Chapter 61: Chapter 16:Bonds!
It had been two days since the intense battle on the bridge. Team 7 and the Kiri duo—Zabuza and Haku—had decided to make a temporary truce, agreeing that mutual recovery was their current priority. The atmosphere at Tazuna's house was calmer, though there was still an air of tension between the two groups.
Kakashi sat propped up against the wall, his usual aloof demeanor masking the pain from the injuries he sustained during the fight with Zabuza. He looked over at Zabuza, who leaned against the opposite wall with his massive sword resting beside him.
"How are your arms, Yuto?" Kakashi asked, glancing at his student who was seated on the floor, inspecting his bandaged forearms.
"They're healing," Yuto replied, though his voice betrayed the lingering discomfort. 'Still hurts to even flex my fingers,' he thought, clenching his teeth as he tried to make a fist. "I'll manage," he added aloud, not wanting to show any weaknesses. He had developed a feeling of liking to show off his cool side. So he wouldn't want to break that side now.
Haku, sitting nearby, glanced at Yuto with a faint smile. Her own arms were bandaged, and faint burn marks were still visible on her skin. "You fought well," she said softly. "Even in pain, you don't let it slow you down."
Yuto met her gaze and nodded. "Same to you. That ice of yours… it's incredible, but it doesn't hold back." His tone was sincere, and a flicker of respect passed between the two.
Meanwhile, Naruko and Hitomi were sitting near the lake, their expressions more relaxed compared to the previous day. The two had spent the last two nights grappling with the weight of their first kills, but they had grown noticeably calmer. Naruko stretched, her usual grin returning to her face.
"Man, it still feels weird," Naruko admitted, staring out at the forest. "But… I guess it's part of being a ninja. I can't let it stop me."
Hitomi, sitting beside her, gave a small nod. "It was terrifying, but Yuto was right. If we don't learn to handle it now, it'll only get harder later."
Inside, Tazuna's daughter Tsunami moved quietly between the rooms, checking on the injured and bringing food. When she entered Zabuza and Haku's room, she hesitated briefly, still wary of the rogue ninja. Zabuza noticed her pause and grunted.
"I'm not gonna bite, woman," Zabuza growled, his voice gruff but devoid of hostility.
Tsunami stiffened before continuing her task. "I just… wasn't expecting a man like you to be resting in my home," she admitted.
Zabuza let out a low chuckle. "Don't get used to it. Once I'm healed, I'm out of here."
Kakashi, overhearing the exchange from the hallway, couldn't help but smirk. "For someone who claims not to care, you're awfully cooperative, Zabuza."
Zabuza shot Kakashi a glare but didn't respond, choosing instead to close his eyes and rest.
Later that evening, the group gathered around the small dining table for dinner. The atmosphere was surprisingly light as Naruko and Hitomi bantered, their usual personalities returning.
"I bet I could've taken out more mercenaries if my clone hadn't poofed!" Naruko declared proudly, pointing her chopsticks at Hitomi.
Hitomi rolled her eyes. "You? Please. I had at least double your count."
Yuto chuckled, shaking his head. "You two were struggling not to puke afterward, and now you're competing?"
Naruko crossed her arms, pouting. "Hey! Don't make fun of us! At least we didn't pass out like you almost did!"
"She's got a point," Kakashi chimed in, his visible eye curving in amusement, much to the embarassment of Yuto.
The table erupted into light laughter, even Zabuza cracking a faint smirk at their antics.
As the night wore on, Yuto found himself sitting alone near the lake, staring at the moonlit forest. His thoughts wandered to the fight, the lives he had taken, and the ones he had saved.
Yuto heard the soft crunch of footsteps on the wooden porch behind him. He turned his head slightly and saw Haku walking toward him, her movements graceful despite the bandages on her arms. She silently sat down beside him, leaving a comfortable distance between them.
For a while, neither of them spoke. The chirping of crickets and the distant sound of waves filled the silence. Finally, Yuto broke the quiet, his voice low and heavy.
"Killing really sucks," he muttered, staring out at the forest. His eyes were distant, lost in thought.
Haku nodded softly, her gaze following his. "It does."
Yuto exhaled, running a hand through his hair, wincing slightly from the pain in his arms. "I kept telling myself that those mercenaries had done terrible things under Gato. That they deserved it. But…" He paused, clenching his fists. "Even after telling myself that over and over, I couldn't shake this gut-punching feeling. It's like something's clawing at me from the inside."
Haku glanced at him, her expression calm yet understanding. "I feel the same," she admitted. Her voice was soft, carrying the weight of her own experiences. "I was born in Kiri, a place infamous for its ruthlessness. The people there… they call it the Village of the Bloody Mist for a reason. Death and killing are second nature to most of them."
Her gaze dropped to her lap as she folded her hands together. "Even Zabuza-sama… he's killed so many. Yet I…" She hesitated, her voice trembling slightly. "I don't like hurting people, let alone killing them. And this…" She gestured vaguely at the house behind them. "This was my first time taking lives. So many lives."
Yuto looked at her, noticing the faint tremor in her hands. He could see the burden she carried, one that mirrored his own. Before he could respond, Haku turned to him, her eyes meeting his directly.
"Yuto," she said softly, yet firmly. "You're masking all your insecurities behind that cool facade of yours."
Yuto blinked, caught off guard. "What?"
"You didn't want to worry your teammates," Haku continued, her gaze unwavering. "So you bottled up all your feelings, all your doubts. You put on a brave face, pretending you're fine, when you're not. Am I wrong?"
Yuto's first instinct was to deny it, but her words struck a chord. He looked away, his jaw tightening. 'How does she see through me so easily?' he wondered.
"You're not wrong," he admitted quietly after a moment. "I guess… I thought if I showed any weakness, it would make things harder for Naruko and Hitomi. They're already dealing with so much. I wanted to be the steady one."
Haku's expression softened. "It's not a bad thing to want to protect your friends, Yuto. But you need to let yourself feel too. It's okay to be human. To be vulnerable."
Her words lingered in the air, and Yuto felt a sense of relief, as if a small part of the weight on his shoulders had lifted. He glanced at Haku, offering her a faint smile. "Thanks. I think I needed to hear that."
Haku returned his smile, her own burden feeling a little lighter as well. "We're not so different, you and I," she said gently. "We carry the same weight. Maybe… we can help each other bear it."
Yuto nodded, his resolve hardening. "Yeah. Maybe we can."
