Chapter 89: Chapter 89: Obtaining Information
After saying goodbye to the elderly Stone Shinobi—clearly someone of high rank—Saitama adjusted his collar and followed his target down the street.
Ahead were four Rock Ninja, walking with slightly unsteady steps. They chatted and laughed lewdly, probably swapping crude adult jokes.
But none of that mattered to Saitama. All he wanted was a good spot to get the information he needed.
Night had already fallen, but the street remained bustling. Most pedestrians had either finished drinking or were on their way to do so. Saitama blended in naturally behind a group of Stone Shinobi.
Looks like luck was on Saitama's side—apparently caught up in an exciting conversation, one ninja suddenly grabbed another's arm and headed toward an alley where a streetwalker stood at the entrance, smiling seductively and waving at them.
Saitama glanced at the alley, then turned his attention to the remaining two shinobi. These two chose to keep walking forward—evidently not interested in stopping there for fun.
He tightened his collar and continued tailing this pair. Feeling that the alley wasn't a suitable place to act, Saitama decided to wait for a better chance.
"I just remembered I should grab some food for those slackers," one of them suddenly slapped his head and muttered to the other.
Their camp was just ahead. He told his companion to go back first while he went off to buy food for his lazy friends.
Saitama's eyes lit up. This was his opportunity.
Although even if facing all four shinobi at once, Saitama still felt fully confident, this was still Iwagakure territory—drawing too much attention wouldn't be wise.
This area marked the town's edge, nearly deserted, dimly lit by scattered yellow lights.
The Rock Ninja showed little caution as they walked, while Saitama silently crouched atop a rooftop above them.
These buildings looked abandoned; Saitama had already checked the surroundings earlier.
"Hiss!"
The temperature dropped sharply at night. A sudden gust of wind made the Rock Ninja hiss and pull his neck deeper into his collar.
Whoosh! Saitama leapt swiftly from the rooftop, wasting no motion. Without a word, he drove a single punch straight into the enemy's neck. The opponent never saw it coming and collapsed instantly.
Saitama glanced around. The area was still dead silent and completely empty. He slung the shinobi over his shoulder and carried him into one of the nearby houses.
...
Crackle! A buzzing static sound broke the silence. Saitama placed his right hand on the enemy's body. Under the electric shock, the prisoner convulsed briefly before regaining consciousness.
"Where am I?" Dazed, he shook his head, trying to figure out what had happened. The last thing he remembered was a sharp pain at the back of his head before everything went black.
He quickly realized he'd been attacked and tried to stand up.
But obviously, he failed. His entire body was tightly bound, and a black rag stuffed in his mouth left him unable to utter more than muffled sounds.
Crackle!
Another surge of electricity brought a flicker of light into the darkened room. Saitama smirked as he stood over the prisoner.
The Stone shinobi widened his eyes and thrashed about violently, seemingly trying to break free from Saitama's bindings.
"That's right — I'm a Konoha ninja. I need answers. I ask, you talk."
Saitama shut off the Chidori Current crackling in his palm. Facing each other, a ray of sunlight filtered through the window beside them, illuminating the Stone ninja while Saitama himself remained in shadow.
The Stone ninja stayed silent, but Saitama could see mockery in his eyes.
Shrugging indifferently, Saitama wasn't surprised — he had expected this reaction long ago.
Before leaving, Saitama had specifically asked Inoichi Yamanaka for a soundproof barrier scroll that could be reused multiple times.
Just now, he had activated the barrier inside this room, so he didn't fear the prisoner calling for help and drawing more enemies. Although this place wasn't far from the Stone camp, many of them would pass by just outside.
"There's a barrier here. No matter how hard you scream, no one will come to save you."
As he spoke, Saitama stepped closer to the enemy. Electricity began crackling in his right hand again.
In his previous life, he'd heard of a cruel punishment called the electric chair. This situation looked almost exactly like it — Saitama wanted to test its effectiveness.
[Crackling electricity]!
His right hand landed on the enemy's shoulder. The current surged wildly, causing the man to spasm uncontrollably throughout his body.
Aaaah! A scream echoed around the room, but the sound waves seemed to hit invisible barriers at its edges, fading away without escaping outside.
The smell of burnt flesh began spreading. Saitama showed no emotion as he pulled his hand away.
This method of obtaining intelligence was too crude and violent. It lacked any sophistication. Even if he did get answers, he wouldn't know whether they were truthful or not.
"Have you decided yet? You just need to answer a few simple questions. I won't push you for anything else."
Saitama repeated calmly, standing relaxed with arms crossed in front of the captured ninja.
"If you're ready to talk, just nod, and then I'll remove the gag from your mouth."
He pointed toward the enemy's mouth as he continued speaking.
The enemy was smoking slightly, his hair turning yellowed at the tips. His facial muscles twitched painfully together, making him appear absolutely miserable.
Perhaps the shock had been too strong — the enemy took a moment to recover. Just as Saitama was beginning to lose patience, the man finally gave a weak nod.
"Great!" Saitama clapped his hands cheerfully and removed the cloth stuffed in the enemy's mouth. He had picked it up from the floor earlier — who knew what it had been used for — it smelled terrible anyway.
"Now I ask, you answer." Saitama noticed the defeated look on the enemy's face. When he removed the rag, the man made no attempt to shout out.
"What unit are you part of?"
"Logistics transport unit..."
The numbing effect of the electricity hadn't completely worn off. The prisoner's tongue was still thick and clumsy, his speech punctuated by involuntary twitches that made it difficult for Saitama to hear clearly. But he had time to listen patiently, choosing not to dwell on these issues.
...
"Very well, my questions are finished. I hope you haven't lied to me."
Saitama asked a few simple questions, like who was commanding the unit and what the next mission would be, then stopped there. He was just a Chunin; he wouldn't have access to higher-level intel anyway.
From the enemy's mouth, Saitama learned that the person in charge here was a Jonin named Shihara Shin, responsible for managing the transportation of supplies.
There were around 300 local ninja stationed here, though every Wednesday a village transport team would arrive, bringing even more.
The enemy looked at Saitama, his eyes full of fear. Just now, to ensure the accuracy of the information, Saitama had repeatedly used electric shocks to confirm that he wasn't lying, so now the man was trembling all over. If not for the ropes binding him, he probably would have collapsed to the ground.
"Our business here is finished, but if I release you, will you go report this? After all, you've seen my face."
Saitama leaned close to the enemy, lowering himself to the bound ninja's eye level, maintaining direct eye contact while keeping his expression calm.
"Ugh... Lord, I..." the Stone Ninja tried to explain something, but his body was still too paralyzed to form a coherent sentence.
Swish! Right hand fingers together, shaped like a blade, electricity transformed into a sharp edge along the palm. Saitama flicked his wrist, slicing across the enemy's throat.
A trickle of blood seeped from the wound. Saitama observed the enemy's wide eyes, listening to the wheezing sounds fading from his mouth, remaining emotionless.
After the blood had pooled onto the floor and the enemy showed no signs of life, Saitama pulled out a scroll and sealed the corpse into it before departing.
In such circumstances, there was no way to just let the enemy go. Unlike Jiraiya, he didn't possess any boss summons—summoned beasts large enough to swallow a person whole—that could hold someone temporarily for future release. So he could do nothing but handle it this way.
