Chapter 195: Chapter 195 : The First Act on Hell Island
The darkness of the ocean welcomed Tatsumi and Akame. As their bodies broke the water's surface, the deafening explosion from Endeavor's attack muffled into a deep, vibrating thrum, a new heartbeat for the dark underwater world. The water temperature, colder than the humid night air, felt sharp, but was immediately ignored by the adrenaline flooding their systems.
They moved as an efficient unit. Akame, with a waterproof compass on her wrist and her photographic memory of the map, acted as the navigator. Tatsumi, with his dragon's strength, became the engine, his power easily fighting against the strong undercurrents. Above them, the water's surface shimmered with flashes of orange and red, a deadly fireworks display marking the battle raging above.
"Status, Owl's Eye?" Hawks' voice came through their communication, crackling slightly due to the low-frequency underwater transmission.
"We are moving towards the infiltration point in the southern sector," Tatsumi replied, his voice calm. "All according to plan."
"Be careful. Endeavor's attack has triggered an underwater defense response from the PLF. I'm detecting several sonar patrol drones ahead of you. Dive deeper, pass below their effective range."
Following Hawks' direction, they dived deeper into the darkness, where the light from the battle above could no longer penetrate. They now moved in total silence, relying only on Incursio's sensors and Akame's instincts.
High above I-Island, Endeavor was a meteor of burning rage. He wasn't attacking blindly. Every move was calculated to inflict maximum strategic damage, while still looking like the rampage of an enraged hero. His target was the secondary power generator station in the industrial sector, the power source for most of the automated defense turrets on the north side of the island.
"FEEL THE WRATH OF THE HEROES!" he roared, a performance for the news helicopters and for the villains below. He unleashed a massive Prominence Burn, creating a small sun that illuminated the entire island before it slammed into the generator station.
The resulting secondary explosion was far larger, disabling dozens of defense turrets in an instant. An attack path was now open for the hero fleet.
Chaotic enough for you, Hawks? Endeavor thought to himself, as he turned to face a PLF flight squad trying to intercept him. Do your part.
On the coral island command post, Leone swore softly as she stared at the monitor. "That old fire-man is completely nuts," she said to Hawks. "He's going to draw all the bees out of the hive with that attack."
"That's the plan," Hawks replied, his eyes dancing between several screens. One showed the hero fleet beginning to advance, taking advantage of the opening Endeavor had created. Another showed red PLF dots swarming to the northern sector to hold back the assault. And a third, the most important one, showed two cold blue dots moving relentlessly underwater, getting closer to the now relatively unguarded southern coast of I-Island.
"Chaos is the best diversion," Hawks muttered. "Tatsumi, Akame, what's your status?"
After passing several sonar nets and avoiding drone patrols, Tatsumi and Akame finally arrived at their destination: a giant water drainage tunnel hidden under the cliffs on the south side of the island. This was their back door.
They swam into the tight darkness of the tunnel. The water was cold and smelled of metal. After a few hundred meters, they finally found the exit: an emergency ladder leading up to a maintenance hatch.
With a single powerful push, Tatsumi opened the hatch. The humid, hot air from inside the island immediately greeted them. They were in. They were now in the belly of the beast, inside the service corridors that were the lifeblood of I-Island.
The sound of the battle above was now a constant rumble, making the entire structure vibrate. Emergency lights flickered, creating long shadows that danced on the concrete walls.
They began to move through the corridors, following the layout they had memorized. They were ghosts in the machine, unseen by the great battle happening miles above them. As they passed a junction, they suddenly stopped. Two PLF technicians were panicking in front of a control panel, trying to reroute backup power to compensate for Endeavor's attack.
Before the two technicians could even notice their presence, Akame had moved. She shot forward, not with her sword, but with speed and precision. One quick chop to the neck of the first technician, another to the temple of the second. Both fell unconscious without making a sound. Akame and Tatsumi quickly dragged their bodies into an empty storage room. No trace left.
They continued their journey, deeper into the heart of the island. Finally, they arrived at a massive, dark cargo elevator shaft.
Akame checked a device on her wrist. "This is it," she whispered. "According to Kageyama's layout, this shaft connects directly to all the sublevels, including the research lab at the base of the main tower."
They stood at the edge of that endless vertical darkness, the rumble of the battle above serving as the soundtrack to their mission. The path to their final destination was now open.
Tatsumi looked up into the shaft's deep darkness. "Time to go up," he whispered, his voice a promise in the midst of chaos.
