Chapter 88: Chapter 88: A Parting Gift
Danzo was dead completely and utterly.
But no one witnessed it.
Tsunade and the others had already blasted open the door to the hidden laboratory and rushed inside.
"They won't be coming out any time soon."
Even without going in, Neji already knew what they'd find. When they saw it for themselves, they'd probably wish they could hack Danzo's corpse to pieces.
Too bad they'd never get the chance.
Whoosh!
Neji unleashed a Piercing Mountain Strike. A flash of white light swallowed his wooden clone whole.
After being hit by Kotoamatsukami, who knew what kind of latent effect the clone might've undergone? Not that Neji cared. He preferred to eliminate all unknowns better to destroy it and be done with it.
"Release."
Approaching the Earth-Style Wall, Neji quickly formed a simple seal. The four massive stone walls rumbled and sank back into the ground.
And there it was still intact.
Neji's gaze landed on the severed, bandage-wrapped arm. He stared at it in silence, though a shadow darkened his expression.
All-Killing Ash Bones could completely obliterate a target. But now it was clear if a body part had already been detached before the technique struck, it was immune.
He'd suspected as much, but seeing it confirmed left him frowning slightly.
If someone like Orochimaru detached his core from his body before the technique landed, he might very well escape death. All he'd need to do is activate his snake-body substitution technique in time.
Still, Neji soon relaxed.
As long as the Ash Bones struck Orochimaru's actual body, even if he used the substitution technique, as long as his consciousness hadn't yet slithered out of his mouth, he'd still die.
It would all come down to speed. Whoever moved first would survive. The slower one… would be whittled down to nothing.
"I didn't expect there to be another jutsu, besides Kamui, that could potentially bypass Ash Bones. Looks like I can't afford to use it recklessly anymore Orochimaru might figure out its weakness."
Neji stepped forward, picked up Danzo's severed arm, and placed it in a prominent spot before turning to leave.
That arm contained the powers of both Hashirama Senju and the Uchiha clan. Imperfect, yes but undeniably strong.
Yet Neji had no interest in it.
Someday, he would surpass even Hagoromo Ōtsutsuki.
No he would surpass Kaguya.
Though he was still weak now, Orochimaru would buy him the time he needed.
Night had fallen over Konoha. Though the earlier tremors had shaken the village, everything now lay still and quiet. It seemed Tsunade had ordered the ANBU to put the civilians back to sleep.
Neji stood atop a rooftop, gazing silently at the village below.
"So she had the ANBU handle the civilians. That saves me the trouble."
It was time for him to leave the village.
"Staying in Konoha won't get me much stronger anymore. If I want to grow, leaving is my only path forward."
Though Neji wasn't originally from this world, in his past life, Naruto had always centered around Konoha. He had slipped into that role so naturally.
And now, as he prepared to leave, he felt… reluctant.
"I should check on those girls before I go."
With a flicker of motion, Neji vanished from the rooftop.
At the Hyuga compound, dozens of clan members stood gathered in the courtyard, waiting solemnly for their clan leader. Until the village was confirmed safe, they refused to rest.
Neji didn't want to alert them. Slipping in quietly was easy. Compared to him, the others' Byakugan couldn't come close and he had the added benefit of the Mind's Eye of Kagura. Evading detection was child's play.
He pushed open the door and crept inside.
Though the room was dark, that meant nothing to someone with the Byakugan.
"Hmm? Hinata's not here?"
Yes this was Hinata's room. As for why he was sneaking in like this…
Well, best not to think too hard about it. Some questions had no good answer.
"It's so late. Where could she be?"
Suddenly, a thought struck him.
He turned on his heel and headed for Hanabi's room.
Using the same method, he arrived without incident and just as expected, he found Hinata. And not just her.
Hanabi was there too. So was Karin.
The three girls were huddled together against the wall, leaning on one another in sleep. They must've been playing together and dozed off from exhaustion.
"So they're getting along well. That's a relief."
Neji felt quietly satisfied.
He wouldn't return for at least three years not because the plot demanded it, but because of his own plan. He needed that time for real training and combat experience.
If not for Pain's future attack on Konoha, he might've stayed away even longer.
Seeing the three of them so close gave him peace of mind.
Walking to the window, Neji picked up a folded blanket and murmured, "I won't be seeing you for a long time. Let's see what reward this brings."
He gently draped the blanket over the three sleeping girls.
"Host has covered Hyuga Hinata with a blanket. Reward: Byakugan: Illusion Arts."
Byakugan: Illusion Arts – A powerful ocular jutsu that harnesses the Byakugan's chakra to project one's consciousness into the target's mind. With it, the user can freely manipulate neural impulses and plunge opponents into deeply realistic illusions.
Neji nodded in approval.
A good reward.
The Byakugan's potential had long been overlooked. It wasn't until the late stages of the original series that its true power began to surface.
Kaguya had used this technique not only to crush ordinary soldiers but also to mentally dominate Ōtsutsuki Hamura someone who also possessed the Byakugan and pit him against his own brother, Hagoromo.
Now that was terrifying.
Even more unsettling was the fact that Hamura's strength, while never clearly defined, had certainly reached the Six Paths level.
Think about it Team 7 at their most overpowered, plus Obito's sacrifice, barely managed to seal Kaguya away.
Yet a thousand years ago, Hagoromo and Hamura had accomplished the same feat by themselves.
That meant Hamura was nothing to scoff at.
To be able to control someone like that with illusion now that was chilling.
Before Neji could reflect any further, the system chimed again.
"Host has covered Hyuga Hanabi with a blanket. Reward: Byakugan: Phasing Form."
Byakugan: Phasing Form – A space-bending ocular ability. The user can traverse spatial dimensions freely, phase their body into alternate spaces, and shift themselves or other objects between the real world and Kaguya's pocket dimensions. In effect, it allows for complete spatial intangibility and instant relocation.
"Another ability derived from the Byakugan, huh?" Neji remarked, surprised.
It wasn't the Tenseigan, but it was still incredibly powerful.
Similar to Kamui, this ability mirrored Kinshiki Ōtsutsuki's technique. A straightforward yet invaluable power.
Such space manipulation had a direct impact on combat strength. Both Obito and Kakashi had become Kage-level threats with just a single Sharingan that offered this ability.
Obito, in particular, had used it to move unhindered even among the Five Kage, eventually becoming one of the final bosses.
"So then, what's the next reward?"
