My Wife is the World’s Greatest Divine Martial General

28: To Build or Not to Build

After letting the Gu siblings take a look at the silver, Gu Yu pretended to put it into his bosom while actually slipping it into his space. Then he decided to share his idea about building a house.

Gu Yu wasn’t purely a person from ancient times, nor did he hold the traditional belief that the man of the house had the final say on everything. Although sometimes he wanted Gu Mengyao to listen to him, he wasn’t the type who liked to force others.

Regarding building a house, although Gu Yu was concerned about the cold winter, the dilapidated state of their home, and worried the three of them might get frostbite, he felt it would be disrespectful to build a house without notifying the siblings.

After all, the three of them were living together now, not just Gu Yu alone.

“Mengyao, now that we have money, I’m thinking of asking the village head tomorrow to allocate some land so we can build a house.”

“Build a house? Won’t that attract too much attention?”

“Does attracting attention mean we shouldn’t build? Our family’s situation isn’t at a point where we should be worrying about such things. Even before I earned money, I was thinking about building a house; otherwise, when winter comes, we might not freeze to death, but we’d certainly get frostbite.”

After Gu Yu expressed his idea about building a house, Gu Mengyao didn’t seem unwilling, but from her words, she clearly didn’t want to be too high-profile.

However, Gu Yu didn’t see it that way.

If the wild boar Gu Mengyao had caught had been sold by Wu Changlin, their family would probably have continued living quietly as before. But now they had directly rejected Wu Changlin, and their relationship with him had even dropped to a freezing point.

Just from Wu Changlin’s previous words, it was clear he was petty.

Now, regardless of how much money Gu Yu made from selling the wild boar, Wu Changlin would create obstacles behind their backs, wanting to make life difficult for their family.

Therefore, there was no need to hide or cover anything up.

“Sister, Brother-in-law is right. Why should we care so much about others when living our own lives! I think building a house is a good idea. Our current house leaks wind everywhere, and I’m always awakened by the cold at night.”

“Qingheng is right. We don’t need to be concerned about others’ opinions. This money wasn’t stolen or robbed; we can spend it with confidence.”

Compared to Gu Mengyao, her younger brother was more open-minded, and his words were exactly what Gu Yu wanted to hear.

Gu Mengyao was overly concerned, which made her hesitate, while Gu Qingheng didn’t worry about such things.

In his eyes, only by building a house would they prevent others from gossiping behind their backs.

Before the Gu family patriarch died, they had lived quite well—a harmonious and happy family life that was envied by many in the village! After all, the man was good at hunting and making money, the woman was beautiful and good at managing the household, plus a pair of clever and adorable children—truly the envy of others.

But after the Gu patriarch died in the mountains, their family gradually became poor.

There was no help for it—the situation of orphans and a widow in the Gu family indeed couldn’t get much better.

After the widow also passed away from depression, life became even more difficult for the Gu siblings.

Although there were no harsh elders mistreating them, the two children lacked survival skills and could only accept charity from various families to barely survive.

However, some people who had previously envied the Gu family now spoke ill of the Gu siblings.

It was nothing more than saying the children had “hard fate” that harmed their parents, that the Gu patriarch’s death was unjust, and that getting close to them would bring disaster to one’s family… Since the Gu couple was dead, there was no one to refute these claims.

The originally kind-hearted villagers gradually distanced themselves from the siblings because of these words, and ultimately, in desperation, Gu Mengyao picked up a bow and went to the mountains.

So even if just to prove a point, Gu Qingheng wanted their family to build a house—preferably a grand one—to make those people die of envy.

With her younger brother’s support, Gu Yu felt more confident.

It wasn’t that Gu Yu wanted to be so conspicuous now that he was making money, but the ox cart owner he had found in the village today had been eyeing the wild boar with gleaming eyes the whole way. By tomorrow, probably the entire village would know that Gu Yu had sold a wild boar.

Selling a home-raised fat pig weighing several hundred jin could fetch over ten taels of silver, let alone a wild boar.

Gu Yu could already imagine the “grand occasion” at their home tomorrow—it would be extremely troublesome.

Fortunately, the head of the household now was Gu Mengyao. The Gu family had no other relatives in Yang Village, and Gu Yu was just a son-in-law who had married into the family. Although he had high status at home, in the villagers’ eyes, he was just a pretty boy living off a woman.

In an era where men were superior to women, being regarded this way was unbearable for any man in the village.

But this didn’t include Gu Yu.

Gu Yu had been frustrated before because he didn’t want Gu Mengyao to risk danger by hunting in the mountains. After earning money, plus with Gu Mengyao nursing her injury and unable to go to the mountains, the crisis was resolved, and Gu Yu didn’t care what others said.

After all, even if their lips wore out from talking, Gu Yu wouldn’t lose a piece of flesh.

When they saw his family’s blue brick and tile house, many people would probably be dying of envy.

Gu Yu’s concern at this moment was that once the villagers got news of the pig sale tomorrow, the people from the old Yang household would probably come to interfere.

Fortunately, Gu Yu was no longer the previous Gu Yu. Now, even if people from the old Yang household came, they wouldn’t be able to take advantage.

However, he needed to mention this to Gu Mengyao in advance, to prevent his wife from agreeing to unreasonable demands out of consideration for him.
