Chapter 32: Chapter 17:The quarter finals!
The match between Choji and Naruko was up next, but before Iruka could even officially start it, Choji raised his hand to forfeit. "I... I don't think I can win against you, Naruko," he muttered, avoiding eye contact. His usual cheerful demeanor seemed a bit more serious, and the crowd murmured in surprise.
Naruko blinked, visibly disappointed at not getting to fight. She scratched the back of her head, "Aww, Choji, come on! Are you sure? We could still have a fun match!"
Choji shook his head firmly, glancing over at Shikamaru, who gave him an encouraging nod. "Yeah... it's not that I don't want to try, Naruko, it's just... you're really strong, and I don't want to make a fool of myself." He gave a nervous chuckle, but his sincerity was clear.
Naruko pouted for a moment, but then she softened, realizing that Choji had thought this through. 'Guess he doesn't feel like he has a chance, huh? It's not fun beating someone who doesn't want to fight anyway.' She smiled, walking up to him and patting him on the shoulder. "It's okay, Choji! I get it. We'll spar sometime when you're ready, alright?"
Choji smiled in relief. "Thanks, Naruko. You're a good friend."
The crowd clapped politely, though there wasn't the same excitement in the air as with other matches. Iruka rubbed his temple in slight frustration but waved his hand. "Alright then, since Choji has forfeited, Naruko advances to the next round."
Naruko waved cheerfully at the crowd even though not many supported her, "Hehe, I guess that was the fastest win ever!"
The next match pitted Shino against Hitomi, and the tension in the air was palpable. Hitomi's Sharingan flared to life as she focused on Shino, who stood calmly, already releasing his kikaichū insects from his sleeves. 'Those bugs are going to be tricky,' she thought. 'But I've got a few tricks of my own.'
As Iruka shouted, "Begin!", Hitomi's eyes caught movement—tiny insects swarming towards her from the side. Without missing a beat, she leaped back, narrowly avoiding the first wave of bugs. Shino's calm expression remained unchanged, though his insects moved in synchronized swarms, shooting out towards her like tiny, buzzing missiles.
Hitomi backflipped gracefully to dodge another wave, all the while launching a kunai at Shino. Her Sharingan tracked every bug's movement, but just as she felt a light brush on her shoulder, she slapped at it. 'Damn, some bugs got through... they're already draining my chakra.' She could feel a slight energy loss, but there was no time to dwell on it.
Shino dodged her kunai smoothly, but a flicker of surprise crossed his face when, in the same instant, Hitomi appeared directly in front of him. 'The kunai... it was a distraction!' he realized. She had used the moment he evaded to close the distance between them.
In a swift movement, Hitomi wove hand signs. "Fire Style: Fireball Jutsu!" A blazing sphere of fire erupted from her mouth, roaring toward Shino's main swarm of insects. The heat from the flame was intense, forcing the kikaichū to retreat, but not before many of them were caught in the blaze, turning to ash mid-air.
Shino's usually stoic face tightened as he watched his primary colony of insects burn away. 'I need to preserve the rest of my bugs to maintain the colony... I can't afford to lose them all,' he thought.
Raising his hand, Shino stepped back. "I surrender," he stated calmly, his expression unreadable but the frustration behind his glasses evident.
The crowd murmured in surprise, not expecting Shino to forfeit. Iruka nodded, stepping forward. "Shino Aburame has surrendered. Hitomi Uchiha wins the match!"
Hitomi smirked, satisfied, but not overconfident. 'That was close... his bugs almost got me.' She flicked her hair back as she turned to walk off the field, the faint glow of her Sharingan fading. She glanced at Naruko and Yuto, who were both watching intently. Naruko gave her a playful thumbs up, while Yuto nodded with approval.
'One step closer to the final,' Hitomi thought as she returned to her friends, inwardly glad her plan worked.
Yuto stepped forward, his eyes locking onto Hinata. She stood before him, her posture tense, her eyes wide with panic and uncertainty. He could see the conflict within her, the hesitation. 'She's worried,' he thought, his gaze softening. But he knew Hinata needed more than reassurance—she needed confidence.
Yuto called out, his voice steady, "Hinata, give it your all. I expect nothing less." His words carried across the arena, causing murmurs to ripple through the audience. Hinata blinked in surprise, not expecting such encouragement. "This will be a tough fight," Yuto added, his lips curling into a small smile.
Hinata's eyes widened. 'He believes in me?' she thought, her heart racing. She could feel warmth spreading through her chest, not from fear, but from his faith in her. 'I can't let him down… I won't let him down!' she resolved, her nerves steadying. Even if she knew deep down she didn't stand a chance, Hinata clenched her fists. 'I'll give it everything I have.'
Iruka raised his hand and shouted, "Begin!"
Hinata activated her Byakugan, her veins bulging around her eyes as she immediately switched to her clan's stance. The audience gasped as Yuto, in response, activated his Kamigan. The glowing red eyes with intricate patterns drew attention from everyone. The two stared at each other for a brief moment, and then Yuto made his move.
He dashed forward, engaging Hinata in a close-quarters fight. Hinata thrust her palms toward him with a series of precise, calculated strikes, aiming for his chakra points, the essence of her Gentle Fist style. But Yuto was focused, dodging and parrying each attack with ease. He wasn't attacking her back, just defending, moving fluidly like water around her strikes.
'I see... so this is how the Gentle Fist works,' Yuto thought, his eyes analyzing each movement. 'It's not just taijutsu; they're blocking chakra with pinpoint precision. But... what if I could do the same? What if I could block chakra with something more destructive, like wind chakra?' His mind buzzed with ideas, but he quickly refocused.
Hinata gritted her teeth, pushing herself harder as she thrust her fingers forward, aiming for his chest. Yuto parried her hand away, but when he caught sight of the pained expression on her face, he winced. She recoiled slightly, holding her wrist where his punch had collided with her palm.
"I'm sorry," Yuto said quietly. "I don't want to hurt you."
Hinata shook her head quickly. "No, it's... I'm fine," she stammered, her voice trembling, but she was determined. She charged at him again, this time faster, her strikes more relentless.
Yuto continued dodging and blocking. 'I need to observe more... how is the chakra flowing through her fingertips? If I could replicate this… I could block chakra points, maybe even sever them with a different element.' His Kamigan scanned every movement, every shift in her chakra flow. He was learning, analyzing everything at an incredible pace.
After a few more minutes of parrying and evading, Yuto began to understand the basics of how the Gentle Fist operated. 'It's almost like applying chakra with pinpoint accuracy to disrupt someone's flow. I've got the concept down, but using it now might cause trouble... the Hyuga clan will be furious if I copy their techniques,' Yuto thought, making a mental note to practice it in private later. 'I'll save it for when I'm stronger. I'll deal with the Hyuga backlash when the time comes.'
Hinata, breathing heavily, tried to land one last strike, but Yuto moved behind her with lightning speed, his hand gently resting on her shoulder. "It's over," he whispered softly, and before she could react, he chopped lightly at the side of her neck, careful not to hurt her. Hinata's body slumped as she lost consciousness, her body crumpling to the ground.
The crowd was stunned. Iruka quickly raised his hand. "Yuto wins!"
Yuto gently lowered Hinata to the ground, making sure she was comfortable. 'She gave it her all... she didn't back down,' Yuto thought, a small smile forming on his face. He could see the determination in her even before she passed out. He stood and looked at her with admiration.
As the medical team came to take Hinata, Yuto gave her one final look. "You did great, Hinata."
