Chapter 3: Chapter 3
The morning sunlight filtered through the trees, illuminating the forest.
A Pidgey perched on a thick branch, having just enjoyed the morning dew, tilted its head downward, hoping to spot a foolish meal wandering into its reach.
Suddenly, a melodious tune echoed through the woods, growing louder as it approached. The Pidgey cocked its head toward the sound and saw a young boy with a massive backpack humming a tune as he walked leisurely. Beside him, a Poochyena trotted happily, circling around the boy.
Kazuki raised his head, shielding his eyes from the glaring sunlight, and calculated the distance he had already covered. At this pace, he should be able to reach Pewter City before sunset.
His gaze shifted to a large tree on his left, where a Pidgey had been staring at him since earlier. Even after being noticed, the bird showed no fear, as if it were playing the childish game of "who blinks first loses."
This area, connecting Pallet Town and Pewter City, was a common habitat for weaker, young Pokémon like Pidgey. As such, it was an ideal place for novice trainers to practice basic battles and add new members to their teams.
If Kazuki were an ordinary rookie trainer—like Ash, for example—he would probably be trying to catch the little bird in the tree right now. But Kazuki had no such interest. He averted his gaze and crouched down to pat Hei's small head.
Normally, most Pokémon with trainers would spend the majority of their time inside Poké Balls. Not only did this make things more convenient for their trainers, but the specially designed interiors of the balls provided a comfortable environment for the Pokémon.
Hei, however, was an exception. Unlike most Pokémon, it preferred staying close to Kazuki rather than being confined to a small ball. Well… since Poochyena weren't particularly large, it didn't cause much trouble, so Kazuki let it be.
The boy and his pokemon continued their journey. After about four or five hours, they came across an uneven cliff face blocking their path. The cliff was at least two or three stories high, and looking down, Kazuki could see a slow-moving stream below, its depth obscured by the muddy water.
If Kazuki had a larger Pokémon capable of jumping or flying, he could have chosen to leap across, significantly shortening the distance. But as things stood… it was better not to take the risk.
Stepping away from the edge, Kazuki decided to take the long way around the cliff. Not long after, Hei, who had been happily trotting around, suddenly stopped and began sniffing the air intently, as if searching for something.
Seeing this, Kazuki paused for a moment before realizing what was happening. "Hei, did you smell something?"
Hei nodded and quickly darted forward. Kazuki hurried to follow, and as they got closer, he noticed a faint scent of blood carried by the breeze.
Something's not right… Kazuki called out to Hei, wanting to tell Hei to stop.
But before he could say anything, Hei had already halted.
Looking ahead, Kazuki saw a middle-aged man crouched on the ground, whimpering. His right arm was tightly wrapped in blood-stained bandages, and the scent was coming from there.
Was he attacked by a wild Pokémon? Kazuki quickly made the most plausible assumption. Not all Pokémon were gentle and peaceful. There were plenty of cases where aggressive Pokémon attacked humans who accidentally wandered into their territory.
"Hey, kid! Are you a Pokémon trainer?" The man noticed Kazuki's presence and, upon seeing the boy's face, his pale, blood-drained face lit up with hope.
"Uh… is there something I can help with?" Since he had already been spotted, Kazuki couldn't just walk away. He approached and asked.
"As you can see, I was attacked by a very dangerous and ferocious Pokémon. If you're a trainer, could you help capture that thing to prevent it from harming other innocent people?"
A very dangerous and ferocious Pokémon? Kazuki's expression turned subtlety at the man's description. This area was close to both towns, and there were no major transportation routes passing through. To ensure the safety of travelers and townsfolk, the Pokémon League regularly sent patrols to manage the area.
The strongest Pokémon that could be found here would probably be a Pidgeotto, which Hei wouldn't even be afraid of. Besides, even if there were some dangerous Pokémon from outside the region, I'm just a kid… Are you seriously asking me to deal with it? Are you out of your mind?
"I'm sorry, sir, but I'm not a Pokémon trainer, and neither is my partner. We're not really suited for battles. Still, thanks for the warning. By the way, do you know what kind of Pokémon attacked you? If you don't know its name, could you describe its basic features?"
