Naruto: Chronicles of the Lost Library

Chapter 13: Chapter 14: The Broken Flame

The loop faded. Kazuki's voice died with it.

Naruto stood still, staring at the spot where the glowing chakra thread had just hovered. It looked empty now. Quiet. But the air still felt warm, like the heat hadn't left yet. Like the flame had just breathed its last.

Then, beneath his feet, the floor gave a soft tremor.

Click.

Click.

Click.

The wall ahead shifted.

Thin trails of orange chakra snaked along the stone surface. A triangle appeared. Then a circle. Then a faint hiss as a groove split open, revealing a dark hallway beyond.

The smell hit him instantly.

Not old stone. Not mold or dust.

Burnt parchment. Scorched chakra oil.

Naruto frowned and stepped inside. He didn't hesitate. Not anymore.

The corridor spiraled downward like a snake's tail. Narrow. Dimly lit. The chakra threads lining the walls flickered weakly, like tired veins under skin. They felt alive… but just barely.

Then he saw another one.

A new loop. Another glowing figure-eight, floating in the middle of the path.

He sighed and reached for it.

Kazuki's voice came through again faint and rough this time.

Another step. Another mistake.

I never asked you to follow this far. You really don't know when to stop, do you?

Naruto clenched his teeth. "Then why the hell did you leave the damn trail?"

The thread vanished.

He kept walking.

The deeper he went, the heavier the air got. His breath came slower. Not from fear, but from something thicker. Something that pressed against his lungs like guilt.

He reached another chamber. Bigger this time. Blackened stone walls. Metal spires bent like they'd melted and tried to stand again. Shelves of scrolls lay in ruins—torched, burned beyond recognition.

There was another loop by a cracked pillar.

He touched it.

The Library gives you answers. But never the truth. Just enough to make you feel important. Just enough to keep you going like a dumb little pawn.

Kazuki's tone this time was bitter. Not angry—just done.

It tells you you're chosen. That you're different. But it's all bullshit. It's just an archive of people who screwed up before you.

Naruto's hands curled into fists.

"Then why are you still here, fucking asshole?" he muttered.

The answer didn't come.

Instead, he pushed deeper.

Another loop. This one pulsed faster, like it was panicking.

I warned them. I tried to get out.

But the Library doesn't forget.

The loop short-circuited mid-sentence. It blinked and burned out like a dying ember.

Naruto stood there, staring at it.

He wasn't chasing some villain. He wasn't unraveling a riddle.

He was following a trail of someone who had been just as lost. Just as furious.

Kazuki didn't build this place.

He was trying to run from it.

The corridor widened again. The floor stretched into a circular chamber—massive, hollow, quiet. The ceiling vanished into shadows. On the ground, carved deep into the stone, was the shape of a giant flame.

Split down the middle.

Right where the crack met the center, one final loop hovered.

It barely glowed.

Naruto knelt beside it and touched the center.

There was no voice this time.

Just one line, carved into the thread itself, blinking faintly like the last beat of a dying heart.

If you're here, it's already too damn late.

And then nothing.

No more loops. No more voices.

Just him.

Naruto stared at the broken emblem beneath his feet. He didn't feel like a hero. Not like a savior. Not even like himself.

This wasn't a test.

This wasn't a trial.

This was someone else's unfinished mess.

And now… it was his too.
