Chapter 34: Can't Afford To Offend The Uchiha, But They Can Afford To Offend You
"Yes, I was actually a bit worried before. After all, your mission target this time was none other than Orochimaru, one of the legendary Sannin." Fugaku Uchiha said with a smile.
At this moment, Kuragami Uchiha took out a mission scroll he had obtained from Taro and placed it on the table.
"Kuragami, what is this?"
Fugaku asked curiously, but Kuragami simply gestured for him to open it and see for himself.
Fugaku picked up one of the scrolls and injected a bit of Chakra into it, and after just one glance, his expression changed; then he looked up at Kuragami and asked: "All of this...?"
"It's a total of 1.5 billion Ryo."
Kuragami replied. "If I hadn't been in a hurry and had brought more sealing scrolls, I could have carried even more."
"You're something else, Kuragami."
Fugaku was pleasantly surprised. Even after covering the necessary expenses for tools and other essentials, the Uchiha Clan's businesses would take several years to accumulate such an amount. Yet, Kuragami managed to bring back this much in just one trip, and from the way he talked, this was only part of it.
"Tomorrow, send two Jonin from the clan to Tanzaku Town. This is the payment for a long-term guard mission." Kuragami instructed.
"Understood." Fugaku nodded.
"How was the Konoha Military Police Force while I was away?" Kuragami asked.
"Overall, it went well. Thanks to the work manuals you left before leaving, the new ninja adapted quickly and can now patrol and handle duties normally."
Fugaku replied. "But..."
"Did something happen?"
Kuragami noticed Fugaku's hesitation and asked directly.
"In the past few days, complaints about patrol officers and security personnel have multiplied several times compared to before. And all of them are targeting the new civilian ninja while there hasn't been a single complaint about our original clan members." Fugaku said.
"Oh?"
Kuragami chuckled. "Are the new recruits not enforcing the law with a smile?"
"How could that be?"
Fugaku sighed and rubbed his temples. "The Konoha Military Police Force currently has four main squads and twenty-eight smaller teams. Before each patrol, the leaders repeatedly emphasize the importance of smiling while enforcing the law. Just yesterday, we even held a full department meeting to stress this point. But despite all that, complaints keep increasing. Kuragami, will this affect your plan to integrate our clan into the village?"
"Don't worry, Elder Fugaku. I'll handle this matter tomorrow."
Kuragami said calmly. This situation was entirely within his expectations.
After all, he knew the nature of the villagers too well. When the Konoha Military Police Force was exclusively made up of Uchiha members, they might have restrained themselves a little due to the clan's reputation and power. But now that the civilian ninja had joined, things were different.
They can't afford to offend the Uchiha, but they think they can afford to offend you; this perfectly sums up the mindset of these troublesome villagers.
Kuragami was actually pleased with this outcome. First, with these civilian ninjas acting as the buffer, the Uchiha Clan's public image in the village would improve significantly. Second, this civilian ninja, who was simply enforcing the law fairly but still faced malicious complaints, would inevitably harbor resentment. And when the day came that they needed to crack down on these villagers, their batons would undoubtedly hit much harder.
"As long as you have a solution."
Fugaku said. "Aside from this, there's also a personal matter I wanted to discuss."
"Please go ahead, Elder Fugaku."
Kuragami said.
"I would like you to be Sasuke's teacher."
"Oh?"
Kuragami raised an eyebrow. "Why did you suddenly think of this?"
"Sasuke is now at the age where he can officially begin his ninjutsu training. Two days ago, I taught him the clan's standard introductory ninjutsu, the Great Fireball Jutsu."
Fugaku explained. "However, Sasuke's performance was far inferior to his older brother's."
"Is that so?"
Kuragami chuckled. He remembered when he had learned the same technique at the clan's private school. Among the 28 Uchiha children in his group, he was ranked 27th. For a time, he even doubted whether he was cut out to be a ninja.
"But since you are a precedent in the clan, I had Sasuke test his Chakra nature. His Chakra attributes are fire and lightning. Then I let him try a Lightning Style, and his talent in lightning far surpasses his talent in fire." Fugaku said with a wry smile.
Sasuke's talent for Lightning Style was on par with Itachi's for Fire Style. He only needed to read the Lightning Ball Jutsu scroll twice before successfully creating a one-meter-wide lightning sphere.
However, their entire clan specialized in Fire Style. While Mikoto also had a lightning attribute, her knowledge of Lightning Style Jutsu was limited. This made teaching Sasuke a major challenge.
Fortunately, within the clan, there was someone with a similar background, Kuragami Uchiha.
As the former Clan Head, Fugaku was well aware of Kuragami's history. Back when Kuragami was in the academy, his performance was decent, thanks to his natural Uchiha talent, but within the clan, he was completely unremarkable.
His results in the clan's private school, which mainly focused on Fire Style and Genjutsu, were abysmal. The clan had even considered giving up on training him until he pestered an elder in charge of the clan's jutsu archive and managed to obtain his first Lightning Style jutsu. Only then did his true talent begin to shine.
Given Sasuke's current situation, Fugaku naturally thought of having him learn from Kuragami.
"Besides."
Fugaku added: "You know I'm not good at raising children. Itachi has already strayed from the right path, so I want to entrust Sasuke to you."
"I understand. From now on, have Sasuke come to me after school." Kuragami said with a smile.
"Then I'll be counting on you, Kuragami-kun."
Fugaku said solemnly.
"Elder Fugaku, there's no need for such formality. If I can help a child in a situation similar to mine avoid unnecessary struggles, I'm more than happy to do so." Kuragami replied.
"No, Kuragami, this is a father's gratitude."
Fugaku said emotionally. "I trust you with Sasuke's future."
"I won't let you down."
Kuragami promised.
"Then I won't disturb you any longer."
Fugaku said as he took his leave. Kuragami stood up to see him off.
After Fugaku left, Kuragami finished maintaining his sword and went to rest.
The next day, when Kuragami arrived at his office in the Konoha Military Police Force, he saw that his subordinates had redecorated it while he was away on his mission. Satisfied, he nodded in approval.
