Chapter 19: Chapter 19: The Demon of the Mist
The forest surrounding the river had fallen into silence, an unnatural stillness that sent chills down Naruto's spine. The once-clear morning air was now thick with an eerie mist, coiling around the trees like ghostly hands. The oppressive atmosphere was suffocating, a stark contrast to the warm sunlight they had basked in only moments ago.
Standing before them, his massive blade resting lazily on his shoulder, was the infamous Demon of the Mist—Zabuza Momochi. His predatory eyes glowed through the fog, sharp and calculating as he assessed his prey.
Sasuke's hand instinctively reached for a kunai. His mind raced, analyzing Zabuza's stance, his movements—this was no ordinary opponent.
Kakashi took a step forward, standing protectively in front of his students. His usual laid-back demeanor was gone, replaced by a sharp intensity. "Stay back. This man isn't someone you can take on yet."
Zabuza let out a low chuckle. "Oh? The famous Copy Ninja Kakashi… it's an honor." His voice dripped with amusement, yet there was an unmistakable edge to it. "I didn't expect Konoha to send such a high-profile shinobi to guard a mere bridge builder."
Tazuna swallowed hard, his hands trembling slightly. "Th-This guy… he's not normal, is he?"
Kakashi didn't take his eyes off Zabuza. "No. He's an elite assassin—one of the strongest Hidden Mist ever produced."
Naruto felt his heartbeat quicken. An elite assassin? His fingers curled into fists. This wasn't some bandit or rogue ninja—this was a real, trained killer.
Zabuza lifted his sword slightly. "You're a little famous yourself, Kakashi. They say you've copied over a thousand jutsu… but I wonder—" his smirk widened, revealing sharp, shark-like teeth, "—have you ever copied how to kill?"
Without warning, Zabuza moved.
The Predator Strikes
One moment, he was standing still—the next, he vanished.
Fast!
Naruto barely had time to react before Zabuza's massive Kubikiribōchō came swinging through the air, aimed directly at them.
CLANG!
Kakashi intercepted, his kunai clashing against the enormous blade with a deafening impact. The sheer force sent a shockwave through the clearing, rustling the trees and pushing Naruto and the others back.
Sakura let out a small gasp as she stumbled. That strength…
Zabuza grinned. "Not bad."
His free hand moved in a blur of seals. Water Style: Hidden Mist Jutsu!
The mist thickened instantly, swallowing the battlefield in a dense white fog. The world around them disappeared into a void of gray, leaving only the distant outlines of trees. The cold moisture clung to their skin, the heavy silence amplifying every breath.
Naruto's eyes darted around. "Where did he—?"
A chilling voice whispered through the mist.
"It's already too late."
Naruto spun around, kunai raised, but saw nothing.
Sasuke's grip tightened on his own weapon. This pressure… it's suffocating.
Kakashi's voice cut through the haze. "He's an expert in silent killing. His technique makes it impossible to hear his movements."
A sinister laugh echoed. "That's right. Before you even realize it…"
A cold presence flickered behind them.
"…your head is already gone."
A Blade from the Shadows
Before Naruto could react, a blur of motion erupted from the mist.
Zabuza appeared behind them, his massive blade swinging down with lethal precision.
Too fast!
Sasuke's Sharingan activated instinctively, his eyes catching the movement just in time.
"Kakashi-sensei!" Sasuke shouted.
CLANG!
Kakashi intercepted again, kunai meeting steel in a brilliant flash of sparks.
For a split second, Kakashi and Zabuza locked eyes. Then, without a word, Zabuza twisted his body, delivering a vicious kick to Kakashi's stomach.
THUD!
Kakashi was sent skidding back, his feet digging into the wet earth. He barely had time to recover before Zabuza vanished back into the mist.
Naruto clenched his fists. "Damn it! He keeps disappearing!"
Kakashi straightened, his eyes narrowing. "This is his domain. The mist isn't just for hiding—he's controlling the battlefield."
Zabuza's voice drifted through the fog again, taunting. "Correct. And now… let's see how long your students can survive."
Naruto's blood ran cold. He's targeting us!
The Hunter and the Prey
Sakura's grip tightened on her kunai, her heart pounding. Think, Sakura! How do we fight something we can't see?
Sasuke was already adjusting, his newly awakened Sharingan scanning the mist, trying to pick up even the slightest movement.
Kakashi's voice was firm. "Stay close to me. If you wander off, he'll pick you off one by one."
Naruto gritted his teeth. "We can't just sit here! We need to fight back!"
Sasuke's gaze flickered. "And how do you plan on hitting something you can't see?"
Before Naruto could argue, the air shifted.
Zabuza struck again.
This time, he appeared directly in the middle of them, his blade sweeping in a deadly arc.
Naruto barely managed to duck as the massive sword whooshed over his head, slicing through a tree like butter.
Sasuke moved on instinct, aiming a kunai at Zabuza's ribs.
Too slow.
Zabuza twisted mid-air, catching Sasuke's wrist and flinging him aside.
Sasuke hit the ground hard, rolling to a stop.
Zabuza smirked, his gaze turning to Sakura.
Naruto's eyes widened. "Sakura, move!"
But before Zabuza could strike—
Kakashi appeared behind him.
"Not this time."
Zabuza's eyes widened a fraction before Kakashi's kunai pressed against his throat.
"Got you."
The mist around them thinned slightly as Kakashi's chakra flared.
Zabuza let out a low chuckle. "Impressive. But—"
His body dissolved into water.
Kakashi's eyes widened. Water Clone!
Before he could react, the real Zabuza emerged from the mist behind him.
The massive blade came down.
Kakashi spun—
CLANG!
Steel met steel once more.
The two locked eyes, their battle intensifying.
Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura could only watch, tension gripping their chests.
This wasn't a fight like before.
This was a battle between two elite shinobi.
And the real fight had only just begun.