"Features? Well, it was silver-white all over. Sorry, it all happened so suddenly, my memory's a bit fuzzy…"
Silver-white… That's way too vague. Without even a basic description of its size, it's impossible to narrow it down. Oh well, it's better than nothing. I'll keep an eye out.
Giving up on trying to figure it out, Kazuki was about to thank the unlucky man again when he saw the man use his remaining left hand to pull his backpack forward and rummage through it.
Soon, he pulled out a few rolls of bandages and a bottle of painkillers, shoving them into Kazuki's arms before the boy could react.
"Here, take these for emergencies. Just be careful out there!"
"No, no! You should keep these. I have my own…" Kazuki quickly tried to refuse, handing the first aid supplies back, but the man adamantly refused to take them back.
Seeing how insistent the man was, Kazuki finally accepted the items with gratitude, stashing them in his backpack. After a brief farewell, he and Hei set off again.
---
After parting ways with the man, the boy and his dog were no longer as relaxed as they had been in the early morning. Both were on high alert, constantly wary of something jumping out from the grass or trees to attack them.
This cautious attitude slowed their progress significantly. By the time the sky turned a deep red, Kazuki still hadn't caught sight of Pewter City, even though he had estimated they would arrive before sunset.
While Kazuki remained skeptical about the man's description of a "dangerous Pokémon," the injuries on the man's arm were undeniable. It was better to be safe than sorry.
"Hei, what's wrong now?" Halfway through their journey, Hei suddenly stopped and assumed an aggressive stance, barking several times at a patch of grass about half a person's height.
Kazuki immediately grew cautious, carefully approaching the grass and gently pushing it aside. The moment he saw the scene before him, he couldn't help but gasp.
Lying haphazardly on the damp ground were over a dozen Rattata. The small purple rodents were all battered and bruised, and the few that were still conscious were too injured to move, whimpering softly.
After a moment of hesitation, Kazuki stepped forward and used his limited knowledge of Pokémon care to examine their wounds. A few minutes later, "Dr. Kazuki" delivered his diagnosis—while the injuries varied in severity, none of the Rattata were in critical condition.
Taking out the bandages from his bag, Kazuki gave them simple first aid. Once again, he silently thanked the unnamed stranger. Without his generous donation, Kazuki's own supply of bandages would have been insufficient.
"Be more careful in the future. Don't pick fights with opponents you can't handle." Pokémon were intelligent creatures, and even though they couldn't speak human language, they understood Kazuki's advice and nodded in acknowledgment.
After dealing with the Rattata's injuries, Kazuki stood up and looked at Hei. Both boy and dog could see the seriousness in each other's eyes.
Rattata might be weak Pokémon, comparable to Pidgey, but there were over a dozen of them lying here. If all of them had been taken down by that mysterious silver-white Pokémon alone, its strength was nothing to scoff at.
"Why do I always get caught up in these situations…" Kazuki sighed, slapping his forehead in frustration. The problem was, he couldn't just stop here. Who knew if that Pokémon would ambush them if they decided to camp for the night?
Gritting his teeth, Kazuki decided to press on. The sooner they reached Pewter City, the sooner they would be safe.
However, as if he had forgotten to check his luck before leaving home, Kazuki's hope of reaching the city without further trouble was dashed.
In an open clearing, he finally encountered the legendary silver-white Pokémon.
"Hei, isn't that… your distant cousin?" Kazuki's face was expressionless as he asked. Hearing this, Hei, who had been on high alert with its fur bristling, tilted its head and let out a confused whine.
Before them stood a half-meter-tall, quadrupedal creature covered in silver-white armor. However, it looked rather disheveled, its shell dull and covered in scratches and cracks, as if it had been struck by sharp objects.
Despite its sorry state, the large blue eyes beneath its helmet-like head gleamed with ferocity, locking onto Kazuki with a mix of wariness and hostility. The boy had no doubt that the creature would attack at any moment.
The moment Kazuki saw the "dangerous Pokémon," he understood why the Rattata had been so thoroughly defeated. The creature before him was an Aron, a Rock/Steel-type Pokémon. Its hard shell was something the Rattata's teeth couldn't possibly penetrate.
But this raised another question in Kazuki's mind: If he remembered correctly, Aron usually lived in mountains or caves, and like Hei, they were native to the Hoenn region. What was it doing in the forests of Kanto? Some kind of invasive species?
