61: The Question of Staying or Leaving
The sudden addition of a fox to the household, especially one that was exceptionally intelligent, had thrown the three members of the Gu family into a dilemma.
According to Gu Yu’s thinking, even if this was a female fox, it shouldn’t be allowed to stay by Gu Mengyao’s side.
He could protect his little wife himself, without needing some spirit pet causing trouble.
However, his young brother-in-law Gu Qingheng couldn’t resist the fluffy little fox, and was practically on the verge of throwing himself on the ground in a tantrum saying he wanted it.
Seeing his reddened eyes, Gu Mengyao couldn’t bear it. Though she had originally intended to send the fox away, she now found herself caught between two difficult choices.
In the end, it was Gu Yu who relented, unable to see Gu Mengyao continue to struggle. He agreed to let the little fox stay.
However, though it could remain, Gu Yu had no intention of letting it inside the house.
Later, he would have Gu Qingheng make a nest of straw for it, which could be placed in the courtyard.
At night, it could even stand guard.
The little fox was extremely dissatisfied with this arrangement, but Gu Mengyao nodded directly in agreement.
Being able to keep the little fox was already a very good outcome. Although Gu Mengyao cared about her young brother’s feelings, she couldn’t disregard her husband’s either. So the little fox would have to endure sleeping outside in the courtyard.
Upon seeing Gu Mengyao’s agreement, a smile immediately crept up on Gu Yu’s lips. His eyes were full of smugness as he glanced at the little fox, silently declaring that he was the final winner.
So, if it wanted to stay in this home, it would have to obediently follow the rules.
After receiving Gu Yu’s glance, the little fox understood the meaning contained within. So in the end, it dejectedly allowed Gu Qingheng to carry it away to play elsewhere.
It was quite depressed!
Originally, it had been living perfectly fine in the mountains, but during the day, it had nearly been struck dead by a bolt of lightning, and then was driven here.
Indeed, in its several decades of life, the little fox had never seen lightning chasing after its backside before…
And after arriving at the courtyard and meeting Gu Mengyao, the lightning had stopped appearing, so the little fox guessed that perhaps this was heaven’s intention, to make it stay by this woman’s side.
However, it was only for Gu Mengyao alone.
As for the others, hmph…
This was the little fox’s initial thought, but now it knew that among the three people of the Gu family, the one it couldn’t afford to provoke was Gu Yu.
Wuwuwu…
Regardless of how much the little fox regretted it in its heart, once Gu Yu settled the matter of the fox, he immediately pulled Gu Mengyao aside to tell her what he had just ‘seen’, describing in great detail the scene of Yang Shun and Lin Jiao’e in the water.
When Gu Mengyao heard this news, she was shocked and covered her mouth with her hand, clearly not having expected that these two would be so bold as to do such things in a place where others could be present.
Gu Mengyao was only surprised, but felt no sympathy for the two.
Man proposes, Heaven disposes. Just based on how Yang Shun and Lin Jiao’e had previously tried to scheme against Gu Yu, Gu Mengyao couldn’t raise even a bit of sympathy for them.
Gu Mengyao was not a woman with excessive compassion. Having grown up struggling, she had no spare corner in her heart to sympathize with others.
But…
Although Gu Mengyao also knew that this wasn’t something Gu Yu had actually seen, and he likely played a key role in it, thinking about the outcome of this incident, Gu Mengyao began to worry again.
Previously, she had thought the village was safe, but what if someday a woman took a liking to Gu Yu and knocked him into the water…
It must be said, Gu Mengyao was overthinking.
Even if someone really did knock Gu Yu into the water, he would simply swim away with the current. If a woman fell in right after him, Gu Yu wouldn’t care if she died!
