My Real Job is Spying on Konoha, but I'm Also its Hokage

Chapter 69: Chapter 70: Sakumo Hatake's Gratitude

Saturday.

The moment Haneul opened his door, he was greeted by a cheerful voice. "Haneul! Look!"

Kurenai ran up to him. "Look at what?" Haneul yawned.

Kurenai didn't answer, simply twirling in front of him. Only then did he notice she had changed into a white tracksuit and tied her hair into a high ponytail. She looked valiant and heroic, a different, more energetic style from her usual loose hair.

"Nice, very spirited," Haneul nodded with a smile.

"Mhm!" Kurenai beamed.

"What are you two doing?" Shinku Yuhi asked, walking out of his room with a puzzled look. "Isn't it Saturday? Are you going out?"

"We're going to Uncle Kosuke's place," Kurenai said, her voice serious as she clenched her fist. "I am definitely going to learn Water Style today!"

"Kosuke? Water Style?" Shinku's eyes widened. What is going on? Not only is my daughter leaking family secrets, but she's also made a decision that goes against our ancestors? She's giving up genjutsu?

"It's like this," Haneul explained the situation, omitting the part where he was the one who suggested it. He said that Kosuke, out of respect for Shinku, had offered to teach her.

"I can't believe old brother Kosuke still remembers me," Shinku said, pleased.

Kurenai blinked. She knew Haneul had told a white lie, but she didn't expose him.

"Kurenai," Shinku instructed, "although old brother Kosuke is a Genin, his skills are not to be underestimated. You follow him and learn well." Upon reflection, learning Water Style wasn't a bad idea. After all, genjutsu could always be broken. Kurenai was a girl, so learning taijutsu and kenjutsu like Haneul wasn't very elegant. Water Style was a good choice. Moreover, Shinku knew that Kosuke's Water Style was taught by the Second Mizukage—oh, wait, Hokage. All things considered, it was Kurenai who was getting the better end of the deal.

"Dad, we're leaving!" After breakfast, Kurenai pulled Haneul and ran outside.

"Slow down!" Shinku called after them. "Don't exercise right after eating!"

"We know!" Kurenai called back without turning.

The March sun was perfectly comfortable, not too hot or too cold. The two of them walked hand in hand down the street. Since it was Saturday, there weren't many people, just shopkeepers preparing to open.

"When did a new ramen shop open here?" Kurenai noticed Ichiraku Ramen in the distance.

"We'll come try it after it opens," Haneul said, glancing over and spotting an uncle in a white chef's uniform. It was undoubtedly Teuchi. In the original story, there was one place that was exceptionally safe: Ichiraku Ramen. When Pain's Almighty Push destroyed Konoha, Ichiraku Ramen remained untouched. Many fans joked that Teuchi was secretly Otsutsuki Ichiraku, a hidden powerhouse.

"Okay," Kurenai nodded, a look of anticipation on her face. The point wasn't what they ate, but who they ate with.

They soon arrived at Maruboshi Kosuke's house. "Uncle Kosuke," they greeted in unison.

"Good morning," Kosuke smiled benevolently. He had always been alone, and now with two little ones around, he felt very happy.

After the greetings, it was time for training. Haneul took out his samurai sword and began to grind his progress bar.

"Kurenai, I've taught you the basics of Water Style these past few days," Kosuke said after a moment's thought. "Today, we'll learn Water Style: Water Trumpet. It's a basic water jutsu, not too difficult."

"Mhm!" Kurenai nodded eagerly.

"The power of this jutsu depends on your chakra output," Kosuke explained. He formed hand seals and spat out a wave of water, not very large, about the size of an arm. Then, he performed it again, and this time, it was like a river.

"So cool!" Kurenai couldn't help but exclaim. "This feels way more useful than genjutsu!"

Haneul's lip twitched. It was a good thing Shinku wasn't here, or his daughter might have gotten a scolding. Though he probably wouldn't hit his daughter, he would likely be fuming. Putting aside the truly overpowered abilities, genjutsu was not inferior to Water Style. Kurenai was probably referring to the visual impact; Water Style was more visually impressive.

Haneul pushed those thoughts aside and continued his training.

Outside the Hokage's Office.

Sakumo Hatake hesitated for a few seconds before raising his hand to knock. "Come in," Hiruzen's voice sounded from within.

"Lord Hokage," Sakumo said, opening the door and stepping inside.

"Ah, Sakumo," Hiruzen said with a smile. "What can I do for you?"

"I came to thank you regarding the rumors," Sakumo said with a slight bow. He had, of course, heard the gossip about him. But he had always followed his own ninja way, so he paid them no mind. Then, two days ago, he noticed all the rumors had suddenly vanished. There were only a handful of people in Konoha capable of such a feat, the most likely being the Third Hokage. After guessing this, Sakumo felt a sense of relief. In his eyes, Hiruzen represented the Will of Fire. If he acknowledged him, it meant he hadn't done anything wrong.

"It was Tsunade who requested it," Hiruzen said with a smile.

"Tsunade?" Sakumo was stunned. That was something he hadn't expected. Although Tsunade was part of Konoha's leadership, she wasn't like Danzo, involving herself in everything.

"As it happens, Tsunade is at the Mission Assignment Desk right now. You can go find her," Hiruzen said casually, picking up his pipe.

"Thank you, Lord Hokage," Sakumo said, bowing again before leaving the office.

Hiruzen watched him go, taking a puff from his pipe. He knew Sakumo well. If Tsunade had done him a favor and also wanted to compete for the Hokage position, he would likely give up his own candidacy and even support her.

Mission Assignment Desk.

After careful selection, Tsunade had finally chosen Haneul's first mission: to rendezvous with a Konoha intelligence operative in the Land of Water. The mission was B-Rank, meaning they would encounter ninja, but no Jonin, at most Chunin. Besides the appropriate difficulty, Tsunade's most important consideration was to show Haneul the cruelty of the ninja world, and the Land of Water and the Hidden Mist Village were perfect teaching materials.

Just then, a familiar figure came into view. "Tsunade," Sakumo walked up to her and said directly, "Thank you for your help with the rumors."

Tsunade raised an eyebrow. She quickly guessed Hiruzen's intentions. "It was Haneul who asked me," Tsunade said with a smile, not taking credit. "If you want to thank someone, thank that little brat."

Sakumo was taken aback. How did Haneul get involved in this? He was familiar with him because of Kakashi, but Haneul was still a child. For him to be involved in something like this seemed incredible.

"In any case, I still have to thank you," Sakumo said with a slight bow.
