know how much time passed and I was even surprised because of how quickly I fell asleep even in that situation, and don't get me wrong, ever since I woke up I had been feeling heavy and as if my mana reserves were half full...

But let's leave that aside for the moment.

Since what woke me up were the sounds of broken branches snapping.

I opened my eyes immediately and held the hilt of my sword tightly as I tried to look around, but it was terrifyingly dark, I couldn't even look at my hand in front of me, so I had to use fire magic to light up and...

"Grrrrr!!!..." before me was what seemed to be a huge wolf about three meters tall, it had six eyes and blue thorns coming out of its spine.

"A mutated monster..." I muttered to myself, I already knew of the existence of these beasts that as their name says mutate due to the enormous amounts of mana in the forests and what better place than the great forest, right?...Is this why you wanted me to wait, Hitogami, bastard?!!!

I held the hilt of my sword with my right hand and with my left I began to gather mana as I slowly stood up from where I was.

"Shit...come on Paul, you've faced bandits more powerful than this thing...what are you worried about?.." I muttered to myself in an attempt to cheer myself up.

"Grrrr raaaah!!" The wolf stopped tempting me and lunged at me at a terrifying speed that I could barely dodge with a sonic boom.

I jumped about twenty meters away from the creature, threw a fireball at it and then a stone bullet.

The wolf moved with incredible agility despite its size, dodging my fireball, but fortunately my stone bullet hit its right paw, momentarily incapacitating it.

"Whoa...come on!!" I screamed and started running towards the creature and it did the same, but not before creating a Quagmire beneath me.

The wolf with an injured leg fell squarely into the mud, which gave me the opportunity to cut its throat with a long sword of silence.

"Yeeeee!!" The wolf gave a terrifying scream as he writhed and blood fell from his throat, eventually losing strength and falling to the ground with an anticlimactic end.

"Haaaa...that's what happens when you mess with me!" I shouted with joy, although I knew this beast wasn't much of a problem for me.

"Haaaa...and now?"

I looked around in disappointment as I tried to think of what to do for now, even with all my skills I can't help but get impatient from the simple fact of being lost in the forest.

But...

(crack!, crack!, crack!)

I heard the sound of leaves being stepped on and branches moving behind me.

"Another monster?..." I muttered as I unsheathed my sword again.

[Did father hear it?, the blue wolf left here]

I heard a child's voice from a distance...but, it was in the Beast God's language.

Lucky for me for researching languages huh?...

I used fire magic again to illuminate my surroundings and unsheathed my sword hesitantly.

The people coming quickly noticed the sudden light and jumped out of the shadows.

There were three of you...two adults and a child...

[haa...it's a child, what are you doing here? Millis is far away]

One of the beastmen asked.

[Taes!, it's a human!,] "Boy, what are you doing here? Where is your family?" The other guy said switching from the God Beast language to the human one.

[...my name is Paul Notos Greyrat and I was caught in a mana disaster in the Asura Kingdom in the central continent, when I woke up I was here...] I muttered

The beastmen widened their eyes at the sight of me, then nodded.

"I see, so a mana disaster huh?...and why should we believe you?" One of them muttered.

[father... there is a child alone in the forest, he must be lost] the child murmured.

The beastman put a hand on his chin and looked me up and down and then looked behind me and his eyes widened.

"Hey...y-you killed that blue wolf?..." The guy muttered in shock

"Haaaa, yes, when I woke up he was about to attack me but I was able to defeat him" I explained.

The beastmen looked at each other and the boy looked at me with open admiration.

"Kid...so you're from the central continent huh?..." One of them muttered "do you know how to get to Millis?" He continued and I shook my head.

He sighed and took his partner with him so they could chat.

They spent about five minutes like that and then turned to look at me again.

"Kid, the reason we are here is because we were chasing that blue wolf, I don't know if you know, but inside them they usually have very valuable mana crystals and also their meat "It helps us feed our tribe," one of them explained.

"But from what we see, you killed him..." The boy muttered.

"Yes... but that doesn't matter, do any of you know the way to civilization? I must begin my journey back to the central continent as soon as possible..." I muttered.

The guy I think was called Taes nodded and the other sighed.

"Yes, we can help you, but the closest way is through the village, do you want to come?" The guy muttered.

From what I see in their ears and tails they must be Adoldias and their villages are on top of the trees...

"Okay...I'd like to ask for your help...guide me" I muttered as I put my sword away.

The men and the boy smiled and approached the wolf that i had killed.

"We haven't introduced ourselves, my name is Kirio, this is my brother Taes and that little one over there is my son Kydar" one of the men said and with his sword he began to open the wolf's abdomen.

After a few minutes of searching inside it, I found a green stone about 30 centimeters long and wide and then put it in a bag that he had.

After that they skinned the wolf and took some pieces of its meat and we started walking, it took about two hours to dispatch the wolf so I guess the moon is already up.

