My Hero Academia: The Hidden Pulse

Chapter 9: Chapter 9: Winter Vacation - Dreams, Resolve, and a Hero’s Encounter

The winter air was crisp and refreshing as Kairo, Kenta, and Mei made their way through the snow-covered paths, their breath visible in the cold. They were on a small trip, enjoying the fleeting calm of the winter vacation. The hustle of school life had temporarily faded, and for today, there were no worries about the future, just a group of friends savoring a quiet day in the mountains.

Kairo glanced up at the sky, his eyes narrowing as snowflakes danced around him. It was a perfect winter day, one that felt timeless, like the world was holding its breath. He glanced at Kenta, who, as usual, was walking with a swagger.

"You know, one day, I'll be the number one hero," Kenta boasted, a wide grin stretching across his face. "No one will be able to match me. I'll be the strongest. The top of the hero world."

Mei rolled her eyes but smiled softly at her friend. "You say that every time, Kenta. You'll get there one day, no doubt. But you'll have to work hard for it."

"I'll do whatever it takes," Kenta said, his voice full of determination.

Kairo chuckled lightly, not wanting to be left out of the conversation. "I want to protect people. That's all. I don't need to be the strongest. But I'll make sure I'm strong enough to protect those who can't protect themselves."

Mei looked at him, her smile widening. "You'll be able to do it, Kairo. I believe in you."

The three friends fell into a comfortable silence as they continued walking. The soft crunch of snow beneath their feet was the only sound, adding to the peacefulness of the moment.

"I can't wait for us to all attend UA together," Kenta said, breaking the silence again. "We'll be classmates, training to become heroes. It'll be amazing."

Kairo nodded thoughtfully. "Yeah, I've been thinking about it a lot. It'll be a place where we can all grow and push ourselves to be better." He glanced at Mei, who was walking beside him, her eyes distant as if lost in thought. "You're going to be there too, right?"

Mei looked up, startled by the question, but quickly nodded. "Of course. We've all worked hard for this, and I'm sure we'll get in. Together."

For a moment, Kairo felt something stir inside him, a quiet warmth that spread through his chest. But it wasn't something he could name, not yet. Mei's presence was always comforting, and for some reason, today, it felt different. Her gentle smile made his heart beat a little faster, and his thoughts wandered, as they often did when she was near.

The awkward silence between them lasted only a moment before Mei blushed and quickly looked away, pretending to inspect the snowy path ahead. Kairo blinked in confusion. What was that? He couldn't explain it, but something in the air felt different, like the weight of something unsaid hung between them.

Before Kairo could dwell on it any further, the sound of a sudden crash broke through the peaceful atmosphere. A distant explosion echoed in the air, followed by the sound of glass shattering.

"Something's wrong," Mei whispered, her eyes widening.

Kenta's posture immediately shifted, his expression hardening. "A villain. I knew we'd run into one eventually."

Kairo's pulse quickened, but he forced himself to remain calm. This wasn't just some ordinary day out. His instincts told him they had to move quickly.

As the trio rushed toward the sound, they saw a large figure standing outside a nearby shop, a trail of destruction in its wake. The villain—a tall, hulking figure with a grotesque, monstrous appearance—was grinning manically. The air around it shimmered with a dangerous, chaotic energy.

"I've been looking for some fun!" the villain shouted, laughing cruelly. "Who's first?"

Kairo's heart pounded in his chest. His thoughts raced, but he didn't hesitate. He clenched his fists, feeling the familiar surge of power building inside him. He had faced danger before, but this—this felt different. The villain was strong, and they didn't have backup. They were on their own.

"Stay back," Kairo said to Kenta and Mei, though his voice was steady despite the tension. "I'll handle this."

Kenta looked ready to protest, but Mei grabbed his arm. "Let Kairo do this. He's strong. We'll support him if we can."

The villain laughed again, his voice like thunder. He took a step toward Kairo, his hands crackling with energy. "You think you can stop me? This is going to be fun!"

Kairo stepped forward, his body tensing. He could feel the shockwave quivering inside him, ready to be unleashed. He focused, gathering the force at his core, but before he struck, the villain lunged at him, swinging a massive fist.

In that split second, Kairo used his shockwave to create a barrier in front of himself, absorbing the impact of the punch and pushing the villain back. The force of the shockwave rippled through the air, shaking the ground beneath them. The villain staggered, momentarily disoriented, but Kairo didn't let up. He was already moving, sending another shockwave straight at the villain's chest.

But the villain wasn't done yet. He bellowed in anger and charged forward again, faster than before. The battle raged on, each of Kairo's shockwaves pushing the villain back, but the villain's resilience was incredible. His blows were strong, and Kairo found himself struggling to keep up with the sheer force of the attack.

Finally, with a deep breath, Kairo focused all his energy into one final, powerful shockwave, sending the villain flying backward, crashing into the side of a building. The villain lay there, unconscious, but the victory felt hollow to Kairo. He panted, exhaustion settling in, but his mind kept racing. He hadn't won by sheer strength alone; he still had a long way to go.

Kenta and Mei rushed over to him, concern written on their faces.

"That was amazing, Kairo!" Kenta said, but Kairo only shook his head.

"It wasn't enough," he muttered. "I need to be stronger. I need to protect people. This… this wasn't enough."

Before they could respond, a familiar voice interrupted them.

"Well done, young ones."

All three turned to see a figure approaching them, his presence overwhelming. A giant of a man, dressed in a red, white, and blue costume with a symbol on his chest. It was none other than All Might, the Symbol of Peace.

"You fought well, but there's always more to learn," All Might said with a grin. "It takes more than just power to be a true hero."

Kairo stood there, stunned, looking up at the towering figure. "You… you're All Might."

The legendary hero nodded, his smile unyielding. "That's right. But what matters is how you use your power. The path you take. You showed resolve, and that's what matters most."

Kairo's heart skipped a beat. Meeting All Might felt like an honor, but it also reignited his determination. He wasn't just going to stop here. He needed to be better, stronger—not just for himself, but for everyone around him.

As All Might offered them a few words of encouragement and a few pointers on how to hone their abilities, Kairo found himself with a new resolve. This was only the beginning.
