Naruto: From Konoha to One Piece (and Beyond)

Chapter 377: Chapter 377: The Toll of Ambition

"It's not just that there's a problem, your broken machine has never worked!" Wolverine shouted angrily, kicking the device with force. "The test subject who escaped from your last experiment suffered a total genetic collapse on the table. He turned into a puddle of water!"

"That's right! It would've been the biggest terrorist attack of the century... killing the leaders of every nation at the international summit."

"I'm afraid it won't be long before humans and mutants enter into an all-out war!"

Magneto coughed violently, nearly spitting blood. His three subordinates exchanged looks. Aside from Mystique, the other two appeared visibly pale.

The rest of the X-Men remained silent, none of them contradicting Wolverine. At this point, the members of the Brotherhood began to suspect the truth. If someone had said this before the battle, they might have thought it was a psychological ploy meant to shake their morale. But now, with everything concluded, saying it served no purpose.

Given the circumstances, even the Brotherhood members started to believe it.

"There's a helicopter approaching," Shin said, glancing at everyone. "Let's fall back for now. We'll talk more later."

As he spoke, Shin used the Float-Float Fruit's ability to raise a basketball-court-sized platform into the air. Then he restored the section of land and the Statue of Liberty to their original positions before lifting everyone into the sky.

By the time the helicopter arrived from a distance, there was nothing left but a large crater and a slightly displaced Statue of Liberty.

...

Following the incident, Shin postponed his trip to Kamar-Taj and left with the mutants.

Rogue's vitality deficiency was actually quite easy to fix. After all, vitality could be replenished, she just needed to drain some from animals.

In the movie, she recovered by absorbing Wolverine's vitality. But this time, her loss was far more severe. If she were to drain Wolverine now, she could potentially leave him a lifeless husk.

After all, it wasn't just about absorption, there was also the matter of transformation. Wolverine's healing factor and extended longevity wouldn't remain with her permanently. And the level of vitality she was missing couldn't be replenished with short-term healing.

However, absorbing vitality from animals posed no such issues. Shin led the group out from Liberty Island and over the sea. With Observation Haki and the Float-Float Fruit, he captured a massive haul of fish, so many that he even managed to snag a whale, for Rogue to drain.

Shin also discovered something intriguing.... if Rogue completely drained a creature of its vitality without restraint, the energy she gained became stronger and more permanent.

It seemed that the very last spark that kept a creature alive represented its true life force. The initial stages of absorption only took stamina and surface-level energy, which could be restored. But when Rogue pushed further, consuming that final and irrecoverable essence, she could permanently fuse that power into herself.

Watching this, Shin finally understood how terrifying top-tier mutants could be. If this girl ever decided to embrace evil, she would easily become the most terrifying mutant alive.

If she abandoned her morals and went on a killing spree, even if the abilities she copied were halved, she could still grow into an Omega-level monster.

After draining countless animals, Rogue, aside from her white hair, had fully regained her youth. Her cheeks were rosy, her blood flow vibrant, and her body practically brimming with vitality. In terms of endurance, strength, and speed, she was now comparable to a super soldier like Captain America.

The price? Tens of thousands of tons of marine life had been consumed in a single day. Fortunately, with Shin's Observation Haki and Float-Float Fruit powers, it was actually possible. Without them, catching that many fish would've been a pipe dream.

While Rogue recovered quickly, Magneto fell into complete decline.

Not only had his plan failed, it had backfired disastrously. His life force had diminished drastically, and he no longer had long to live. At this point, Magneto looked like a man well into his final years.

After circling the area with the others, Shin eventually agreed to return to Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters. By then, Magneto required physical support just to walk and had lost most of his ability to control metal.

This wasn't just from his physical condition. In theory, a mutant's power stemmed from their X-gene, and their physical health had minimal impact on their abilities.

Of course, in practice, the reality was more complicated. For instance, Professor X's psychic powers weakened when he developed Alzheimer's, and Wolverine's healing factor declined as he aged.

Still, Magneto's loss of power wasn't just due to age. The real issue was spiritual, his will was shattered, and his mind was on the verge of collapse.

Most of the world leaders at the summit had died, and those who survived had gone nearly mad. Emergency orders had been issued to exterminate mutants entirely.

What truly terrified people wasn't death itself, but the agonizing wait for it. Knowing death was inevitable, drove many over the edge. And with mutants as the perfect scapegoat, all that fear had a target.

Compared to other places, Xavier's School was still a safe haven. Elsewhere, mutants were being slaughtered en masse. The weight of that news had aged Magneto visibly in just a short time.

At the academy gates, a wheelchair turned and rolled forward on its own. A bald middle-aged man with a kind expression appeared.

"You old fool. That was reckless." The man was none other than Professor Charles Xavier. He looked at the hollow shell that Magneto had become and sighed heavily.

Still, he only sighed. No matter what, the two had been lifelong friends. Seeing his old comrade like this, Xavier couldn't bring himself to scold him more harshly.

Shin followed the X-Men into the academy, scanning the area. Everyone inside was in a state of panic. If not for Charles, the living, breathing psychic nuclear bomb, the whole academy might have already been razed to the ground.

In comparison, Magneto's magnetic powers had to be developed to an extremely refined degree before they could seriously threaten humanity, like reversing the planet's poles. Xavier, on the other hand, could potentially exterminate humanity with sheer thought.

Even without Cerebro, Professor X's psychic ability was overwhelming. If he ever wanted to destroy humanity, he certainly had the means.
