Chapter 55: Chapter 55: This Person Became a Girl, But She's Not Just a Pretty Face
As the two bickered back and forth, the smell of Chinese cuisine soon wafted out of the kitchen, following the guidance of Sasuke, who was helping Naruto.
Sasuke observed Naruto, whose expression was focused, but his mind kept drifting back to what had happened during class today.
If it weren't for his deliberate effort to comfort Naruto, Sasuke, with the pride of being the sole heir of the Uchiha clan, would never have gone along with Naruto's antics.
What Sasuke didn't know was that Naruto's actions had aligned with his own thoughts.
Over the past few days, Sasuke had been constantly put in a bad situation by Naruto. This morning, Naruto had crossed Sasuke's boundaries repeatedly, and if he didn't find an outlet to vent his frustration soon, Sasuke felt like he might lose his mind.
With Sasuke quietly assisting, soon enough, plates of dishes Sasuke had never seen before were brought to the table.
"Naruto, what's this dish? Why are there leaves in it? And the meat is red—did you add blood or something?"
Naruto almost tripped over his own feet in surprise. "Sasuke, this is crispy braised pork. And these aren't leaves—they're a spice called bay leaves."
"And what's this? It looks like a plate full of chili peppers and some black grains I can't even name," Sasuke asked, puzzled.
The dry-fried chili chicken was served, filling the room with a pungent, spicy scent, along with a cool, numbing sensation that seemed to fill the chest. Sasuke couldn't help but ask, "What's this?"
"This is dry-fried chili chicken. The black grains you're talking about are Sichuan peppercorns. When you eat them, it feels like being shocked—it's a numbing sensation," Naruto explained nonchalantly, making Sasuke feel slightly hesitant.
"Oh, I see."
Soon, steaming bowls of rice were placed on the table, and Naruto and Sasuke sat across from each other.
"Eat while it's hot, Sasuke. It won't taste good once it cools down."
Without waiting for a response, Naruto picked up a piece of the red-braised pork, tender and juicy with a golden-orange hue, and stuffed it into his mouth. The combination with rice sent him to another realm of satisfaction.
This world's culinary culture, compared to that of Naruto's previous life, was far behind in terms of variety and depth.
Ingredients like bay leaves, cinnamon, white cardamom, gardenia, and cloves were once discovered by ancient herbalists and slowly adapted into culinary uses. But in this ninja world, because of the reliance on chakra for healing, no one bothered to deeply research or explore medicinal herbs for food.
The five great nations of the ninja world had only been established for a little over a hundred years, while traditional Chinese medicine had roots tracing back to the ancient Three Sovereigns and Five Emperors era.
Of course, the reason Naruto was able to recreate the perfect red-braised pork in this world was due to the spices he exchanged using the system's search feature. Otherwise, even with Naruto's modern soul, he'd be helpless.
Since Sasuke had never seen this type of cuisine before, she was naturally reluctant. But when she saw Naruto shove rice into his mouth with one hand and grab another piece of pork with the other, she swallowed and finally gave it a try. She hesitated, picking up a small piece and chewing it slowly.
The flavors of an entirely different time and space collided, carrying the essence of five thousand years of Chinese wisdom, sending an explosive wave of taste through Sasuke's senses.
Her large, clear eyes widened in shock as she stared at Naruto, unable to speak.
To her, calling it merely "delicious" was an insult to the dish.
"I told you to eat while it's hot," Naruto urged, continuing to shovel rice into his mouth.
"I know, I know… I... forget it." Sasuke couldn't find the words to compliment the dish properly.
"By the way, Sasuke, how does this braised pork compare to the barbecue from Guoshi Wushuang and Hong Le?"
Since it was his first attempt at making the dish, Naruto felt it was necessary to ask Sasuke, who was from the area.
Sasuke took a deep breath before responding, "All I can say is... comparing them is like comparing heaven and earth. There's no competition whatsoever."
She knew that Naruto had made this meal for her, but she understood the purpose behind it.
"Good to hear. After some time, I'll pass the recipe to Hong Le and Yi Le."
