My Name Is Uchiha Kuragami, I Beat The Villagers And Made Them Scream

Chapter 21: Bows And Shuriken

After reporting to the Hokage, Kuragami Uchiha's days finally settled into a rare period of peace.

The recruitment of civilian ninjas into the Konoha Military Police Force was progressing smoothly. Ever since the incident where Kuragami publicly rebuked the two advisors at the entrance of the Konoha Military Police Force, the impression of the Uchiha Clan among civilian ninjas had greatly improved.

Furthermore, when they heard that the current head of the Uchiha Clan was none other than Kuragami Uchiha, the one who had originally implemented the smiling law enforcement policy, many set aside their concerns and eagerly applied for positions.

Some newly graduated academy students who had not been assigned to a Jonin squad even came directly to the Konoha Military Police Force, hoping to secure a place there.

In less than a week, the Konoha Military Police Force successfully doubled its personnel, completing the expansion task set by Kuragami.

At the same time, under Kuragami's leadership, the smiling law enforcement policy was extended throughout the entire Konoha Military Police Force.

As for Kuragami himself, the clan arranged for him to live in a luxurious residence deep within Uchiha territory. After moving in, the first thing he did was set up an archery range in the courtyard of his new home.

With some free time on his hands, Kuragami's daily routine consisted of drinking tea, making rounds at the Konoha Military Police Force, fabricating evidence against Danzo, having the captured members of the Shimura Clan press their fingerprints on the documents, and then returning home to practice archery.

One afternoon, after returning from the Konoha Military Police Force, Kuragami changed out of his ninja vest, put on a haori, and began practicing archery in the courtyard.

At this time, he held his breath to concentrate and hit the target with two arrows in succession.

At that moment, his assigned housekeeper, Keiko Uchiha, entered the courtyard.

"Clan head, Kakashi Hatake, has come to visit."

"Let him in."

Kuragami replied without turning his head.

"Understood."

Shortly after Keiko left, Kakashi entered the courtyard, following her lead. After bringing him in, Keiko sensibly withdrew, closing the door to the backyard behind her.

"Hokage-sama's orders to capture the rebel ninja Orochimaru will officially commence the day after tomorrow."

Kakashi announced.

Kuragami didn't respond immediately. Instead, he kept his focus on the target, steadied his breathing, drew his bow, and fired another arrow that hit the bullseye.

Seeing this, Kakashi didn't press further. He simply found a pillar in the courtyard, leaned against it, and pulled out his beloved book, Make Out.

For a while, the only sound in the courtyard was the whistling of arrows cutting through the air.

After emptying his quiver, Kuragami finally paused and spoke.

"Kakashi, about White Fang's case, I'm sorry. This is the best I can do for now."

Kakashi lowered his book upon hearing this, his expression turning serious.

"For that... Thank you. It's more than enough."

Lately, the village had launched a campaign promoting the will of fire. Throughout the campaign, his father, Sakumo Hatake, was repeatedly cited as a model of a true ninja who upheld the will of fire. Many younger generations in the village only now learned that such a hero had once existed.

"Want to give it a try?"

Kuragami smiled, offering Kakashi his longbow.

"A bow, huh? I'm not really good with these."

Kakashi declined. "Besides, for a ninja, shuriken seems like a more fitting weapon, don't you think?"

"Shuriken?"

Kuragami chuckled.

With a swift motion of his right hand across his ninja pouch, four black streaks shot out. They clashed in midair before curving unpredictably toward the target fifty meters away, each one striking the center.

"The Uchiha Clan's shuriken technique is truly impressive."

Kakashi remarked in admiration.

"It's nothing special, just practice."

Kuragami replied casually as he wiped his hands and picked up his bow again.

"But Kakashi, whether it's a bow or a shuriken, both were forged for the same purpose: to kill."

He shot another arrow and hit the center once again.

"But personally, I prefer the bow."

Kakashi looked puzzled. Wasn't the bow an outdated weapon used only by samurai? Compared to the convenience of shuriken, a bow seemed inefficient.

"Shuriken may be easy to use, but once thrown, you can barely recover even a tenth of them. Even those made of the finest steel are ultimately disposable."

"But a bow is different. As long as the bow remains intact, arrows can always be replenished."

"And most importantly, the arrow's path is always determined by the bow."

With a sharp sound, another arrow flew out, shattering the shuriken embedded in the target.

Kakashi pondered Kuragami's words.

"So, what do you say, Kakashi? Want to give it a shot?" Kuragami turned to him with a smile.

"Alright... I'll give it a try."

Kakashi hesitated briefly, then nodded.

"Sister Keiko, bring a bow for Kakashi."

Kuragami called toward the courtyard gate.

Before long, Keiko Uchiha returned, holding a longbow in both hands and respectfully presented it to Kakashi.

Kakashi examined the bow curiously; it felt unfamiliar in his hands.

Although the Hatake clan had once been a samurai clan, by his father's generation, they had fully transitioned into ninja. While they still specialized in Kenjutsu, bows had long been abandoned.

After nocking an arrow into the bowstring, Kakashi clumsily drew the bow, aiming at the target fifty meters away.

"Steady your stance."

Kuragami's voice guided him. "Focus your mind and connect your intent with the target. The arrow should be released only after your will has already reached its mark."

Kakashi adjusted his posture awkwardly, trying to follow Kuragami's instructions, his eyes locked on the target.

Yet, despite his concentration, he hesitated for a long moment without releasing the arrow.

"Kakashi, calm your mind."

Kuragami noticed Kakashi's problem and gently reminded him.

Kakashi took a deep breath to calm his slightly restless heart and then shot out an arrow.

As it cut through the air, Kakashi could already tell he had missed. A faint look of disappointment crossed his face.

But just then…

Whoosh!

The sound of a second bowstring echoed beside him.

Kakashi turned his head in surprise to see Kuragami's bowstring still vibrating.

In midair, another arrow had been loosed, one that had been fired after his own yet was traveling faster.

It caught up to his arrow, colliding with it in mid-flight, and unbelievably, the two arrows realigned and flew together straight into the bullseye.

Thud! Thud!

Both arrows struck the target one after the other.

Kakashi turned to Kuragami in shock, only to meet Kuragami's meaningful smile.
