----------
South of the city, surrounded by mountains, Marcus walked to an artificially dug cave entrance.
From its appearance, it looked like nothing more than a cave...
But in reality, this was the unique Oreburgh Gym.
"Excuse me, is anyone there?" Marcus called out from outside the door. It was dark inside, and it looked like no one was there.
"This blockhead, doesn't he know Roark is a miner? Unless there's an appointment, he's will be digging in the Oreburgh Coal Mine." Behind a large rock not far away, Whitney pouted.
Mary rolled her eyes beside her: "So you absolutely had to go to that coal pit just to find the Gym Leader for Marcus?"
Whitney nodded: "Yeah, otherwise Marcus would have to make an extra trip."
"???" Mary's blood rushed up: "So you could bear to let your best friend get covered in coal dust?"
Seeing her aggressive look, Whitney weakly replied: "Didn't you say you were a guide dog...?"
"??" Mary was dumbfounded: "I...!!!"
"Sorry, sorry, I accidentally took it seriously~"
Mary: #%...&*¥%
...
Marcus saw that no one was at the Gym door and was about to leave when a clear voice came from behind him: "Are you here to challenge the Gym?"
Marcus turned around and saw a young man carrying a shovel and wearing mining clothes standing there.
"Uh... yes."
"Sorry, I usually help out at the mine, so I'm a bit late. Come with me!" Roark took out a key and opened the main door.
Marcus followed him into the 'cave'. Upon opening the door, there was a huge battle arena with many rocks scattered around, a typical Rock-type field.
Roark glanced at the Buneary and Smoliv in Marcus's arms and said: "Looking at you, you seem like a new Trainer, right? The Gym rule is 3v3, can you do that?"
Marcus was startled, and scratched his head awkwardly: "I only have two for now..."
"Hmm?" Roark glanced at the worn Poke Ball on his waist: "Then I'm afraid you'll need to accumulate more. Until..."
Before Roark finished speaking, he was interrupted by Marcus: "Um... I was wondering, is 2v3 okay?"
Marcus slightly raised his head, revealing a confident smile.
"Why doesn't he use Miltank to challenge the Gym?" In the corner of the Gym, Mary whispered.
Whitney, standing beside her, looked at the young man in the arena, tilted her head slightly, and the corners of her sweet mouth curled up: "You wouldn't understand..."
"Clang..." Mary flicked Whitney's forehead: "If you bully me again, I'll leave you here alone! Hmph..."
"Hiss... Ow, ow, ow!" Whitney covered her head, looking wronged. Without retorting, she turned her gaze towards the arena.
"It's possible, but it might be difficult to get the badge this way."
Marcus smiled slightly: "I have confidence in my partners."
"Alright then." Roark nodded in agreement.
A moment later, both sides stood at the edge of the arena.
At Roark's notification, the Referee rushed over from outside the door.
"The battle rules are 2v3. Only the Challenger can switch their Pokemon. The battle ends when all of one side's Pokemon are unable to battle! Now, Marcus of Goldenrod City challenges Oreburgh Gym Leader Roark. The Challenger goes first. Let the battle begin!"
"Buneary, prepare for battle!" "Go, Geodude!"
[Geodude Lv. 20 (Intermediate)]
Seeing the level, Marcus knew that Roark was specifically accommodating his status as a new Trainer.
Without any hesitation, Marcus waved his hand and ordered: "Buneary, use Baby-Doll Eyes!"
Roark raised an eyebrow: "Use Rollout after using Defense Curl!"
Baby-Doll Eyes, a status move leaning towards psychological attack, is difficult to dodge at low levels, so he simply chose a combination move for a strong offense.
Seeing Geodude turn into a rolling rock and charge aggressively, Marcus wasn't flustered at all: "Hide behind the rock."
Buneary leaped behind the rock. Geodude had to change the direction of its Rollout, thus ending the Rollout state.
Marcus smiled slightly. Having fed Miltank for a long time, he knew Rollout very well.
"Continue, use Baby-Doll Eyes!"
"Buneary~!" Buneary threw out another shower of hearts. Geodude glowed with the light of decreasing attack.
Seeing this, Roark reluctantly ordered: "Geodude, use Stealth Rock!"
Stealth Rock: Scatters sharp rocks on the opponent's field. Each time the opponent switches Pokemon, they will be damaged by the rocks and lose HP.
After two Baby-Doll Eyes attacks, Geodude's attack dropped by 2 stages. It had basically lost most of its offensive capability and could only perform supporting functions.
A smile appeared in Marcus's eyes. Honestly, the rule that the Gym Leader cannot switch Pokemon was too easy to exploit for him, the Master of Underhanded Tactics...
The physical attacker Geodude was basically crippled after being hit by Baby-Doll Eyes twice. The three moves it used also posed no threat to Smoliv in the back.
If Marcus were Roark, he wouldn't want to play anymore at this point...
"I remember... Self-Destruct is learned at Lv. 24?" Marcus muttered softly, slightly suppressing the idea of switching.
In official battles, to train himself, he generally wouldn't use the System's function to check the opponent's move pool.
After all, if his goal was to become a Normal-type Master, the move pool of opponents in peak battles would definitely be comprehensive.
"Let's wait a bit longer..." Marcus thought to himself.
To ensure victory, he needed to be a bit more steady (cowardly)...
"Buneary, use Mimic!"
The little rabbit concentrated on the spot. Pieces of Stealth Rock also floated up, then concealed themselves on Roark's side of the field.
"Geodude, use Stomp!"
Stomp: A Ground-type move that attacks the opponent by heavily stomping the ground. If it hits, it lowers the opponent's speed by 1 stage.
"Ensuring accuracy by slowing down, and then stacking Rollout's power... A good tactic," Marcus nodded.
Rollout's effect is that its power continuously increases with each hit.
From Roark's perspective, this might indeed cause Buneary to lose a lot of HP when he can't switch Pokemon.
However...
Marcus's mouth curved up: "Ignore it, use Rain Dance!"
Geodude punched the ground. A slight tremor spread to Buneary's feet, but it didn't seem to cause any effective damage...
"...." Roark was extremely frustrated. Being lowered by 2 stages in physical attack was sickening for anyone...
The problem was that the opponent could clearly finish off Geodude long ago, but they deliberately dragged it out, giving him a feeling of having strength but nowhere to use it.
Although its proficiency wasn't high yet, under the little rabbit's focused Rain Dance, a light drizzle still began to fall in the outdoor arena.
"Geodude, Defense Curl + Rollout!" Roark wiped the fine sweat from his forehead.
The opponent's tactic gave him a strange pressure...
Clearly, he had the advantage in HP and the lead in Pokemon count, but it just felt not good.
"Come back, Buneary!" Marcus recalled the little rabbit, then threw out the second Poke Ball: "Smoliv, use Growth!"
"Huh?!" Seeing the opponent stubbornly enduring Stealth Rock and Rollout to use Growth, Roark thought it was bad, but it was already too late...
"Smoliv..." Smoliv relied on her strong defense, enduring the pincer attack of Rollout and Stealth Rock. As green light flickered, she glowed with the light of rising both attacks.
Marcus grinned, saying the catchphrase that sentenced opponents to death in his previous life: "So now... the team-sweeping formula is complete!"
