Chapter 20: Chapter 20: A Thriving Konoha
The physical training was in the afternoon; the morning class was History of Konoha.
"Today's lesson is on the Third Hokage," Eiichiro announced from the podium. "Please listen attentively. This entire chapter is a top priority for the final exams; it's a guaranteed topic."
Hagawa propped his history textbook up on his desk, blocking the line of sight from the front. In his quest to unlock the [Top Student] Trait, he had already mastered most of the content and didn't need to follow the lesson step-by-step. Plus, given his excellent recent performance, even if Eiichiro noticed, he would choose to ignore it.
"The Third Hokage, from the Sarutobi clan, is the current Hokage. Under his leadership, Konoha Village is thriving," Eiichiro said. When he mentioned the Sarutobi clan, his gaze instinctively drifted towards Asuma. Not just him, but most of the other students did the same.
Asuma pouted. Although his relationship with Hiruzen had improved thanks to the genjutsu-breaking lessons, the way others looked at him still annoyed him. He wanted people's first thought of him to be "Asuma Sarutobi," not "the Hokage's son."
"The Third Hokage was the direct disciple of the Second Hokage, Tobirama Senju, and is proficient in all of Konoha's ninjutsu," Eiichiro continued. "He has many titles in the outside world: The Strongest Hokage, The Professor, The God of Shinobi..."
Many students looked on with expressions of admiration and longing.
"You're right, but I forgot the beginning, forgot the middle, and also forgot the end. In short, that's the Strongest Hokage."
Hagawa casually took out a math workbook and started doing problems. Whether he could get first place in the theory exams depended on whether he could solve the math problems.
The morning classes ended, and it was time for the lunch break. Asuma let out a breath. That bad old man is so cunning. The whole chapter was nothing but praise. It's disgusting! When I become Hokage, I'll definitely... double down on it.
Asuma put down his textbook, turned his head, and saw Kurenai running to Hagawa's seat with her bento box. His face immediately stiffened. Damn you, Hagawa, you little brat! I can't take it anymore! I'm gonna explode on him!
"Hagawa," Asuma said, walking up to their desk. "I challenge you to a duel!"
Kurenai subconsciously looked at him, an expression of surprise on her face. In her opinion, Asuma had lost so badly last time that he was no match for Hagawa. If they fought again now, the result would be the same.
"I am not the me I used to be!" Asuma shouted, noticing her expression.
Why are you yelling so loud?
Hagawa thought for a moment and said, "We have a practical combat class in a couple of days." They could fight during class time without wasting any extra time.
"Alright!" Asuma was energized by his agreement and said confidently, "I'll definitely win this time!" In half a month, he had not only learned how to break genjutsu but had also practiced against a genjutsu user. How could he lose? You think you can one-shot me? No way! He would turn the school's training ground into his personal stage, and everyone would stand and cheer for him!
"Good luck," Hagawa said with a smile.
"..." Asuma was a bit choked up. Hagawa's attitude made him seem like the arrogant and domineering one. Just as he was feeling a pang of guilt, he saw Kurenai's reaction.
You're being too baby!
Asuma realized his image in Kurenai's eyes was getting worse and worse. Was Hagawa doing this intentionally or by accident? He gritted his teeth and returned to his seat. No matter how he explained it now, it would be useless. The only way was to defeat him.
"Let's eat," Hagawa said, casually handing Kurenai a pair of chopsticks.
"Are you confident?" Kurenai asked, picking up a piece of fried shrimp. "He's the Hokage's son, after all. He must have figured out a way to deal with genjutsu by now."
"I know," Hagawa nodded. He had decided to win in a different way this time.
"That's good." Kurenai was relieved.
At a nearby desk, Rin Nohara opened three bento boxes. She picked up a pair of chopsticks and handed them to Obito first.
"Thank you, Rin!" Obito said, looking smugly at Kakashi. But he found that Kakashi was looking elsewhere. Obito followed his gaze and saw it was on Hagawa.
He couldn't help but say, "He just got lucky and beat Asuma once." As an Uchiha, he looked down on genjutsu users from the bottom of his heart.
"Can you beat Asuma with just luck?" Kakashi asked in a non-committal tone as he took a pair of chopsticks from Rin.
"Why not?" Obito snorted. "If my jutsu hadn't failed last time, Asuma would have already lost!"
"There are no 'if's for a ninja," Kakashi said bluntly. "A loss is a loss, a win is a win."
"You!" Obito's body trembled with anger.
"Obito," Rin said gently, tugging on his sleeve. "Try the tempura I made. How is it?"
"Anything Rin makes is definitely the best!" Obito immediately said with a goofy grin.
The lunch break ended, and it was time for the physical training session that many dreaded.
"One hundred laps around the training ground, begin!" Eiichiro shouted from the starting line.
The entire class shot forward. Leading the pack was none other than Obito. He accelerated right from the start, taking the lead, not forgetting to look back over his shoulder to try and catch Rin's attention.
"Idiot," Kakashi muttered coolly. Rin could only sigh helplessly. Who sprints right at the beginning of a long run?
Hagawa maintained a steady breath, running at an even pace alongside Kurenai. As time went on, the gap began to show. Obito was the first to run out of stamina, falling to the back of the pack. At the front were Kakashi and Might Guy. Hagawa, Kurenai, and Asuma were in the second echelon.
After ninety laps, the situation changed again. Asuma watched helplessly as Hagawa ran past him. The will to fight was there, but he had no power to turn the tide. His steps were already becoming sloppy.
Kakashi glanced at Hagawa, who had been following him the whole time, and frowned slightly. He clearly remembered that in the last physical training session, Hagawa hadn't even made it into the top ten, let alone second place. Now, he was right on his tail. He could clearly hear Hagawa's breathing. It was a bit ragged, but still orderly.
A serious expression appeared on Kakashi's face as he continued to run.
On the final lap, most of the students had already collapsed from exhaustion, sitting on the ground to rest. The only three still running were Kakashi, Might Guy, and Hagawa.
"What's with this guy?" Kakashi panted, his rhythm now chaotic. Every time he thought Hagawa was about to hit his limit, he always seemed to recover some stamina.
Am I going to lose? Although Kakashi didn't specifically train his body on a daily basis, the intensity of his sword practice was not low. Coupled with his natural talent, his overall physical strength already surpassed most Genin.
Kakashi gritted his teeth, summoned his last bit of strength, and began to accelerate.
"This is youth!" Might Guy's entire body trembled with excitement as he watched the two of them in a heated race.
Hagawa's mouth twitched. But... what a great opportunity! It's time to go!
On the final stretch, he held nothing back and unleashed a final burst of speed
