Chapter 17: Chapter 17: Studying Medicine Won't Save the Ninja World
"Whose pretty little kid is this?" Tsunade asked with a faint smile. "Could he be yours, Nonō?"
She paid no mind to Hagawa's staring. He was just a kid. It wasn't worth getting angry over. If it had been Jiraiya, she would have just decked him.
"His name is Hagawa. He's a child from the orphanage," Nonō Yakushi explained softly.
"Hagawa?" Tsunade raised an eyebrow. "Is that the same Hagawa who defeated Asuma?"
Nonō subconsciously glanced at Hagawa. Although Asuma was the Hokage's son, a duel between children was unlikely to cause a huge stir, so she hadn't heard about it.
"I was just lucky," Hagawa said with a humble smile.
(Imagined reaction from Asuma: "AMILUS!")
Surprise appeared on Nonō's face. Now she understood why Hiruzen Sarutobi had snatched Hagawa from Danzo Shimura's grasp. It was indeed worth it. But at the same time, a trace of worry entered her heart. The more outstanding Hagawa became, the more determined Danzo would be to get him.
"Is there a reason you brought this little guy to see me?" Tsunade asked with a chuckle.
"Hagawa is a fan of yours, so he wanted to meet you," Nonō said, patting Hagawa's head.
"You're a genjutsu user. Why are you a fan of mine?" Tsunade asked, her curiosity piqued.
Because I'm a fan of your balls... but he definitely couldn't say that out loud.
Hagawa spoke up: "Because I think medical ninjas are amazing. They can save the dying and heal the injured."
"Is that so?" Tsunade was slightly taken aback. A memory seemed to surface, and she sighed. "Studying medicine won't save the ninja world."
Are you Senju Shuren? Hagawa wanted to roast her but didn't know how.
"Little guy, is there anything else you want to say?" Tsunade stood up and stretched lazily. "It's about time. I have to go see a patient."
Hagawa hesitated for a moment, then shook his head. What could he say? Should he kneel like Lu Bu and ask to be her adoptive son? He was only qualified to exchange a few words with Tsunade because of his connection to Nonō. Although Hagawa wanted to learn medical ninjutsu, asking to be her student right now would be completely tactless.
To make it out here, you need power, you need connections. Right now, he had two options. Either he possessed exceptional Yang Release talent, or he was rich enough to do whatever he wanted and become her creditor. But at the moment, he could do neither.
"Well then, see you next time," Tsunade said with a wave of her hand, turning to leave.
"Matron," Hagawa asked, feigning interest, "does Lady Tsunade usually perform surgeries?"
"She does," Nonō nodded. "But she won't step in for minor injuries."
A thought sparked in Hagawa's mind. It seemed she really didn't have hemophobia. In the original series, Tsunade only developed her fear of blood after witnessing Dan Katō's death. That event hadn't happened in this timeline. The flow of fate had changed. Although he didn't know the reason, he was sure that as he grew stronger, he would uncover the altered secrets of the Sage of Six Paths.
For Hagawa, this was a good thing. With Tsunade staying in Konoha, he just needed to display a talent for Yang Release to attract her attention. If she were wandering around like in the original series, he'd have no chance at all. The reason Hagawa was so set on becoming Tsunade's student wasn't because he was a "fan," but for the sake of survival—to live more safely in Konoha. Hiruzen was paying some attention to him, but it wasn't enough. What if one day Danzo decided to "not follow the warrior's code" and launch a sneak attack? How could he possibly defend himself?
He needed another layer of insurance. Besides Hiruzen, only the Legendary Sannin were unafraid of Danzo. Orochimaru was a dangerous and charming villain. If he became his student, he might just end up as a test subject one day. Jiraiya only took on the Child of the Prophecy, and he already had a student like Minato Namikaze. Comparatively, Tsunade was the best choice. She had a noble status and was all alone.
"Matron, can you teach me medical ninjutsu?" Hagawa asked, looking at Nonō Yakushi.
"Medical ninjutsu?" Nonō looked surprised. Is it because he admires Tsunade?
"You're still young. You should be focusing your energy on learning genjutsu," Nonō advised.
"Genjutsu doesn't require energy," Hagawa said, shaking his head. "I can learn three genjutsu in a single day."
"...?" Nonō was dumbfounded. Is he even human? She knew Hagawa had a great talent for Yin Release, but she never imagined it was to this extent. In that case, his victory over Asuma was completely understandable.
"Becoming a medical ninja isn't as simple as becoming a genjutsu user. Before you can learn medical ninjutsu, you need a vast amount of foundational knowledge," Nonō said, taking out a scroll. "Since you want to learn, then give it a try." Geniuses always get special treatment. If he could learn it, that would be for the best. If not, it was fine too; he could still become a genjutsu user.
"Thank you, Matron!" Hagawa let out a subconscious sigh of relief. This ninja world really was full of good people.
Hagawa opened the scroll, and his eyes fell upon the table of contents. He flipped a few pages and saw it was still the table of contents. Confused, he wondered, Where's the main text?
"This is a list of the medical books you need to study," Nonō explained.
"Huh?" Hagawa looked up instinctively. This isn't one book? It's a list of a whole pile of books? And you call this the basic introduction?
He finally understood the true weight of the saying, "Advise someone to study medicine, and you'll be struck by lightning."
"You can come to the Konoha Hospital to read whenever you have free time, or you can borrow a few books to take with you," Nonō said with a smile, patting his head.
"..."
Tsunade's words from earlier echoed in Hagawa's mind. Studying medicine won't save the ninja world.
Oh well. I'll do it for the children's sake.
Hagawa said goodbye to Nonō, borrowed two medical books, and left the hospital. With so many books to get through, he wasn't in a rush. He would start with the simplest things first.
[E-Rank Talent Trait: Fleet-footed (Not Yet Acquired)]
Activation Condition: Reach the maximum speed of an ordinary Genin.
Current Progress: 30%
The E-Rank Trait [Fleet-footed] was a necessary component for synthesizing the C-Rank Trait [Innate Divine Strength]. Moreover, its activation condition was simple: just run. Because Hagawa had been running consistently for two weeks, his progress was already at 30%. With the stamina recovery effect from his [Robust Physique] Trait, he estimated he could meet the condition very soon.
Hagawa stretched his muscles and prepared to run. The streets were already full of pedestrians, making them unsuitable for running. He thought for a moment, then headed north, arriving at Konoha's Training Ground 4. The training grounds were public.
Hagawa scanned the area and saw a familiar face: Kakashi Hatake. He wasn't practicing ninjutsu or training his body, but was "parrying blades" with a white-haired young man.
Is that Sakumo Hatake? Hagawa mused.
In Konoha, there was actually another ninja who wasn't afraid of Danzo: Sakumo Hatake. At this time, his fame surpassed that of the Legendary Sannin, second only to Hiruzen Sarutobi. He was known throughout the ninja world as Konoha's White Fang. But in another two or three years, he would commit suicide after a failed mission.
Hagawa didn't disturb them and began running laps around the edge of the training ground.