When Sasuke heard this, she couldn't help but worry. "Naruto, if you so easily give away the recipe, aren't you afraid that Yi Le and Hong Le might… betray you?"
Naruto paused mid-bite, his expression turning serious as he looked at Sasuke.
"Can I take that as… you're worried about me? Or that you're thinking about me?"
Sasuke had expected Naruto to consider her concerns, but she never imagined he'd ask so seriously.
"Hmph, who's worried about you? I'm not! You're the worst, Naruto!"
With her face flushed red, Sasuke angrily lowered her head and resumed eating, too embarrassed to look him in the eye.
Naruto chuckled helplessly, silently praising his own wisdom.
"Ah, the old saying is true… A woman's heart is as deep as the sea. Why not admit you care? What's the problem?"
As they continued eating, the plate of red-braised pork soon disappeared.
At that point, Naruto finally put down his chopsticks and reached for another dish piled high with red chili peppers.
"Just more chili peppers? You're just wasting food," Sasuke grumbled.
Naruto had cooked the chili chicken earlier, and Sasuke hadn't seen it because the kitchen had been filled with smoke. She assumed he'd just fried a plate of dry chili peppers.
"Hmph, let's see if you still think that after you try it."
Without further delay, Naruto picked up a small piece of crispy, golden-yellow chicken from the pile of peppers and peppercorns. The sesame seeds, roasted in the high heat, were golden and stuck to the chicken, making it so appetizing that even just looking at it made one's mouth water.
Crunch...
Naruto didn't hesitate, popping the chicken into his mouth.
The extreme spiciness, combined with a numbing sensation, exploded in his mouth.
"Oh my god, this is the taste! Mmm, mmm…"
Seeing how much Naruto enjoyed it, Sasuke couldn't resist trying it herself.
About fifteen minutes later, Sasuke, tears streaming down her face, her mouth agape as she tried to catch her breath, was furiously cleaning the table, glaring at Naruto.
"My mouth is numb! Naruto, why didn't you warn me beforehand? I hate you!"
By then, Naruto had already sat cross-legged on the floor, preparing to gather chakra. But hearing Sasuke's annoyed words, he couldn't help but laugh. "I warned you when you ate the first piece, but you wouldn't listen. Can you really blame me?"
Sasuke's anger flared. Was she mad about the chicken? No, what really pissed her off was that Naruto, knowing she wouldn't be able to stop herself from eating it, had dared to bet with her that whoever lost would have to clean up.
She, Uchiha Sasuke, a genius among the Uchiha clan, had been tricked by Naruto once again—that was what made her so angry.
But in the end, she had lost the bet, so she had no choice but to clean up.
However, not long after, Sasuke walked shyly up to Naruto, her face flushed. "Naruto, is there anything I can do to get rid of the numbness in my mouth and the swelling from the chili?"
Naruto narrowed his eyes as he looked at Sasuke.
Indeed, after eating the chili chicken, Sasuke had gone a little overboard, and now her lips were not only red but slightly swollen.
"Is there any way to help?" Sasuke asked again, clearly concerned.
Naruto seemed to hesitate, his expression pained. "Well, there is a way, but it's troublesome, and it would hurt me a lot."
"Ah, this..." Sasuke bit her lip and then stamped her foot. "If you help me, I'll do your laundry next time. How about that?"
Smack…
Naruto slapped his thigh and grinned. "Deal!"
Sasuke breathed a huge sigh of relief after hearing this.
"Then what should we do?"
But as soon as Naruto spoke his next sentence, Sasuke froze on the spot.
Naruto casually pointed to his own lips and said, "All you need to do is kiss me, transfer the spicy taste back to me, and we're good."
At first, Sasuke thought he was just joking, but then she almost exploded with rage.
"Go as far away as your thoughts can take you! Ugh… so annoying!"
She huffed, stormed back into the kitchen, her face flushed red from embarrassment.
Naruto chuckled inwardly.
"Even if Sasuke's a girl in this time and space, she's still not some brainless flower vase."
