Mushoku tensei: The renegade heir

Chapter 3: What it means to be the heir

I am now three years old since I came into this world, and therefore I can now run, jump and do many things that I longed to do but could not because of my baby body...

And the most important thing is that he stops spending so much time in the room!, But for some reason my mother can't...according to some maids they say that she has an unknown disease that makes her body weak...

I don't know how serious this is, but it's still sad to see that my mother can barely walk a little before getting tired.

But leaving that aside for the moment, I took advantage of my new autonomy to explore the mansion and as I could see it is huge...

And by big I mean really big, I started walking two years ago and although I can't do it as often I've spent all that time exploring the mansion and I realize that not even explored half of it, This mansion is so huge, but the maids seem to know it perfectly, a skill that I find fucking impressive.

Also...I've noticed some not so good things...like the maids seem somewhat desperate for my attention to one of them exclusively or that I always have a group of maids following me wherever I go!...

I tried to ask my mother what this was all about and...

"The reason they behave that way towards you is because they are fighting each other to be your personal maid" It was what my mother said.

"personal maid?...how does that work?" I asked with confusion.

"Well...how do I explain it to you? Well, you see, it is very common in noble houses for them to have a maid to serve them in more intimate and...private ways."

"...ha, I see, that must be great, right?"

"eeeeh, yes, yes of course"

"And you have a personal maid, mom?"

"No, that's just something that applies to men..." My mom said with a murmur at the end.

She didn't tell me any more, but that gave me an idea of what it was like.

Basically these girls were trying to win my affection so that when they grow up one of them can serve me in a more private way, And from what I heard, private maids have many more privileges than a normal maid, not to mention that some of them would work for the heir of a noble house...

It doesn't sound so crazy that they are fighting over that position now that I think about it, although I don't think it's appropriate to bring up this topic with a child of my age...

And the phrase "serve in a more private way" I already know what it refers to and it seems crazy to me, But who am I to deny it after wasting the last few years of my worthless life on nonsense?.

If the universe took pity on my pathetic soul and gave me a second chance, I would take it with both hands without asking anything.

So now I just have to bear the burden I was born with, right?...

...

"Where is he?! Did I tell you to take care of him?!" My father's voice echoed through the halls, immediately bringing me out of my thoughts.

"Lord Amarant your son is right here next door don't worry!!" One of the maids replied.

He turned the corner of the hallway and when he saw me his face relaxed slightly.

"...hi dad" I murmured.

"Paul...come with me" he said and took me to a large room on the other side of the mansion, it took us half an hour to get there.

We entered the room and it was quite large, with a finely decorated desk in the middle.

The room was also decorated with drawers and some pictures where my father looked younger and another one of a person who looked like my father but older, I suppose that was my grandfather, right?...

"Dad...what did you want to talk to me about?" I mumbled but my father didn't say anything and sat down at his desk and pointed me to a chair.

He takes the chair and places it in front of him, He let his chin rest on his hands as he looked at me.

I instinctively got nervous but my mother suddenly spoke.

"Paul, your birthday is in two years, I've already selected the guest list from now, but we have to work on your education and manners from now on, you're at the age"

"... I understand, and what does that entail" I muttered.

My father narrowed his eyes as he looked me up and down, I could only shrink in place under his gaze, my father was not surprised by this, after all you don't expect another reaction from a three year old boy.

"I assigned you an etiquette teacher and for your basic education, you will learn to read and write, in addition to basic arithmetic" He explained in a calm tone but anticipating my reaction "Furthermore, as heir ot the Notos house, it is strictly necessary for you to demonstrate your abilities."

"...I see, but father, could I make a request?" I said as I looked into his eyes.

My father raised an eyebrow at this.

"what do you want?"

"Well... a couple of days ago one of the maids did something weird with her hands and a green glow came out of it, she said it was called magic and... I want to learn it"

"...magic huh? I don't see how that can help you"

"Well father, in my defense you said that as heir of the Notos I must demonstrate my abilities, right? What better ability than a child who already knows how to read, write and do magic at only five years old?..."

My father continued to stare at me but at this he began to stroke his chin in contemplation, as if considering my request.

"...okay, you will learn magic, but only if you learn to read and write before you turn four, plus you will also have to learn fencing" my father declared in a stern tone.

