Chapter 20: Chapter 20: The Clash
"Hidden Mist scouts," Hachidai sneered. "Pathetic infiltration."
There were no tactical briefings, no coordinated planning. Before Rin could even decide whether to ready her medical tools, the Uchiha had already charged into the mist like streaks of black lightning. In an instant, fire lit up the fog, and the air rang with explosions and the clash of steel.
After all, this squad included over twenty Uchiha—among them, three were jonin with three-tomoe Sharingan, and more than ten bore two-tomoe eyes.
"Be careful," Shisui said with a smile as he glanced back at Rin. In the next moment, he vanished and silently set up a wire trap in the surroundings.
Rin gripped her blade but did not join the fight—she was here as a medical ninja.
Screams from the Hidden Mist echoed through the fog.
"Sharingan! It's the Uchiha—!"
"Our Water Release is being completely countered!"
"Retreat! Hurry—!"
The voices abruptly cut off.
A wave of heat scattered the mist. Hachidai stood among seven bodies, flicking blood from his short blade. Not a single Uchiha had sustained injury—not even heavy breathing.
After all, they held the advantage in both strength and numbers.
"Clean up the battlefield," Hachidai ordered without turning around. "Check them for intel."
A low-ranked genin rushed forward, crouching to inspect the nearest corpse. Rin followed, her eyes scanning the scene. The Mist ninja's eyes were still wide open, his throat slit with a blade so fine it looked like a hairline—typical Uchiha swordsmanship.
The genin reached out to flip the corpse carelessly, making Rin frown. Fortunately, the body wasn't booby-trapped. As it was turned, a waterproof map slipped out from the ninja tool pouch.
"Senpai!" the genin called, holding up the map. "It's a border defense map!"
Hachidai appeared beside him in a blink. His three-tomoe eyes scanned the map briefly.
"Fake. The location of the third outpost is off by three kilometers." He tossed the map into the mist. "Classic Mist trickery."
An Uchiha jonin appeared in the treetops. "Chakra signatures detected northeast—likely this group's backup."
"All units, prepare to pursue." Hachidai formed a tiger seal, then gave Rin a sidelong glance. "Medical ninja, stay close to Shisui. Don't slow us down."
Rin was just about to nod when she noticed a purplish bruise on the inside of one corpse's wrist. Alarmed, she quickly pulled back the sleeves of the others and discovered the same mark on all of them.
"Wait!" She blocked Hachidai just before the pursuit began. "These people were poisoned."
Hachidai frowned. "We didn't use poison."
"It wasn't from combat." Rin activated her chakra scalpel and made a small incision in one of the bodies. A dark-purple fluid oozed out.
"They were poisoned before deployment—most likely to…" She trailed off before concluding,
"To prevent intelligence leaks. This toxin targets the brain and destroys memory the moment it activates. Mist Village clearly planned this in advance."
Rin sighed inwardly. So ruthless… Even if these ninja hadn't run into us, they'd still have died when the poison kicked in. These were suicide units.
Hachidai's gaze shifted slightly. His Sharingan swept over the corpses again, as if reassessing Rin's value.
"You know poisons?"
"Mm." Rin nodded, pulling a small vial from her tool pouch and collecting a tissue sample.
"If I can analyze the toxin, we might be able to trace it back to its source."
Hachidai paused, then abruptly issued a new order.
"Shinji."
An Uchiha jonin appeared at his side in an instant.
"Captain."
"Take three chunin and escort the medical ninja back to the temporary base for analysis," Hachidai commanded.
"The rest of you, continue pursuit. Stay alert—they may be leading us into an ambush."
Shinji nodded. "Understood."
As Rin swiftly collected samples, she noticed Shisui silently gripping his kunai, his black eyes filled with a maturity far beyond his years. As the youngest Uchiha on the team, he had been positioned in the safest part of the formation.
"Shisui will go back too," Hachidai added suddenly. "No place for kids on the front line."
Shisui pressed his lips together but did not protest. He exchanged a glance with Rin, and both smiled faintly.
Hachidai observed their interaction, thoughtful.
---
The temporary base had been set up at the edge of the forest, beneath a rocky overhang. Shinji and two chunin guarded the perimeter, while Rin and another chunin worked inside the tent. Shisui sat quietly in a corner, his gaze fixed on Rin as she handled the test tubes.
"This is extract from Ghost Blue Fern," Rin said, holding up a glowing blue vial. "It numbs the nerves and dulls pain—normally used for anesthesia. But combined with some unknown elements, it now... destroys brain tissue?"
Thanks to her unique bloodline ability, Rin had been able to identify plants and their properties since childhood. Now, with her training in medical ninjutsu, her pharmacological skills had improved dramatically.
Her brow furrowed. The liquid in the vial shimmered with a strange blue-violet glow under the light. She carefully dripped a bit of the toxin onto a glass slide and channeled chakra through her fingertip. A faint fluorescent reaction glimmered in response.
"This is… a variant of sea snake venom," she said, looking up at Shisui. "Mixed with Ghost Blue Fern. It paralyzes the nervous system and corrodes the brain."
Shisui's expression turned thoughtful.
"So those Mist ninja must have been carrying the antidote?"
"Probably." Rin nodded.
"They likely took the poison before deployment. As long as they took the antidote within a set time, they'd be fine. But if they died, the toxin would activate immediately and destroy their brains."
Suddenly, hurried footsteps sounded outside the tent. Uchiha Shinji lifted the flap and stepped inside.
"Any findings?"
Rin quickly explained her analysis. Shinji's three-tomoe Sharingan spun slowly.
"So, they weren't sacrificial troops... but rather—"
"Bait," Shisui cut in. "They deliberately carried fake intel for us to find."
Shinji's face darkened. He formed a seal and summoned a shadow clone.
"I'm warning Captain Hachidai now."
The clone vanished instantly.
Rin quickly packed up the equipment.
"This could be a diversion. We need to prepare for an attack."
At that moment, a distant explosion thundered through the forest. Firelight flared, painting the night sky red. Rin sensed an abnormal tremor in the plants nearby—a large amount of chakra was approaching.
"Enemy attack!" one of the Uchiha chunin outside shouted.
Rin and Shisui rushed out of the tent.
From the trees, five Mist ninja emerged. Leading them was a jonin with a Hidden Mist forehead protector, followed by over a dozen chunin already forming hand signs.
"Water Release: Great Waterfall Technique!"
A massive surge of water crashed through the outer defenses of the camp. Shinji roared, his Sharingan spinning wildly.
"Fire Release: Great Dragon Fire Technique!"
The fire dragon clashed with the rushing waves, creating an eruption of steam. Using the cover of the mist, several Mist ninja had already slipped into the camp.
"Watch out!" Shisui activated his one-tomoe Sharingan, his short blade flashing as he deflected a Mist kunai with pinpoint precision.
Rin rapidly formed hand seals.
"Earth Release: Earth-Style Rampart!"
A wall of earth surged up, blocking a hail of incoming shuriken. She simultaneously pulled out a few smoke bombs from her pouch and threw them at the advancing enemies.
"Medical ninja, fall back!" Shinji shouted as he clashed blades with the Mist jonin.
