My Life as A Death Guard (Warhammer 30K Male MC)

Chapter 72: Chapter 68: Whoa, Jumping Straight To Hand-Holding?

In the dimly lit library, the faint glow of three candles burned quietly, casting shadows that crept into every corner.

Hades sat across from Fernando, staring in disbelief at the three tarot cards spread before him.

The darkened library, strewn with ancient weapons, the golden inscriptions scattered across the floor, the blood marks on Fernando's face...

Hades blinked in surprise.

Wasn't Fernando supposed to apologize?

If not for Barasine urging Hades to come—and repeatedly assuring him that Fernando meant no harm—

Hades would've bolted to alert the captains the moment he saw this scene.

And now, here he was, sitting in this eerie circle.

Why did it feel like he was about to be sacrificed any second?

Fernando, however, sat opposite him with a calm yet serious expression.

According to his divination, this conversation required him to be honest and take control of the conversation swiftly.

"Hello, Hades."

"I apologize for meeting under such circumstances, but the situation is urgent, so allow me to get straight to the point."

"I've discussed this with Barasine. You'll answer my questions first, and after that, I'll give you the answers you seek."

"I swear, as the Chief Librarian, I need your truthful response. Please, don't withhold anything."

Hades swallowed, feeling that Fernando's words, combined with this scene, were... a bit crazy.

Was this how all psykers behaved?

Fernando's voice interrupted Hades' thoughts.

"Allow me to ask: Are you an Untouchable, or some other kind of being?"

"Or… can you restrict the use of psychic abilities?"

To an uninformed Librarian watching Hades fight Ugo, it might have seemed like Hades was indeed an Untouchable. But the seasoned Chief Librarian knew Hades' unique physique went beyond the typical traits of an Untouchable.

Hades pondered.

Would Fernando believe him if he said he didn't fully understand his own nature?

In Hades' self-assessment, he considered himself a mutated Untouchable. After all, the Emperor had indirectly acknowledged his special physique by bestowing him with the Scythe Obituary via the Sister of Silence and the Custodians.

So, Hades began to speak slowly.

"I believe my physique is a variant of the Untouchable."

"At present, I can restrict the powers of psykers and sever their connection to the Warp."

Fernando's eyes lit up at this, but he quickly pressed on, his urgency almost aggressive.

"But in the duel with Ugo, why didn't you simply sever his link to the Warp? As far as I know, an Untouchable merely makes psykers uneasy by their presence alone."

Hades replied,

"That's where I differ. I can currently only suppress the psychic energy or Warp fluctuations that come in direct contact with my body."

"My abilities…"

Hades frowned.

"…can't yet extend beyond my body."

Fernando, however, didn't appear shocked by this response. He simply reached out his hand towards Hades, saying,

"Now, sever my connection to the Warp."

Wait—this direct?!

Hades could hardly refuse the request, especially since he sensed that Fernando wasn't exactly in a stable state.

Besides, restraining him might offer Hades some peace of mind.

Hades focused, enveloping his right hand in his black aura, and reached out to grasp Fernando's wrist.

Fernando's pupils contracted.

—Silence—

Fernando had just finished communing with the Warp, and the faint humming still lingered in his ears. The moment Hades clasped his hand—

His world went silent.

His link to the Warp was severed, and a searing sensation shot up his arm.

Across from him, Hades' figure began to blur and take on a sinister cast.

Fernando blinked in disbelief, as though he needed confirmation. Looking down, he realized that the constantly warping tarot cards before him now looked as ordinary as regular paper.

This rookie—no, Hades—had truly severed the connection to the Warp!

This meant... he might be able to neutralize that entity!

A wave of exhilaration surged through Fernando's heart.

Sitting across from him, Hades exhaled deeply.

In his black field of "sight," Fernando's soul appeared as a radiant, pure white—a bright presence without the loathsome energy he often sensed.

When facing the sorcerer overlords of Barbarus, Hades could unmistakably feel the psychic energies they wielded, a sickening sensation, filled with foulness and revulsion.

But Fernando had none of that.

Good. You are pure.

Hades thought to himself, then released his grip.

Even the thought of prolonged, even minor erosion of another person's soul sent a chill through him.

"So, that's how it is," Hades said, looking at Fernando and waiting for his next move.

At that moment, a mix of exhilaration, relief, and fatigue flashed across the usually stoic face of the Chief Librarian.

"Very well."

But Fernando quickly returned to his serious expression.

"Hades, what is your perspective on the Warp?"

"Don't hesitate; I'm not interested in how you know or came to understand any of this."

It was possible that the Emperor's Sister of Silence and Custodians had shared something with Hades.

As the Emperor's close allies, the Sister of Silence and Custodians often came closer to the truth than the legions themselves.

Hades hesitated again.

Fernando was asking him to reveal his core knowledge.

But Hades had a sense that his opposite might have glimpsed a piece of the truth behind the Warp.

The urgency to find an Untouchable probably meant something involving psychic abilities and the Warp was at stake.

Hades wasn't fully aware of the relationship between the legions and the Emperor's only Untouchable forces—the Sister of Silence—but it seemed likely that the legions couldn't directly request the Sisters' help.

And any operation requiring the Sister of Silence' intervention would inevitably draw the attention of the Emperor and Malcador.

For the legions as a whole, this might not be a good sign.

Since Fernando had come seeking his assistance, and based on certain psychic phenomena he'd observed, Hades chose to withhold part of the information and replied,

"I believe that there are entities in the Warp that exist by the rules of that realm—and these entities bear extreme malice toward humanity."

"Psychics, who are more closely connected to the Warp, are more susceptible to their corruption and erosion."

As soon as he finished speaking, Hades noticed tears of blood once again trailing down Fernando's cheeks.

His voice, now even rougher than before, echoed out:

"Now I am certain."

After all, to the average person, the notion of entities within the Warp would sound like madness.

"You are the embodiment of the Wheel of Fortune from the divination."

Up until now, Fernando had only been able to find scattered references to the Warp in ancient texts.

Yet, here before him, Hades had effortlessly spoken truths that Fernando had only reached after grueling experiments and painstaking deduction.

"Now, I can address your questions."

"So, let me tell you a story."

"Have you ever heard of... Daemons?"
