Chapter 205: Chapter 203: Stirring the Snake
Chapter 203: Stirring the Snake
Two stories unfold simultaneously.
While Shakemoku and his companions were strategizing ways to retrieve Fuu, White Stone had already arrived at the border area between the Land of Grass and the Land of Earth.
"You've arrived, my lord!"
Seeing White Stone appear, Natsubi and the others immediately knelt in greeting.
White Stone glanced at them briefly, then turned his gaze toward a distant town. "Is this the place?"
"Yes, my lord," Natsubi replied. She stepped forward, pointing toward the town in the distance. "After thorough investigation, we've confirmed that the wandering monk named Roshi is currently in that town."
"You didn't go in, did you?"
White Stone's tone was calm, but his question carried weight.
"No, my lord," Natsubi assured. "You instructed us not to alert the enemy, so we haven't approached."
"Good. Well done."
Satisfied, White Stone nodded, then sat cross-legged and activated the Spirit Transformation Technique.
The moment his spirit left his body, his perception expanded dramatically, and the souls of the town's inhabitants became clear to him. Within seconds, he locked onto two particularly distinctive presences.
"Roshi… and Four-Tails. They're both here!"
Muttering to himself, White Stone deactivated the technique. After some thought, he ordered, "Natsubi, take a few people into the town and drive him out."
"Yes, my lord!"
Natsubi acknowledged the order, quickly assembling a small group and heading toward the town.
---
Meanwhile, in the Town
Inside a small home, Roshi was performing a blessing ritual for a family when the Four-Tails suddenly spoke in his mind.
"Something isn't right…"
Roshi's heart tightened. He mentally replied, "What's wrong?"
"I felt someone observing us just now," the Four-Tails said, its voice unusually serious.
Unlike other Jinchuriki, Roshi had spent years building a cooperative relationship with the Four-Tails. As a result, he didn't fully suppress the beast's external perception, and in return, the Four-Tails would alert him to any potential threats.
This arrangement had allowed Roshi to avoid numerous dangers during his years of wandering. But the tone of the Four-Tails this time was different, causing Roshi's unease to grow.
"'Us'?" Roshi's thoughts raced. "You mean someone sensed your presence?"
"Yes," the Four-Tails confirmed. "And I couldn't pinpoint their location."
Roshi's concern turned into urgency. Apologizing hastily to the family, he left the house and moved toward the town's outskirts.
However, before he could escape, Natsubi and her team arrived.
Their approach was anything but stealthy, as their goal was to flush Roshi out of the town rather than engage him directly.
Such overt behavior immediately caught Roshi's attention, and his heart sank.
'Are they confident in their strength? Or do they have reinforcements waiting outside?'
Despite his questions, Roshi quickly glanced around at the townspeople. Knowing he couldn't afford a confrontation here, he gritted his teeth and headed for the outskirts, with Natsubi and her team deliberately maintaining a non-threatening distance.
---
A Few Kilometers from the Town
After about ten kilometers, Roshi stopped. He waited for a few moments but didn't see Natsubi or her team following him.
'Strange… Did they leave?'
Confused, Roshi was about to ask the Four-Tails for its insight when the beast preempted him.
"Be careful! There's someone above!"
Roshi's gaze snapped upward, and he spotted a figure shrouded in a glowing blue light rapidly approaching.
"That light…"
Recognition dawned on Roshi's face, and he muttered in shock, "It's White Stone!"
Despite his grievances with Onoki, he had kept abreast of significant developments in the shinobi world—especially the incident where White Stone had captured Han and the Five-Tails.
Roshi felt a chill run down his spine. Though he hated to admit it, he knew he couldn't match White Stone's strength.
'Thankfully, I still have a backup plan.'
He glanced briefly at the ground, as though seeing through it to the magma flowing beneath.
Yes, magma.
As a seasoned Jinchuriki who had experienced two great shinobi wars, Roshi never stayed in one place for long. Wherever he went, he made sure to familiarize himself with the terrain and prepare an escape route.
Here, the underground magma river was his ace.
Both Roshi and the Four-Tails specialized in lava-based abilities, and with the magma's support, he believed he could even challenge White Stone.
Calming his nerves, Roshi steadied his breath and prepared for battle.
---
Above the Battlefield
In the sky, White Stone observed Roshi standing still below.
"Hmm… It seems he's chosen his ground," White Stone murmured, descending steadily toward the earth.
This act of willingly giving up his aerial advantage caught Roshi off guard.
'Why would he do that? With his abilities, staying airborne would give him a huge advantage.'
While Roshi was still pondering, White Stone's hands formed seals with blinding speed.
"Sage Art: Ice Style—Prison of Ice!"
White Stone's previously unseen Ice Style bloodline limit caught Roshi completely off guard.
Under the influence of White Stone's sage chakra, the Ice Style technique was astonishingly effective, instantly freezing the ground within a hundred-meter radius and cutting off Roshi's connection to the underground magma river.
