Chapter 50: Ch 50 : Trap
In the evening, an invitation was delivered to Makoto's home.
It was from Fugaku, inviting Makoto to visit the Uchiha clan the following day.
Makoto was in the living room discussing clan matters with some of the elders.
Many issues couldn't be resolved by his direct decisions alone; they required the cooperation of other clan members.
As the meeting was ending, one of the clan members subtly suggested that Makoto should consider his marriage.
The engagement between Hizashi and Ayari had been suddenly canceled for no apparent reason, and Makoto had been very close to Ayari before, which naturally led to speculation.
If what they anticipated were to happen, it would not look good if it spread.
Makoto had previously stated that he didn't need their concern regarding his marriage, but they didn't want to address it directly.
Instead, they subtly hinted that with the Hyuga clan's dwindling numbers, the leader of the clan needed to set an example.
Aside from the marriage issue, some members also asked when he planned to change his eyes.
Changing his eyes meant replacing his Byakugan, and the clan members found it odd that Makoto, as the leader of the Hyuga clan, did not have the Byakugan.
In the past, Makoto had tried every means to prevent this matter due to the Caged Bird Seal, but now that concern no longer existed.
It was only natural for him to change to the Byakugan again, as the Byakugan was not a normal eye and could indeed bring countless conveniences to him.
Although those Byakugan were currently with Orochimaru, if Makoto wanted a pair, Orochimaru would certainly not refuse.
However, Makoto was not in a hurry regarding this matter.
The change of eyes would not have a significant impact on his current situation, so he told the clan members that there was no rush.
Orochimaru had made little progress in his research on the Byakugan and had privately asked Makoto about it.
When Makoto first met Orochimaru, he had promised to assist him with the research on the Byakugan.
Makoto had not told him about the Tenseigan.
Not to mention that the probability of successfully researching it was very low, even impossible, but the information regarding the Byakugan was a crucial card in his hand.
Before he handed it over, he had to rapidly increase his own strength.
Or rather, he needed to quickly expand his power and influence in the shortest time possible.
The next morning, Makoto received a summons from Orochimaru's Anbu.
However, it was not to the Hokage Building or to Orochimaru's house, but to his newly established temporary research facility.
Orochimaru had moved his secret base from outside the village to inside the village.
The research facility he had funded through the Daimyo was just beginning construction, and many of the documents and equipment were stored in this temporary research lab.
However, this place was off-limits even to Orochimaru's personal Anbu, who could only guard outside.
Aside from Orochimaru, only two people were allowed entry—Makoto and Anko.
When Makoto arrived, he ran into Abko, who was bringing Orochimaru breakfast, and saw Orochimaru's face, which was suppressing an excited expression.
It seemed like he hadn't slept all night.
"Makoto, you've brought me something great," Orochimaru said, pacing around the dissection table where the White Zetsu corpse lay, his eyes focused on it like it was a precious treasure.
Seeing this, Makoto purposely asked, "Have you made any discoveries, Lord Hokage?"
Orochimaru immediately perked up: "This corpse is not of an ordinary human. I suspect it might be a life form created through some method."
"Its cells have an incredible level of activity far beyond that of a normal human, granting it terrifying regenerative abilities.
It also has a remarkable adaptability, capable of being transplanted into any organism or human."
Makoto was somewhat surprised.
Orochimaru had already made such progress in just two days?
Orochimaru muttered to himself, "If I can mass-produce this life form, then I could have perfect test subjects for any future experiments and research."
Not only that, but in his view, the cells in this corpse were far superior to human cells.
Perhaps he could even create a perfect human body.
It would be a perfect complement to the forbidden technique he had developed through inspiration from his work on spirit transformation.
Makoto suggested a more practical use: "Could it be used in the village's medical technology, to help those who lost limbs in the war to regenerate them?"
Orochimaru was slightly surprised, but after thinking for a moment, he nodded.
"That's possible."
He hadn't considered this angle at all; he was only thinking about his own future research.
As for the villagers, he didn't seem to care at all.
On the side, Anko, who didn't understand what the two were discussing, felt bored and began eating Orochimaru's breakfast.
"Lord Hokage."
Makoto's gaze flickered, and he suddenly said,
"The other day, when I encountered this creature, I heard a special name from its mouth."
Orochimaru's gaze remained on the corpse of White Zetsu, and he casually asked, "What was it?"
"Uchiha Madara."
"…"
Orochimaru froze upon hearing this and then glanced at Makoto.
"Uchiha... Madara?"
A person who's been dead for decades?
He looked back at the corpse of White Zetsu, his eyes flashing repeatedly.
"Are you sure you didn't mishear?" Orochimaru asked.
"It seemed like this creature thought it could easily kill me.
When I pressed it about the name 'Madara,' it directly said it was the Uchiha Madara who once built Konoha alongside the First Hokage," Makoto said slowly.
This was all fabricated, but at the time, there were no other witnesses besides Rin.
Since Rin is Minato's student, would Orochimaru really confront her over this?
"What else did it say?" Orochimaru asked, pressing further.
"Nothing else. It seems the creature attacked Rin with a specific purpose," Makoto replied.
Orochimaru fell silent, deep in thought.
At first, this situation seemed completely absurd.
If Uchiha Madara were still alive, he would be at least seventy or eighty years old by now.
An old man on the brink of death—no matter how powerful he had been in the past, could he still stand up to the passage of time?
But the corpse of White Zetsu lay before him, and a brand-new path for human experimentation that he hadn't explored yet was right in front of him.
He thought of another possibility—one he had always been pursuing!
"What about Rin?" Orochimaru suddenly asked.
"She went to the front lines," Makoto answered.
Orochimaru immediately frowned upon hearing this.
Since it was after Rin, you…
He looked at Makoto's calm expression and quickly regained his composure.
Was it possible that Makoto hadn't thought of what he was thinking?
Anko, sitting on the side and watching the two of them exchange intense looks, grew even more confused.
How did this involve Rin now?
Orochimaru pondered silently for a long time.
His interest in Uchiha Madara stemmed from the assumption that if Madara had control over something like White Zetsu, then he must have mastered advanced human body techniques.
At present, Orochimaru's research on human anatomy was still in its early exploratory stages.
The reason he delved into this area was due to the inspiration he gained from the Soul Transference Technique, which gave him the idea of achieving immortality by replacing the container of his soul.
In other words, the future Living Corpse Reincarnation (Edo Tensei).
"What's your plan?" Orochimaru asked.
"Lure the snake out of its hole?"
Makoto replied calmly,
"If the enemy is truly Uchiha Madara, an old monster who's lived for so many years, he'll undoubtedly be far more cunning than we can imagine.
What we lure out might not be the snake itself, but it will definitely lead us to a clue.
With the front lines quiet for now, Minato will intervene if necessary."
