Chapter 70: Chapter 70: Provincial Examination
"Yoriichi, release your Zanpakutō for me to see," Azrael said immediately upon seeing Yoriichi's blade.
Yoriichi looked at him hesitantly, then glanced around at their surroundings.
Azrael suddenly realized that he was still in his rented apartment and quickly calmed down. "Forget it. I'd have to pay for damages if you burn the place down."
Azrael wasn't particularly short on money, but he didn't need to waste it like that.
Hearing this, Yoriichi nodded silently.
After dismissing Yoriichi from his mind, Azrael breathed a sigh of relief. Finally, he had one more trump card.
Yoriichi's success also confirmed that his magical modifications were feasible.
"Zoro's Zanpakutō won't be three swords," Azrael muttered. After all, there were only a handful of dual-blade Zanpakutō in Bleach, let alone three.
But that concern was still far in the future.
Calming his scattered thoughts, Azrael began his daily meditation routine.
A few days passed without Azrael finding an opportunity to test Yoriichi's Utakai. His main concern was making too much noise and attracting unwanted attention.
Just as Azrael was lost in thought at his desk, Miss Victoria walked into the classroom with an unusually serious expression.
"Quiet!" She tapped the table and spoke loudly. "Students, listen carefully to what I'm about to tell you."
Seeing their usually easygoing teacher so serious, the students in the advanced class immediately focused their attention.
She cleared her throat and announced, "Next week, we'll be traveling to Pixar to participate in the Greenridge Province Unified Examination."
Before the students could ask questions, she continued, "The association is hosting the Greenridge Province Unified Examination this year. It's an exam for all registered third-year high school students in Lore Cardia throughout Greenridge Province."
Her words fell like a bomb on calm water, immediately creating a commotion of noisy voices throughout the classroom.
However, Azrael and Gabi remained unsurprised. After all, they had already learned about it from Gustav.
Azrael had initially worked hard to prepare for the exam. Now, while that might still be part of his motivation, he was doing it more for the Crimson Oath Society.
Seeing that the students had nearly finished their discussions, Miss Victoria continued, "As an examination, there are naturally no material rewards."
Hearing this, the other students expressed disappointment.
But Azrael shook his head slightly. "It's called a unified provincial exam, but it's more like an early admission test for major universities."
How could there be rewards for an early admission exam? Being admitted early is the greatest reward.
Sure enough, Miss Victoria's voice rang through the classroom again. "I hope everyone will still take this exam seriously.
"Because if you achieve an excellent ranking, you'll have the opportunity to be admitted early to universities like Pixar University and Velkairos University."
Hearing this, the students gasped, contributing to Earth's greenhouse effect.
Azrael thought the stakes were almost too good to be true. He already had a guarantee from Velkairos University, but this time, he was going to try Pixar University.
After all, he'd never forgotten Lucian's promise.
When he sensed the cards in his mind... "The advantage is mine!"
After school, when Azrael returned home and opened the door, he saw a figure that left him numb.
"You're here?"
"I'm here."
Too tired to play word games with Lian, Azrael said directly, "What do you want? Another mission?"
"Do you really treat me like a slave?"
Just because Azrael had been a wage slave in his previous life didn't mean he wanted to be one forever.
The intelligence fee from some time ago still hadn't been paid, either.
After hearing this, Lian remained silent for a moment, then pulled a piece of material from his pocket and handed it to Azrael. "This is the reward for your last intelligence report."
Azrael accepted the material and couldn't help but widen his eyes.
It was a silver-level material called "Heaven's Net Star" (Gold).
Azrael said in disbelief, "Is the Crimson Oath Society really that generous? Was that information really that important?"
Hearing this, Lian didn't know whether to laugh or cry but immediately answered his question. "On the one hand, it's because that information was extremely valuable. On the other hand, the association has a new assignment for you."
Upon hearing this, Azrael rolled his eyes and said unhappily, "I knew you weren't being kind. Tell me, what's the matter?"
"You already know about the Greenridge Province Unified Examination, right?" Lian leaned back on the sofa and stared at the ceiling in a daze. "With your level, it shouldn't be difficult to achieve a good ranking."
What the association hopes is that when you choose a school, you won't select a coastal institution but rather an inland one."
Hearing this, Azrael first stood up, then sat back down.
He naturally understood why the Crimson Oath Society wanted this. Judging from their performance in Velkairos alone, they had already planted enough operatives in coastal cities.
Now, the Crimson Oath Society wanted to drive Azrael like a nail into the heart of the association.
Unfortunately for them, they didn't know that Azrael wasn't under their control.
At this moment, however, Azrael couldn't show that he was fearless. He immediately put on a sneer and waved the material in his hand. "No wonder you're so generous. So this was your plan all along."
Lian smiled bitterly. "Don't be angry. Although the society has some reach inland, its members are all at the bottom levels.
We're counting on you to climb higher. There will naturally be more support in the future.
Besides, the society's support for you should exceed what the association provides now, right?"
Azrael fell silent after hearing this. What Lian said was true.
However, he had earned these materials through his own abilities and cunning. How could that be considered mere support?
Moreover, the Crimson Oath Society had given him these materials so confidently because they believed he was bound by contract and that they could do whatever they wanted.
He'd never forgotten when Memphis came to threaten him.
So-called gifts from fate always come at a price.
The original owner had simply paid the price for him.
Furthermore, people with different ideals can't work together. Perhaps a poison master could accept this arrangement, but Azrael couldn't. No matter how flawed the current system was, it was better than the Crimson Oath Society, which casually used humans as materials.
Based on the information he had obtained, Azrael was still unsure of the Crimson Oath Society's plans, but he had no interest in betraying them.
Although he thought this inwardly, Azrael pretended to be touched yet remained stubborn. "I'll take the materials, but that doesn't mean I won't do the work."
Seeing this, Lian chuckled, stood up, and patted Azrael on the shoulder. "When you get to Pixar, someone will contact you."
After speaking, he left Azrael's apartment without looking back.
As he watched Lian leave, Azrael's eyes gradually turned cold. "Tsk, Crimson Oath Society."
You really think you're angel investors."