Still, we walked all night long...until in the early morning we reached a specific area with trees and I could see several torch lights and some ladders in the trees.

"This is our village, you should rest around here for now" Taes said as we started to climb the stairs.

Despite the hour, there were already several villagers awake doing different tasks, it is not surprising that they all stared at me since I was a human in their territory.

But then I found out that it was because of the appearance of my clothes which were completely torn and stained with blood...

But still, the villagers were kind enough to give me a room of my own and so when I got there, I dropped my sword on the ground and lay down on the bed and fell asleep instantly.

...

Who knows what time it was when I woke up, but it was past noon, but I didn't care.

I stood up and looked at the village from a balcony, obviously there were hundreds of Beastfolks everywhere and the vast majority looked at me with suspicion.

I could only sigh at this and return to my room.

Although I appreciated your hospitality, it was not the time to stay here so I took my sword and left the place.

I wanted to find someone who knew the way to Millis so I started searching around the place speaking in the Beast God language but it seemed that none of the inhabitants knew, only Wind Port but that place was much further away.

Thank goodness I knew some of the Beast God's language, so I asked some of the villagers for help to take me to their leader.

[Human, you're too far from Millis...]

I heard a voice behind me, I turned slowly and behind me was an Adoldia warrior with cat ears and a tail, his hair was gray and his skin was brown.

He was everything you could expect from a beast race warrior, but right now he was looking at me with disdain.

[Ehh... Good morning sir, I suppose you don't know about my situation, right?] I murmured fearfully, if I got into trouble he would make enemies of this entire village.

[Hmmmm... Come with me, the boss already found out about your presence] he murmured, he took me by the arm tightly and began to pull me towards one of the houses suspended in the trees of the village.

Aggg!, bastard that will leave a mark!!

After being practically dragged, we arrived at a hut of considerable size from the others.

The man slowly knocked on the door in a kind of pattern and we waited.

[Come in...] a male voice said from the other side of the door.

We entered and the man who escorted me knelt slightly and then looked at me.

[Boss, I have found this child wandering around the village for no apparent reason] he said and then pushed me forward almost making me fall.

In front of me was a man just as muscular, actually now that I see him the complexion of the beastmen hardly changes.

Gray hair, brown skin and big muscles.

[Yes... Taes confirmed it to me last night, but I decided to let him rest, but it is good that he is already here... child, do you understand this language?] the man asked and I nodded.

[Ha!, that's good, I'm not good at the human language... Trinon, can you leave] the man said and the man who accompanied me left

[Taes told me that you are from the central continent right?... what is a child from that place doing here and alone?] the man asked while looking me up and down.

[Well... let me explain from the beginning...] I murmured and began to tell the whole incident omitting the Hitogami thing.

The village chief looked at me with wide eyes and then put a hand on his chin.

[I see... that is complicated... oh!, by the way, my name is Gustav, and yours?] he asked.

[Paul Notos Greyrat...] I murmured.

Gustav raised an eyebrow and then nodded to himself.

[I see... you're a noble, you say you want to go to Millis right? That's a month's journey from here, are you sure you can do it alone?] he asked with confusion.

[Hah! Believe it or not sir, I'm advanced in the three sword styles! I can take care of myself!] I argued and Gustav just raised an eyebrow.

[I see, but it's a month's journey to Millis, the journey is simple you just have to follow the sacred path of the sword, but it will still be a month's walk, do you have enough money? Water or food?] Gustav began to bombard me with questions that only put me off.

(sigh)

[I honestly hadn't thought about that... but I have no choice, my mother and brother are in danger, every day counts...] I muttered impatiently.

[I understand...but still, the return trip is about two years away and besides, the rainy season is about to start and...

Gustav muttered but was interrupted by a strong wind that came through one of the windows.

[haaaa...forget it, the rainy season has just started, you won't be able to get out of the forest in time before you drown...I suggest you stay until it passes] Gustav muttered.

[And how long is that?...] I muttered.

[Approximately 90 days, but the water dries up completely after 15 days, so it would be 105 days in total...] Gustav muttered with an apologetic face.

You have to be kidding me!!!.

[I-I don't think it's a good idea...I'm very good at magic, I could get out of the forest before the rain becomes a problem!!] I said with fear but the wind only increased.

"..."

"..."

We both stayed silent as the whistling of the wind grew louder with each passing second.

[I'm sorry boy, I understand your situation, but you arrived in the worst conditions, you can stay in the meantime in the room that was assigned to you, besides... you will need new clothes] he murmured.

I instinctively looked at my clothes that more than clothes could be considered rags due to how torn they were and the blood that had dried on them.

[I understand...] I murmured defeated.

And so tragically my stay in the great forest began and also that night I wished that Hitogami would appear in my dreams to tell me what I should do but he never appeared.
