Chapter 6: Chapter 6: A Day Like Any Other
The day had begun like any other. Kairo woke up early, feeling the soft warmth of the morning sun shining through his bedroom window. It was a peaceful, quiet day—one that felt normal in every sense. He had been training hard with his father, and his Quirk had shown promising growth, but today, school was his only focus.
His mother, Rika, had already prepared a hearty breakfast, and as always, her comforting smile greeted him as he sat down at the table. She was warm, gentle, and always ensured that everything was in order for his day. Ryuta, his father, was already in the living room, reading some reports about his own missions.
"Good morning, Kairo," Ryuta greeted, looking up with a proud smile. "How's the training going?"
"I'm getting there," Kairo replied, taking a bite of his breakfast. "Still working on control, but I think it's coming together."
Ryuta chuckled and ruffled his son's hair. "You've got this, Kairo. Don't worry."
It was a simple moment, a moment of connection between father and son. There was no sign of what was about to unfold later.
The school day passed uneventfully, the usual banter of friends and classmates filling the air. Kairo's mind wasn't fully focused on the lessons. He kept thinking back to his training, how his Quirk was steadily growing under his father's careful guidance. Kenta had challenged him again, but today, Kairo felt like he was on a completely different level.
During class, his teacher, Mr. Tanaka, called on him to answer a question. Kairo blinked, snapping back to reality. "Uh, yes, Mr. Tanaka?"
"You were daydreaming again, Kairo," Mr. Tanaka said with a grin. "But the answer you were looking for is correct. Keep it up."
Kairo smiled sheepishly. Despite his distracted mind, school was still a welcome normalcy. It felt comforting—just a regular day in a world that seemed, for now, to be safe.
After the bell rang, Kairo met with Kenta and Mei as they walked out of the classroom.
"Let's meet up later after school. I've got some new ideas I want to try with my Quirk," Kenta said excitedly, his telekinesis making the books in his backpack hover slightly above his shoulders.
"Sure, we'll catch up later," Kairo replied with a grin.
As Kairo stepped out of the school building, he felt a lightness in his chest, as if the world was simply waiting for him to continue growing, to continue becoming someone greater. He had his friends, his family, and his growing sense of purpose. The day was normal—nothing extraordinary—but it was good, and that was all he needed.
When Kairo got home, the house felt unusually quiet. The familiar sounds of his mother humming a tune in the kitchen weren't there. Instead, a heavy silence hung in the air. Kairo's heart raced a little. Something felt wrong.
"Mom?" he called out, his voice breaking through the stillness.
He walked through the house, following the quiet hallway toward the living room. There, he found his mother, standing near the door, her face pale and tight with concern. Ryuta, his father, wasn't in sight.
"Mom, where's Dad?" Kairo asked, his voice trembling slightly.
Rika looked at him, her eyes filled with unspoken dread. "Kairo... your father... He's gone."
The words hit Kairo like a physical blow. "What? What do you mean?"
Tears welled up in his mother's eyes. She walked toward him, pulling him into an embrace. "He... he left for a mission earlier today. He... he didn't come back." Her voice broke. "There was a fight. He fought a villain, and... the outcome wasn't what we hoped for."
Kairo's heart sank. He pulled away from his mother, his breath coming in short gasps. "No... this can't be real. I... I just saw him this morning... He was fine."
"I know, Kairo," Rika whispered, wiping her eyes. "He fought bravely... but the villain was too strong. Ryuta tried to protect the people, but... it wasn't enough."
The weight of the words crashed down on him. Ryuta, his father—the man who had always been there for him, the one who had taught him so much—was gone. Kairo's legs gave way, and he sank to the floor, his mind in a haze. His father, the person he admired more than anyone, had lost his life in the fight against evil. The reality of the situation began to settle in, and his heart felt as if it were being crushed under the weight of it all.
The News:
Kairo sat on the floor, staring at the door, as his mind replayed the day over and over. His mother sat next to him, her hand on his shoulder, but Kairo couldn't feel her touch. He felt numb. It didn't feel real. Ryuta was supposed to come home. He was supposed to be there when Kairo needed him. They were supposed to keep training together, to work side by side.
Suddenly, the doorbell rang. Rika stood up and answered it. A few moments later, a police officer walked into the living room, his face grim.
"I'm sorry for your loss," the officer said. "We were able to recover your husband's body. He fought with all his might, but the villain... he was a powerful one. Ryuta did everything he could."
The officer's words felt like a slap in Kairo's face. His father was gone. A hero—his hero—had fallen in battle.
That night, Kairo couldn't sleep. The pain of losing his father still gripped him tightly, but something inside him was starting to change. His father's death wasn't in vain. Ryuta had fought for the people, for what was right. And though Kairo felt the loss deeply, he understood now more than ever the importance of standing up against evil.
He walked into the backyard, the cool night air biting at his skin. He stood there in silence, looking up at the stars. His father had always told him to stay true to his ideals, to fight for justice, no matter what. And now, Kairo had to live up to that promise.
"No more injustice. No more evil," Kairo whispered to himself. "I'll make sure of it."
The pain of his father's death was still raw, but it became the fuel for Kairo's resolve. He would become a hero, not just to honor his father, but to make sure that no one else would lose someone like he had.
He clenched his fists, his heart steeled with the fire of determination. From that moment on, he would never allow evil to go unchecked. His father's death had shown him the consequences of inaction—and Kairo would make sure he was never weak, never powerless. He would fight for justice with all his heart.
