Chapter 80: Dungeon break [2]
The dragons formed ranks, their presence creating a barrier between the dungeon creatures and the camp.
Nova stood beside Asher, dropping the blanket on the log they had been sitting on. "Orders?" she asked, now shifting to her partial form.
Her bow and arrow materialized beside her, but a frown appeared on her face when she saw Zain smirking at her. "Use another form and wipe that stupid look off your face."
Zain shook his head. "I like that we match," he said and turned to Asher. "Your orders, Master?"
"Stay close," he said, his tone leaving no room for argument. "Fight together."
The first wave of creatures reached the defensive line. The dragons met them head-on, claws and weapons clashing. Roars and screams filled the night as the battle commenced.
Cinder moved with agility. Despite the revealing cloth she wore, she wielded the knives in her hand like actual swords, and she wasn't even good with them.
The others insisted on fighting because... as Tay said, "He was busy training with a being impossible to kill, so it was only right he let them test their strength as well."
Sinnett phased through the trees, yawning and dragging his feet till he arrived at the entrance of the dungeon.
He stared at the gate for close to thirty seconds, bobbing his head back and forth until an insect-type beast stuck its head out.
It tilted its head at the sight of Sinnett and wondered why he wasn't moving, until a loc coiled around the head and pulled it apart, causing the creature to disintegrate.
"I really did not sign up for this at all," Sinnett murmured as he lowered his gaze to his palm. An eye appeared there, his silver iris staring back at him with that sinister look.
Then suddenly, eyes started to appear on the trees, ground, the tents, and even on the remains of the wood used for the fire.
Asher, who noticed this, raised his hand to his mouth to stop himself from throwing up, then he called out, "Sinnett, what are you doing?"
Sinnett waved and called Zero over, who obeyed, leaving the creature she was busy with.
He turned to her when she had arrived and exhaled. "You can still burn stuff, right?" She nodded. "Can you make it focus on flesh and not plants or the grass?"
She nodded again, then he smiled. "Tell Asher this... He and Tay should get to higher ground, and you and Cinder should get ready to burn every living thing on this ground from point A to B. Asher should give you a good location.
"Tell him to ask Zain to go into the dungeon and wipe out every single creature inside, and Nova should kill any other living thing that did not get burnt... understood?"
She nodded and vanished almost immediately. Sinnett smiled satisfactorily. He controlled his locs to pull him up on a tree, where he sat, overlooking the ground.
Zain and Nova fought back-to-back, their synergy evident as they covered each other's blind spots. The banished four proved their worth, their power undeniable as they tore through the enemy ranks, despite their numbers.
Tay and Cinder fought side by side, their movements synchronized like they had been training together for years.
He wielded his blade with deadly precision, as well as using bullets to penetrate skulls from the pistol he had, while she unleashed bursts of energy, each strike finding its mark.
Despite their combined strength, the numbers seemed endless. For every creature they felled, two more took its place.
"Tay, fall back," Asher called out, parrying an attack, as soon as Zero relayed the message to him. Tay instantly leaped into the air and landed on a branch in a tree near Asher.
"What's the matter?" he asked, gunning down a wolf that tried to climb up the tree.
"Go higher. We've got a plan," he said and stepped forward. "Guys, listen up... Cinder, Zero, stay together and get ready to burn everything on sight, except the trees, grass, and the tent."
"Target only flesh and bone. Zain, go into the gate and wipe out anything that moves."
"Return before it closes or tell Sinnett if anything goes wrong. Nova, go above ground and scan the area for anything still moving that wasn't burnt, unless it looks like a regular animal. That said, trust none."
"The rest of you did well," he said and snapped his fingers, causing all his soldiers to vanish except the cursed four, who followed Zain closely.
Asher tried to stop them by calling them back, but Zero said,
"Master, let them be. They were just raised and need to hone their skills."
He understood but was worried they'd be in Zain's way.
Asher gave Cinder and Zero the signal to begin, the points to stand in, then he yelled out,
"Now!"
Cinder and Zero sprang into motion. Zero ignited the air with a wave of her hand, flames erupting in a sweeping arc from the point Asher marked with a flick of his dagger.
Cinder followed, guiding the fire with careful precision. The flames licked across the battlefield in a growing wave, unnaturally controlled, sparing the trees and tents but devouring flesh and bone ruthlessly.
Screeches of agony echoed as the dungeon creatures were engulfed. The heat was immense, the night now brightened with burning enemies and energy.
Above, Nova soared in her partial form, scanning from above with hawk-like precision.
Any creature that escaped the inferno met her arrows. Her eyes glowed with focus, and her expression was unreadable as she cut down anything that dared linger.
Below, Zain had already entered the dungeon with the banished four trailing behind.
The inside was a grotesque hive of twisting creatures pulsing with dark mana. Creatures skittered across walls, ceiling, and floors. All of them halted when they sensed him.
But Zain didn't hesitate. He moved, using the dagger he had stolen from Tay to cut down anything that came near him.
The banished four followed his rhythm, learning quickly, adjusting their forms mid-battle to match his efficiency.
Blood and ichor stained the dungeon halls, and the more the beasts came, the further Zain moved into its heart.
Outside, Tay and Asher stood on a thick branch, wind rushing past as flames roared beneath them. Tay leaned slightly, watching the field.
"Guess we missed the fun part," he muttered, sheathing his blade.
"Not yet," Asher replied, narrowing his eyes at the burning field. "Zain's still in there. And if this dungeon spawned without warning, there's more going on."
Tay tilted his head. "A planned breach?"
"Possibly," Asher said. His hand tightened around the hilt of his blade. "Or someone wanted to test us. Maybe attack us."