Ughh no...anything but that...

"Okay, dad, thank you very much," I said with a bow.

My father nodded at this, it seemed like it was time for me to get out of here, but I still wanted to ask...

"Father?...Can I ask you one last question?..." I murmured.

"What is it?" He asked.

"Why is it so important that he is the heir?"

My father's eyes widened as he looked at me and his expression turned sour as he stood up from his seat.

Oh shit, I think I screwed up...

I instinctively closed my eyes as I waited for a blow but nothing came, I opened my eyes and saw my father looking at a portrait.

"Why is it important that you are an heir, you say?..." He muttered as he continued to look at the portrait, after a few moments he turned around and looked me in the eyes.

"Because without us, this country will go to hell, After the king, we are the most powerful in the entire Asura Kingdom. If our faction fell, the kingdom would fall, Thousands of people would lose their homes and lives by the enemies who will take this as an opportunity to attack Asura, I know I'm asking too much of you at your age, but this is your responsibility, my son," he said in a solemn tone.

"I-I see, so our faction keeps order in the kingdom?" I asked.

"... basically, we are in charge of a large portion of the Kingdom and it is our responsibility to take care of it"

"I understand, in that case I will do my best not to disappoint you dad" I said firmly

My dad smiled at this and patted my head, a gesture he has done just a few times in my entire life.

...

Since that day a month has passed and my father assigned me to an etiquette teacher who at the same time is my teacher to learn how to read and write.

Her name is Debora, she is a middle-aged woman who has spent her entire life serving the Notos house.

She seems to be a very educated woman and focused on what she does.

"Very well young master, first you bring your right hand to your chest, with your left hand on your back and you bow" she said

I followed suit and did the best I could.

"Well done young master! You just need to practice a little more and you will be able to do a perfect noble salute!!" She said enthusiastically.

And the first time you said I had classes with her, she didn't seem as enthusiastic as she does now.

"The young master is too young to start his studies, it will be a waste of time" she argued at first but I showed her how wrong she was!!

Because of this young mind that I possess I can learn things much faster.

"Okay, now let's move on to using cutlery at the table," she said as she pulled a bag out of her backpack filled with cutlery and spoons.

By the way, we are in one of the many gardens in the mansion, although I don't have a view outside because there is a huge protective wall, but that's something.

And this is where the hardest part came, I can memorize the greetings part and all that stuff, but I never understood why rich people need so many damn Frets for food!!

I spent about an hour trying to memorize the functions of each and every piece of cutlery on the table, which was harder than I thought, but I got the general idea.

After this, Debora has me review the letters of the alphabet of this world, which are nothing like those of my world, and relating the sounds and meanings is one of the most tedious things that I have never done.

But as I said before, because of my developing brain I consider that I have already made slight progress in reading and writing, but you can't expect too much in just one month, right?.

And thank goodness that Deborah is a great teacher and a very patient one who explains to me very well what I am doing wrong so I can do it better. I wish my parents had been like that when I was learning multiplication tables!!

But there was no point in complaining about it anymore, now I just had to focus on what the future holds for me.

And I didn't mention it before, but it seems that in this world people only celebrate birthdays every five years, don't ask me why because I don't know, it seems stupid to me, where did this come from?, what purpose does it have?.

Also, the most important birthdays are the 5th, 10th and 15th, and on the latter you are legally considered an adult...

I guess things from medieval worlds, right?...

"Very well, young master, that's all for today, remember tomorrow at the same time" Deborah said with a smile And so I took my way back to see mom and tell her about my day.

...

But from across the garden there was a tall man with a grey beard who watched young Paul leave.

The man was Amarant Notos Greyrat, his father, and he always monitored his son's learning process from afar.

Deborah approached him quickly when she saw that the child was no longer in sight.

"So, how's it going?" Amarant asked.

"Perfectly well my Lord, I'm even surprised at how quickly the young master learns, it's like he's a genius" Deborah said in amazement.

This statement brought a proud smile to Amarant's face, and he had also noticed it, the way his son speaks and behaves is not that of a child his age, he is very calm and mature.

Without a doubt Paul Notos Greyrat was a genius among his class and there was no better candidate to be the heir of the prestigious Notos faction than him.
