Chapter 8: Chapter 8 – The Past
The streets of Konoha bustled with the usual energy of merchants, shinobi, and villagers going about their daily routines. But for Sasuke, the world outside barely registered. He walked quietly alongside Naruto and Sakura, his thoughts lost in the memories of the past.
It was the anniversary of the Uchiha Massacre. Seven years had passed, yet the memories remained vivid—his father's stern gaze, his mother's warm smile, and Itachi's cold, unreadable eyes on that fateful night.
Minato and Kushina had done everything to make him feel at home in the Namikaze household, but deep down, the ache of loss never fully faded. Today, it weighed heavier than usual.
Naruto noticed the distant look in Sasuke's eyes and nudged him lightly. "Hey, you okay? You've been quiet all morning."
Sasuke blinked, snapping out of his thoughts. "I'm fine," he muttered.
Sakura gave him a concerned glance but said nothing. She knew better than to push him on a day like this.
---
The trio soon arrived at the memorial stone where the names of fallen shinobi were engraved. Sasuke stood before it, his gaze lingering over the names of his clan members.
Minato approached quietly, standing beside him. "Thinking about them?"
Sasuke nodded slowly. "It's hard not to."
Minato placed a hand on Sasuke's shoulder. "Loss shapes us, but it doesn't define us. Your parents would be proud of the man you're becoming."
Sasuke remained silent for a moment before glancing at him. "Thanks, Minato... I mean... Dad." It still felt strange calling him that, but Minato only smiled warmly, understanding the weight of Sasuke's words.
Kushina arrived with a bento box, handing it to Sasuke with a grin. "I figured you'd be here. Thought I'd bring you something to eat. Can't have you brooding on an empty stomach!"
Sasuke accepted the box, a small smile breaking through his usually stoic expression. "Thanks... Mom."
Naruto grinned. "See? Food solves everything!"
Sasuke rolled his eyes. "Idiot."
The moment lightened, and for a brief second, Sasuke felt a warmth he hadn't known for years.
---
Far from the peace of Konoha, Orochimaru watched Sasuke through his network of spies.
"He's still attached to the village," Kabuto noted. "Minato and Kushina's influence runs deep."
Orochimaru smirked, his eyes gleaming with anticipation. "No matter. The curse mark is still within him. When the time comes, it will awaken his true potential."
Kabuto adjusted his glasses. "And if he resists?"
A dark chuckle escaped Orochimaru's lips. "Then we'll just have to remind him of what he's lost."
---
Later that day, at the training grounds, Sasuke trained with a renewed intensity. His punches struck the wooden post with precision, his Sharingan flickering to life with each calculated movement. Naruto sat nearby, slurping on ramen while watching.
"You've been going at it for hours," Naruto said. "You trying to get stronger than me or something?"
Sasuke smirked. "I already am."
Naruto's eyes twitched. "What?! Oh, it's on now!"
He stood up and prepared a Rasengan, charging at Sasuke. Sasuke reacted instantly, weaving hand signs for his Chidori. Their attacks clashed, the force sending a shockwave through the training field.
Sakura sighed from the sidelines. "They never stop."
Kakashi appeared out of nowhere, holding their wrists with ease. "Alright, that's enough. I'd rather not have to explain to the Hokage why half the village got blown up."
Sasuke and Naruto exchanged competitive glares before Kakashi let them go.
"Let's focus on refining your skills," Kakashi continued. "Sasuke, I've got a few things to teach you about the Sharingan."
Sasuke's eyes widened slightly. "You mean...?"
Kakashi nodded. "Yes. It's time you learn to push your limits further."
---
That night, as Sasuke rested, his mind drifted into uneasy dreams. Shadows swirled around him, and a familiar voice echoed in his subconscious.
"Power... you seek it, don't you?"
Sasuke's body tensed as he saw the silhouette of Orochimaru standing in the distance. The curse mark on his neck burned faintly, pulsing with an ominous energy.
"No," Sasuke muttered, clenching his fists. "I won't follow your path."
A sinister chuckle surrounded him. "You say that now... but the hunger for power never truly fades."
Sasuke's eyes snapped open, breathing heavily. He touched the mark on his neck, feeling its lingering presence. He needed to become stronger—but not at the cost of his soul.
Looking out the window at the Hokage Monument, Sasuke made a silent vow.
"I'll find my own strength."
