Chapter 33: Chapter 33: Opportunity
Spring had arrived early, and the temperatures were beginning to warm.
People started shedding their winter coats, donning lighter spring outfits.
Tenten sat at her desk, staring vacantly out the window at the trees that were beginning to sprout new buds.
The classroom was filled with chatter and laughter as groups of students gathered together, engaging in lively conversations.
"Tenten, what are you daydreaming about?" her desk mate playfully nudged her.
"Ah, nothing," Tenten smiled, snapping back to reality.
Oboro has been so busy lately; he's not been home after school to keep me company…
She sighed inwardly.
It had been a while since she had gone shopping or enjoyed a meal out with Oboro, leaving her feeling a bit downcast.
"Oh, are you thinking about that guy?" her desk mate teased with a knowing grin.
The girls around them giggled in amusement.
What's this nonsense…
Tenten felt bewildered as she looked again out the window and noticed a black-haired boy standing out among the younger students on the playground.
That must be… Uchiha Sasuke.
Though he was a year below them, he was quite handsome and was popular among the girls. Tenten had heard that some girls from her class had confessed to him, only to be turned down.
He's probably just a guy like Neji—handsome, skilled, but hard to approach.
"Of course Neji is better," a girl chimed in. "We're at least a year ahead of him."
"I think Sasuke is cuter," another challenged.
"It's obviously Neji!"
The girls began bickering, but Tenten had no interest in getting involved in their antics; she felt they were merely being noisy.
A bunch of kids who don't understand what it means to like someone.
She thought with disdain.
After School.
Tenten returned home alone and noticed someone coming back to Oboro's house across the street, where the window was open.
Without returning to her own home, she hurriedly made her way to Oboro's door and knocked.
"Oboro!"
When the door opened, Oboro looked calm and simply cast a glance at her before turning back into the house.
"Why are you back so early?" Tenten followed him inside and saw the shoes he had carelessly discarded on the floor. She bent down to put them back in order.
"Finished the mission early," Oboro replied as he lay back on his bed.
Seeing him like this made Tenten hold back the words she had wanted to say about going out together.
"Are you tired?"
No response. Tenten decided not to push it. Instead, she lay down beside him, propping herself up to quietly watch him.
With the windows wide open, a cool breeze blew in, and the distinctive scent of laundry soap wafted through the room. His ANBU gear was strewn carelessly to one side, while the mask and blades were casually placed on the desk.
The sheets had just been changed, still faintly smelling of laundry soap, the same scent she associated with Oboro.
The clothes she had borrowed last time hadn't been returned but hung neatly in her own wardrobe.
As Tenten lost herself in watching Oboro's side profile, a sudden chill from the breeze made her shiver.
Oboro glanced at her and, using his foot, pulled the covers up over her.
"Isn't it time for dinner? Aren't you heading back?" he asked.
Tenten grabbed the blanket, covering half of her face. "I don't want to go home for dinner. Oboro, let's go eat out."
"That's your mother's cooking, after all."
"Oh, and what about you?"
"I'm not hungry."
Tenten lifted her head, puffing out her cheeks as she looked at him. "No way!"
"Why don't you just come eat at my house?" she urged.
"I'm not going."
Frustrated, Tenten sat up from the bed, tugging at Oboro's arm.
"Oboro!"
"I've told you I'm not hungry." He pressed his hand down gently on Tenten's head.
"I'm tired and need to sleep," he added.
Unable to move him, Tenten pouted helplessly, arms crossed as she glared at him.
"I'm done with you!" she declared, swatting his hand off her head before jumping off the bed.
She made her way to the door and noticed the shoes she had just arranged earlier. Annoyed, she kicked them aside.
Bang!
She slammed the door shut behind her.
"Such a heartless guy, and here I was sincerely inviting you," a teasing voice suddenly spoke from the quiet room.
Oboro turned to see a familiar figure perched at the window.
"Playing the compassionate big brother isn't hard, is it?" Shisui leaped through the window, landing gracefully on a chair.
Oboro regarded him expressionlessly.
"Why do you look at me like that?" Shisui asked innocently.
"I just returned to the village, and you're the first person I came to see," he said with a grin.
Oboro, uninterested in idle chatter, straightaway asked, "How's it going with the Mist?"
"They're playing nice for now," Shisui replied with a smirk.
"I thought I told you not to get too ruthless?" Oboro pressed.
"That's part of my mission." Shisui shrugged. "Those guys are the enemy."
Oboro's gaze hardened at his response.
"Relax; I didn't wipe them all out," Shisui said, knowing the weight of Oboro's stare.
"But the next few days should see a decent lull. However…"
"You should at least tell me why you're doing this, considering the trust I've placed in you."
Oboro leaned against the wall, slowly speaking, "The Uchiha have been making some big moves lately; it suggests an impending coup."
Shisui's brow furrowed, and after a moment of contemplation, he said, "I've heard whispers of that; someone on the border passed me information."
"Do you have any plans for it?" Oboro asked, pierced with curiosity.
Shisui fell silent.
"I won't allow a coup to happen."
"So, it's still the same old plan," Oboro remarked.
"I'm planning to request some privileges from the Hokage," Shisui added.
Oboro scoffed, "What's that gonna help? The Hokage himself is dealing with issues that can't be solved; those privileges won't change anything."
"I have to try," Shisui took a deep breath. "We can't let a coup take place. Regardless of who wins, it will inflict irreversible damage to Konoha."
"If other countries seize this moment, war could ignite again."
"You're right." Oboro acknowledged. "But given the current Uchiha circumstances, your method will only delay the coup temporarily. The villagers' resentment, the higher-ups' suspicions, and the Uchiha clan's mindset will inevitably manifest a new clan leader, leading the Uchiha down the same path once more."
"I understand everything you're saying," Shisui replied, a hint of annoyance in his voice.
"You've mentioned it multiple times, but what alternative do you have?"
"I can only pin my hopes on the time bought by Kotoamatsukami. I will try to change the status quo; this isn't entirely hopeless—there is still an opportunity for change."
Oboro quietly regarded Shisui before speaking, "Make the Uchiha relinquish their police authority."
Shisui blinked in surprise, furrowing his brow. "I've thought about that, but the clan head will never agree."
"They're about to act; they will not willingly relinquish that power."
"You can do this," Oboro stated calmly.
Hearing him, Shisui fell into contemplation; he understood what Oboro meant.
"But if we just ask them to step down without reason, how would the clan respond? That would oppose the wishes of most members. Even the clan head would find it difficult to agree."
"We can create an opportunity," Oboro continued. "An opportunity for the Uchiha to resign from their police authority."
"What opportunity?" Shisui asked, stunned.
"The Mist has had its eyes on Konoha for a while now," Oboro finally revisited the topic Shisui had initially raised.
"Then let them succeed."
