Chapter 8: Chapter 8: First Steps on the Path of Wood
The wood-type ability book was surprisingly thick—about the width of a finger.
A stark contrast to the thin and almost flimsy Spirit Eye manual.
"Let's see what kind of powers the wood element has..." Renji Takahashi muttered, flipping to the first page.
Growth Acceleration: Stimulates rapid plant growth, greatly shortening natural growth cycles. Useful for agricultural cultivation.Seed Reproduction: Generates seeds from spirit energy, useful for producing food crop seeds.Minor Healing: Uses life energy to heal small wounds. Basic team support skill.
Renji's mouth twitched.
Seriously?
The first two abilities screamed "farmer."
And honestly? Farming wasn't exactly a priority anymore.
Sure, conditions were harsh outside the city, but food shortages weren't a major issue. Monster meat, rich in energy, had long replaced crops as the staple food.
Wood-ability users grew crops, yeah—but not exactly glamorous.
And healing?Wood psychics were the weakest of the healers. Their life energy could only patch up minor scrapes and bruises. If someone broke a bone or worse, you'd better hope for a water-element healer instead.
Water psychics not only healed better but were also far more common. Their training systems were more complete, their cultivation paths clearer, and their power books more refined.
Whether in farming or healing, wood psychics were firmly second-rate.
And that was the awkward truth: in combat, wood abilities were practically useless.
And as for his Spirit Eye?
On paper, "S-rank" sounded powerful. But when the actual ability capped at simple spiritual perception and maybe some detection, well... No wonder people called him:
"The strongest waste of an S-rank psychic."
Even Renji had to admit, by Azure Dragon Academy's standards, wood and spirit psychics were dead ends.
But that was their system.
Renji wasn't bound by their limits.
He had Wood Release and the Sharingan.Abilities far beyond what this world's classification could grasp.
They thought wood was useless?Fine. Let them think that.
Still, mastering the basics couldn't hurt. Might as well learn the standard techniques for Spirit Eye and wood abilities. The more he knew, the better.
Once theory class ended, the students gathered on the large training balcony to practice.
The auxiliary class wasn't entirely wood users. Actually, wood psychics were rare.
Including Renji, only two wood-element users were present.
The rest were here because their abilities were too weak for the combat classes. Most were stuck with D-rank or E-rank elements—barely enough to light a candle.
In this world, they were cannon fodder. Nothing more.
The balcony lit up with a chaotic rainbow of spiritual energies as each student practiced.
Renji found a patch of grass in a quiet corner. He placed his hand on the earth and slowly let his wood-element spirit energy flow out.
A gentle green light surrounded the grass.
In seconds, the blades stretched taller and greener, flourishing under his palm.
"Pretty decent effect... but hardly battle-ready," Renji sighed.
This world really had neglected wood abilities. No offense, no defense. Just agriculture.
Still, practice made perfect.
That's when a small, timid boy approached him.
"Um... h-hi. I'm Wei Lin," the boy stammered.
Renji smiled politely. "Hey. I'm Renji."
Wei Lin hesitated, clutching his hands nervously. "C-could I ask you something?"
"Sure?"
"Could you... um... teach me? I'm wood element too, but I can't figure out Growth Acceleration. I saw you using it, so... I thought maybe..."
The kid looked so anxious, like he expected to be yelled at.
Oh, right. The only two wood-element users in the class.
Renji vaguely remembered—Wei Lin was a C-rank single wood user, which, yeah... wasn't great.
"Why not ask the teacher? Oh wait..." Renji glanced toward their strict instructor, Professor Shizuka Sumiya, and immediately understood.
Yeah. He wouldn't ask her either.
"Alright, I'll help. But I only learned it myself today."
Wei Lin's face lit up. "R-really?! Thank you!"
"It's nothing. Don't sweat it."
Renji taught him the basics of Growth Acceleration and Seed Reproduction, explaining what little he'd figured out.
Wei Lin bowed repeatedly. "Thank you! Thank you so much!"
Renji waved him off. "No need to thank me for something this small."
The first day of class wrapped up soon after.
Most students were satisfied. They'd finally learned real techniques. Even if they were weak, it was a start.
As Renji packed his things to leave, he noticed someone else heading for the door.
It was Yuna Hoshizaki.
The school beauty.
Without even trying, Yuna drew the attention of every student nearby.
Renji slowed his steps, giving her space.
But then—unexpectedly—she paused beside him, turned, and gently extended a hand.
Her smile was faint, but dazzling. "Hello, Renji Takahashi."
Renji froze.
Was... was she greeting him? Voluntarily??
"Uh... hey." He shook her hand awkwardly.
The entire class—and even some students passing by—stared in stunned silence.
Yuna Hoshizaki.The school goddess.
Just took the initiative to greet a guy.
And shook his hand.
