Chapter 29: Chapter 29: Don't Exterminate Them All
In Konoha.
Morning.
"Uncle…"
From the living room behind him, a youthful voice called out. Asuma turned to see three-year-old Konohamaru sitting on the floor, greeting him while clutching a wooden, rounded kunai toy.
He walked over and ruffled Konohamaru's hair.
"It's Uncle."
Exiting his home, Asuma made his way to his favorite breakfast diner.
Even though they had a maid at home who prepared breakfast every day, Asuma was not particularly fond of it; he preferred the cooking of his mother, Biwa.
Sadly, he could no longer have that.
"Hey, good morning, Asuma."
The diner owner recognized him as a regular and directly handed him a prepared breakfast without asking what he wanted.
Asuma returned the greeting with a simple, "Good morning," as he took out some money to pay.
He noticed a familiar figure standing beside him.
Oboro Kanzuki.
What's he doing here...?
Asuma couldn't help but sneak glances at him, occasionally stealing a side-eye.
Oboro was quietly eating a toasted bread and, unexpectedly, turned his head to look at Asuma. Their eyes met, and Asuma chuckled awkwardly.
"Uh… hello."
"Hello," Oboro replied calmly.
"You like this place too?" Asuma attempted to strike up a conversation.
"It's nearby."
"Their miso soup is pretty good."
"Salty."
"Too salty?" the diner owner interjected.
"I think it's fine," Asuma defended.
"That's because Oboro's taste is lighter," the owner joked, and Oboro merely offered a slight acknowledgment.
Asuma observed Oboro's indifferent demeanor and felt somewhat foolish for trying to engage him.
He began to understand why Anko had clashed with someone like him.
"You're Kanzuki Oboro, right?" Asuma spoke again.
"Hmm."
"I'm Sarutobi Asuma."
"Hmm."
"...I heard you're quite capable."
"In what aspect?" Oboro asked, maintaining his calm expression.
"In terms of strength."
"Hmm."
"…"
Asuma found himself at a loss for words as Oboro continued to ignore him.
Would it kill him to say a few more words? Are all these so-called geniuses like this, so aloof?
Finishing his soup, Oboro turned and walked away.
"Thanks for the meal."
Asuma watched his retreating figure, letting out a long sigh.
"Hahahaha," the diner owner chuckled softly beside him.
He rolled his eyes at the owner.
"With Oboro, everyone takes a hit at some point," the owner said merrily.
"Surprisingly, you all don't dislike him." Asuma chuckled.
"That kid was quite the charm when he was young; I don't know what caused him to change so suddenly," the owner sighed.
"Oboro grew up alone, so everyone has been quite tolerant of him."
Asuma was taken aback. "You… don't know about his past?"
"What past?" the owner asked, puzzled.
Asuma thought for a moment, then shook his head nonchalantly, smiling. "It's nothing."
"He comes here for breakfast every day, so if you come a bit earlier, your paths might cross again," the owner suggested.
"He only comes a bit later on weekends."
Asuma didn't say much more, setting down his empty soup bowl.
"Thanks for the meal."
He had no ulterior motives; he merely found Oboro intriguing and wanted to start a conversation.
Although his friends had previously experienced some unpleasantness with him, Asuma felt that they were all from the same village and that it wasn't some severe grudge that couldn't be overlooked.
But it seemed Oboro didn't share that sentiment, so there was no need for Asuma to put his warmth to waste.
Eastern Border of the Land of Fire.
In a forest, a fierce chase erupted as a squad of elite Mist ninjas fled ahead, with Konoha's shinobi hot on their heels.
Shuriken flew through the woods, and various ninjutsu clashed, creating a tense atmosphere where every participant was on high alert.
The Mist ninjas combined forces, unleashing a massive Water Release technique that flooded the area, threatening to submerge the forest.
Konoha's formation was immediately disrupted, and they struggled to maintain their footing on the undulating surface.
The Mist ninjas rejoiced at this and planned to leverage the water's momentum to further suppress them, hoping to annihilate Konoha's forces.
But at that very moment, an eerie silence fell over the remaining mist-nin, their expressions turning to shock as they sensed something terrifying looming around them.
Konoha's shinobi saw their enemy falter and charged forward, ready to execute any potential targets.
At the back of the formation stood Shisui, joined by his team.
"Just as expected of you, Captain."
"Those Mist bastards were frightened silly upon hearing your name."
"Your ability to invoke genjutsu from that position is amazing!" his teammates praised him with looks of admiration and envy.
"Ambushing from a good spot, combined with my unique Sharingan abilities," Shisui replied with a calm smile.
Ordinary Sharingan could only deceive those who made eye contact, leading them into illusion, and it was common knowledge that one should avoid direct gaze at the Sharingan at all costs, adopting tactics of escape or sneaky attacks when outnumbered.
However, Shisui's ocular power could impose genjutsu on individuals within his line of sight directly.
As the watery crisis subsided, only the bodies of the Mist ninjas remained.
"This makes how many squads for these past few days?" Shisui pondered.
"Those Mist ninjas truly never learn. Who knows what their Mizukage is plotting," his comrades remarked as they inspected the bodies.
They retrieved anything deemed useful from the corpses before disposing of them on the spot.
Returning to their base, Shisui was greeted by many, receiving respect and recognition for his achievements.
"Captain Shisui, you have a letter," one of the squad members passed Shisui a letter.
"A letter for me?" Shisui was taken aback.
"It was sent from the village."
The envelope bore no signature, simply stating it was addressed to Uchiha Shisui.
Curious, Shisui opened it, revealing a blank sheet with a drawing of a Sharingan emblazoned upon it.
Tensha Fuuin… who sent this?
After a moment's reflection, Shisui activated his Sharingan.
As his Sharingan perceived the letter again, the content had shifted to read:
"The Mist nin are useful. Don't exterminate them all." — Oboro.
