Naruto: Eating A Devil Fruit In The World Of Shinobi

Chapter 65: Chapter 65: Stalling for time.

Guessing in your mind is one thing, but confirming it with your own eyes is another!

"Hey! Go away! Leave Konoha and find your teacher!"

"Fine! But before I go, I've got a few words of advice!"

"Old man of the Third Generation! You're past your prime. You carry the title of Hokage, but not its strength."

"With you still in charge, Konoha will never thrive. Like you, it's decaying… its days are numbered."

"You've stifled the next generation. You don't understand what today's young shinobi need."

"When you're old, act your age. Stop clinging to power. It's time to consider the Fifth Hokage."

Kaito's tone was calm, yet every word landed heavily. As he spoke, Hiruzen Sarutobi's expression grew darker and more somber.

"How dare you, Kaito! You're just a Genin—what gives you the right to talk to the Hokage that way?!" Ebisu snapped, adjusting his glasses.

In Ebisu's eyes, the Hokage had given everything to Konoha. To him, Hiruzen was a symbol of dedication and sacrifice—how could he be spoken to like this?

"Right? You want qualifications?" Kaito scoffed, biting his thumb.

Chakra surged through his palm, dense and vibrant.

[Summoning Jutsu!]

Bang!

With a thunderous burst of smoke, a giant slug emerged at the edge of the battlefield.

Kaito landed smoothly atop its head, his posture confident and relaxed.

"Lord Kaito, what would you have of me?" the slug asked gently, its antennae swaying with slight confusion. It glanced at the surrounding Konoha shinobi, puzzled to see the Third Hokage among them. Had Kaito turned against the village?

"That's a… slug?"

Kaito could actually summon slugs! That meant… his teacher…

"He's Tsunade-sama's disciple!"

Upon realizing this, several shinobi who had been ready to engage Kaito immediately backed down.

They couldn't afford to make an enemy of him. No wonder the Hokage had let Kaito get away with destroying Root instead of ordering his execution.

So this was all an internal clash among the Hokage's own students and successors?

Ebisu immediately retreated, shrinking like a frightened animal as soon as the slug appeared.

Familiar faces like Hiashi Hyuga, Yamanaka Inoichi, and Kurenai Yuhi were already numb from all the displays of power Kaito had shown.

"Nothing serious," Kaito said with a grin. "Just wanted to get some fresh air."

As he spoke, the storm above began to fade.

Everyone's attention shifted from Kaito to the distance—towards the ruins of Root.

Eventually, the clouds parted, revealing a bright full moon.

Moonlight poured down.

The entire Root base was scorched black, glowing faintly with red arcs of electricity. The heat still radiated intensely, and the air stank of burned flesh. A deep, charred abyss stretched downward—unnatural and foreboding.

Whoosh!

Suddenly, a figure shot out from within the abyss.

In his hand was a charred corpse, barely recognizable save for a few scraps of unburnt bandages.

He tossed it in front of Hiruzen.

"Look. This is what's left of that old dog Danzo," Kaito said calmly, then turned and dispelled his shadow clone atop the slug.

"That was a clone?! So Danzo wasn't dead when we got here?" Hiruzen shouted, both shocked and furious.

"Correct," Kaito replied. "That old bastard not only implanted Hashirama's cells but also stole multiple Sharingan from the Uchiha. He wasn't going down easy."

"If he were just an average man, I would've wiped out the whole of Root before you even arrived."

The moment Kaito sensed Hiruzen approaching with his chakra sensing, he had used a shadow clone to stall for time—while his real body went after Danzo directly.

With the full power of the Thunder Fruit under his control, Kaito was now immune to lightning and could manipulate it freely.

What was death to others was fuel to him.

Descending into the abyss, he found Danzo alone, surrounded by the corpses of his subordinates.

"Don't think I don't recognize you just because you're wearing a mask!" Danzo had shouted, his expression twisted with hatred. "Why? Why destroy Root?!"

"No reason," Kaito had said coolly. "You messed with someone you shouldn't have."

And with that, he vanished in a blink of lightning.

Crack!

He reappeared beside Danzo, reaching for his right eye and digging it out with one clean motion. A scarlet Sharingan emerged from Danzo's socket.

"So this is Shisui's Mangekyō…"

"You bastard!" Danzo roared, blood pouring from his eye. "I won't let this go!"

Ignoring the pain, Danzo used Wind Release to deflect the red lightning around him while desperately trying to climb out of the abyss, avoiding natural bolts from the sky.

His desperation was obvious.

But Kaito smirked coldly.

"You think I'd let you crawl out of here alive?"

He raised his palm—
