My System has a Glitch

Chapter 21: Divine???

William didn't expect he'd break out of the fog so soon,it was all so dense that it felt like he was constantly running towards a hundred foot white fence.

When he stepped out of the fog it was all so sudden, like he had been transported to a different world entirely.

But they was no time to lose focus, as far a he could see they wasn't a single blade of grass in sight as the whole floor was covered with snakes

Thousands and thousands, even millions of them, all twisting and crawling into each other. William felt a crawling sensation on his back and he gasped as he saw some of them coming after him.

He looked around and on one of the trees he spotted a red rope ladder lying against the body of the tree and without thinking it through, he rushed after it and began climbing.

Through the corner of his eye he caught a glimpse of the red gases as it broke through the fog.

"Damn, why won't you leave me alone? I'm a sitting duck here!"

He realized he couldn't move away from the gases, at least not while he was moving upwards on the tree.

He didn't notice at the time but things were getting much worse as the snakes were climbing up the rope ladder.

William ran out of ladder and climbed onto a branch of the tree. Then he saw them, red black, green snake crawling up the ladder to get on to him.

He could see the red gases stretching towards him look like a poisoned hand reaching out to touch him. He quickly looked around to get a proper view of the place.

'That bastard, he didn't tell us we had to walk through the trees. Wait… Damn it, he did.'

Now William could see he had no choice in the matter, to get around he had to move between the trees. trees were connected to each other via rope ladders sprawled across long and short distances like they were unstable rope bridges with no hand lines to hold unto.

William looked down into the sea of snakes below and he saw green, blue and red track suits, all the remains of people he guessed couldn't hang on to unstable ladders for long. The green tracksuit reminded him of the old man.

He pushed the thought away and focused. The body of the tree under his feet seemed quite moist and mushy.

'It'll be very easy to slip on these trees."

The red gases were almost swirling around him now and he knew he needed to make his move before it made him dizzy or paralyzed.

The only leader leading away from the tree was a red one and worse it was tied onto two branches he wouldn't trust on a good day and even worse it was hung just over his head.

He could either climb up the tree and use the ladder the proper way, lying on it while pulling his whole body forwards one bar at a time or he grabbed onto the ladder from underneath and struggled against gravity while he made his way to the end of it.

He had no time, the snakes were on his hill and the red gas was starting to wrap around.

"Well, I've done harder things than this," he said to himself trying to calm his shaking hands.

It did help a bit so he grabbed onto the first bar and threw his hand towards the next bar.

As he took his feet off the tree and thrust his whole weight on the ropes, the ladder stretched downwards like it was about to snap.

'Just do this one for me God, I know I've been a sinner.'

In his heart William felt God had no ear for him after all he had stolen many religious artifacts.

'This may be my punishment,' he thought.

He swung back and forth but didn't have time to be scared. Instead he swallowed his fears and grabbed onto the next bar and then the next.

He didn't know that at the last moment the snakes had jumped in after him but he had taken himself out of their reach as he grabbed onto the next bar.

Suddenly he felt something coiling around his foot, he paused for a moment dreading what he might find.

'No it couldn't be,' he thought. 'Have I been bitten.'

He looked down and saw a red snake struggling with his foot, he yelled and kicked the snake with his other foot but it didn't die.

He glanced back and saw the red gas behind leaving him no choice but to continue moving with a snake still struggling with his foot.

He tried kicking it again but still it didn't fall off. Suddenly the bridge dipped and dragged down, bringing him closer and closer to the pool of snakes.

He could hear them hissing like they were all pressed against his ears. Hissing and slithering like a symphony of chaos but it was about to get much worse.

There was a bit of information on the encyclopedia that he had read but forgotten. Put simply, blue ladders, good and red ladders, bad.

It wasn't that the red rope ladders couldn't hold his weight or wouldn't let him cross but the red ladders weren't snake repellant and he already had a couple of snakes on his tail.

William continued moving but he still couldn't tell the hissing of the snakes crawling on the rope apart from those I'm the pool.

With his back turned they were practically invisible to him but lucky for him he was nearing the end of the rope and was about to get on a new tree.

The snake on his foot tightened its grip around his ankle and he kicked at it.

He looked down and saw its mouth wrapped around the bottom of his track shoes and he realized its fangs were embedded in the sole of his shoe.

'Shit if its fangs hit me, I'll be done for. I've got to kill it now.'

William stopped moving forward so he could kick the snake properly but he had no idea he had made a grave mistake.

He began kicking the snake and just about when he had stomped it to death, he felt a sharp pain in his hand and he instinctively let go of the rope.

"Damn it!"

William screamed as he fell and as he fell, he saw a black snake still clinging to him with its fangs buried in his hand.

"Damn you, I see why he cursed you to crawl."

He panicked as he hit a branch that spun him around and almost knocked him unconscious as he fell towards the pool of snakes.

Not willing to give in, William got a glimpse of something green, he had seen many of them around so he knew for sure that it was a vine.

"A vine!" he screamed as he reached out for it but he was wrong. He grabbed onto the vine and stopped himself from falling but before he could catch his breath the vine pulled him upwards.
